little excerpt for ya! One notable example from later history is the Primrose League, established in Britain in 1883. The League was founded to promote Conservative principles and rally support for the British monarchy and traditional institutions. By mobilizing a large base of supporters, including women and working-class individuals, the Primrose League played a crucial role in defending established hierarchies and resisting progressive reforms. While the League involved women significantly-one of the first political organizations to do so-it remained non-committal on giving women the vote, even during the Edwardian women's suffrage movement (1Library - documents sharing platform) (Oxford Academic). This highlights the complexity of its progressive claims, contrary to what some modern conservative figures, like Jacob Rees-Mogg, might suggest. (yes chatgpt helped! i've still got plenty of editing to do)

@@3rdeye1st52 Roger Scruton is ridiculous. I studied philosophical aesthetics so I know for a fact, that Scruton is a charlatan; he gets people to believe he is an expert on Aristotle's Transcendentals especially Catholics but he hasn't a clue, he just talks complete rubbish. It is an attempt to legitimise conservative realism and narrative art forms that actually came to an end due to the following of aesthetic principles; against the mere "taste" oriented validations presumed by the upper crust.

Spoty on Suella. I wrote to my local MP that I would no longer vote Conservative after they sacked her. I vote Reform now and I wish she would join them, I will vote them again in the next Election if I am still here.

Penny Mordaunt was right when she talked about fear... in fact she ignored the one fear that lost them the election.... immigration!!!!! It is not racist to be patriotic... it is not racist to want to defend out very own culture. Being patriotic is not being far right... just right.

The fear that your culture will be swallowed up by people who do not look like you is racist. Concerned there isn't enough housing or infrastructure for the current immigration levels isn't racist, but you're concerned that someone else existing somewhere else in the country will change your personal culture then you're clearly not very attached to it anyway, if so easily swayed.

@@bluedoughnut1334 No that is not racist at all you sausage. If you're a Pakistani immigrant for example, you already have a set patch of land in this finite world to embrace your own culture and land called Pakistan. You do not immigrate, probably illegally, all the way to the UK just to live like you are in Pakistan and convert British culture to your own. That is a net gain for Pakistani culture and a net loss for British culture, and we have every right to protect our culture in our own land just like they do in Pakistan and the rest of the world. Nobody worries for their own culture being swayed personally - we care for our children, our women and the great culture that our ancestors fought for and that which is envied worldwide. You are silly.

Everyone in a country is patriotic, even the immigrants that come to live there, its just the far right have the strange idea that their own extreme form of patriotism is the only form possible. If you don't see that everyone is patriotic, then your most likely far right and a bigoted racist, even though you will bitterly deny that.

This 2018 quote from David Frum, about American conservatives, I think is applicable to UK conservatives: "Maybe you do not much care about the future of the Republican Party. You should. Conservatives will always be with us. If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy."
@storm21410

Reform are MAGA, the Tories are mostly still One Nation Conservatives (so perhaps like Romney?) with a desperate wing of Reform wannabes. Problem is Conservatives have adopted bits of Blairism - and they're not wrong that they aren't wholly 'right wing' given the highest tax burden, but the country doesn't want ultra-libertarian economics. Even Reform UK are a mix of Truss-style tax cuts with nationalisation of some utilities (which is bonkers). And culturally, the coalition government introduced same-sex marriage, which cultural conservatives like David Starkey are against, but no one wants to reverse it. I don't know how long it'll take the Conservatives to turn to the centre, but all it would take is a Farage defection to the Tories coupled with a many promises on party direction and they are back for 2029.

The real issue with civil servants is the ministers had idealistic notions they wanted implemented but as they were also incompetent had have little idea how their ideals could be implemented but were then frustrated when the same civil servants could not come up with magical solutions to their impossible ideas. Its the job of the civil servant to enact completed solutions, not to create solutions of magical thinking.
