But if you look to the description of the flower - the Mandevilla - it may be also seen as a symbol of the abusive father/husband. Through guidance and counselling, he may change for the better. He may be the gentle and loving man who was portrayed as the neighbour... (I LOVE THIS SHORT FILM!)

Excellent short film. My thoughts about this are that I think that the little boy is actually the man as a child,the ice cream scene & after that holding hands together are clearly pointing to this direction. Just listen to the words what the two characters are saying to each others while eating their ice creams. Great work all around and Arden's beautiful,soulful presence is bringing lot more views to this,thanks!

I think that is a really good interpretation. :) My take was a little different. I thought that the film is meant to hit a nerve with men and people who abuse their loved ones --maybe get to them ask themselves, 'If you were an outsider, how would you feel about someone treating their family this way? Take a look at yourself and see what you're doing to the ones you love.' To me, the Mandevilla plant is meant to be a symbol of caring for the ones you love. A really thought provoking film.

It's different for everybody. Growing up with an abusive parent doesn't decide how you're going to end up like. It certainly has influence, but in the end, the ultimate decision is up to them.

My take:The neighbour was the father's sub conscious. At the beginning, the neighbour witnessed the couple's quarrels, which mirrored what he had to listen to when he was a child growing in a family suffering domestic violence. The neighbour decided that he wants to be a caring lover/husband to his wife (flower shop scene) and doting father (ice cream scene). But it didn't play out that way. He realised he had in fact turned into the monster he didn't want to be. By then it was too late for him.

Agreed, it happens with victims as well. They disassociate so the pain isn't so close. It's sad for both (but more so for her) because he said he truly loves his son and realizes how badly he hurt his family...he can't take it back, can't really apologize and nothing can go back to normal. So the "good guy" turns out to be the "bad guy" but realizes how bad being the bad guy is :/

For some people who don't understand the ending, it's the same guy. He's the dad/husband of her and realizes at the end that he's been abusing his family and needs help. He drinks and smokes so much cause of stress and blames it mostly on his wife. He later accepts to go to jail so he"ll probably get rehab for anger issues and will let his family happy knowing he won't hurt them no more. Notice also why she doesn't talk to him much when he talks to her because she hates him from beating her. The guilty conscience was what he was going through.
@AlejandroDiaz-xw2yi

I wouldn't say she hates him. I don't think the son does either. Most domestic violence victims do love their spouse, but they fear them.

So true!! But 1.They portrayed him as the main character. I assumed he was the good-guy and the other bad straight away. We didn't see the abuser's face (I thought it was to de-personalize him) 2. When he stretched his hand to pat the kid on the head, there was hesitation 3. He was smoking and drinking (which isn't a crime) but he looked really lonely- depressed about himself and his situation, odd for "good guy" 4. He seemed used to hearing the abuse and didn't react, thus appearing guilty.

From my opinion I think it's trying to show that if abusers could are what they where doing from another persons eyes maybe they would stop themselves. I really enjoyed this short story. Very very well directed and written. Maybe now those who hit their partners will stop and think before lashing out. Men AND woman abuse. It's about time it stopped.
