🦢🐤 I put this compilation together of all the times Sam recognized, and ran over to talk to me from her first season at the pond as a gosling. They should all be in order of occurrence.

@Susie_Floozie
@Susie_Floozie 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicholasszymonik5269 I noticed shifting language patterns with my big Buff Orpington hen when she went broody. She holed up in the coop for days and made high, skirling screeches like a kraken. When I got her chicks, she switched over to what I thought of as her instructional voice as she tended her peeps. She no longer spoke in her usual cadence, a pleasant mutter that I loved. I missed that. After several weeks when the peeps were becoming young punk teenagers, I was surprised to hear Goldie's pleasant mutter return. Then, after seeing her vary her speech patterns to instruct her chicks, I had to wonder...was that her default chicken language--or simply the lingo she used to communicate with me, her ape servant? These birds have surprising depth.

@@NEZLeader I got to hear my Buff Orpington hen teach her hatchlings about hawks! I'm not exaggerating. I put Goldie and her 2-week-old peeps into a curtained nesting tower for the night and turned the lights down. I could hear her still addressing the chicks in what I called her "instructional voice." Give 'em a break, I thought. Then she paused...and I heard her thrumming "hawk alert" sound. The chicks went NUTS! They squawked and flapped around in terror--I could see the black velvet curtain thrash around. She let them freak for a moment, the the instructional voice started again...then another hawk alert, with the same excited reaction! Man! I was sitting there gawping like a gobsmacked bass. Not only could I tell exactly what she was teaching them--she was doing it as *an abstract idea*. There was no hawk flying overhead, no sky...nothing but the darkness and her sounds. That made me look more closely at the way she used speech for purposeful goals. I notice social constructs in their order, too. Goldie will appoint a lesser hen to act as her herald. I learned that Jeri, a Golden Comet, would appear at times to get my attention. She'd turn and lead me to somewhere Goldie seemed to be waiting, often at a blocked pathway. I'd move the obstruction, and Goldie would cruise out followed by Jeri, who'd turn and cluck at me as she went through. When Jeri died, her sister Josie took her place as Goldie's herald. When Josie died, I noticed the mantle of herald passed on to Goldie's smallest adopted Deathlayer chick, Squatch. I'm still new to chickens--I thought they were simpleminded creatures without complexities. But four years ago, I wound up taking in a neighbor's abandoned hen, and since then Goldie and her friends have been an endlessly amazing ongoing experiment. I love these birds!

This sweet and charming video really helped boost my spirits today now that I'm into my 70th year of life as an American, bewildered by just how deeply beleaguered my nation's democracy is by sedition and bipartisan deeply entrenched financial corruption. Back when I was 9-years-old, my Mom & Dad bought my one and only 4-years-younger sister a duckling for Easter in the Springtime. By the end of that summer, "Daffy" kept figuring out ways to escape his backyard shed and its surrounding 100 square foot caged in compound. My Dad's "solution" was to convince my then 6-year-old sister that Daffy wanted to be with other ducks. Therefore, we three took Daffy to the large farm called Shangri-La about a 20 minute drive from our home. My parents had been buying fresh chicken eggs and dairy products there for years, even before I was born. The family that owned it said not only it would be a-okay to drop Daffy off at their large pond where about 20 ducks roamed free, but that they would check in on Daffy to let us know how he was faring when we stopped by to buy their farm fresh goods, none of which were at all duck derived. Well, on the day of Daffy's "release," my Dad, my sister and I walked alongside Daffy down the long hill to the pond to let him swim amongst the other ducks, most of which were white feathered just like him. After about 15 minutes of watching Daffy enjoying his new friends and at his "new home," my Dad said we all should start walking back up the hill to our car, with Dad saying to my then only slightly tearful sister, "Don't look back, because he's happy and it'll only make it harder to leave him here." But then, only halfway up that hill, we heard loud frantic squawking, turned around, and saw Daffy running as if his life depended on it up the hill after us! My sister broke out in full blown sobs and ran towards Daffy whereupon he leaped into her arms! Shortly after the first frost of Autumn, and just a week before Halloween, I came home from school to find my sister in tears because she had just found out that Dad had taken Daffy to a farm far away from which he could never return, but most assuredly would be happy forevermore. It wasn't until my sister was in her last years of high school that we all learned that Daffy had soon become a countryside family's Thanksgiving main entrée. That family was poor, my Dad's customers, and our neighbors had been constantly complaining about Daffy's nearly incessant squawking to get my sister's attention whether she was indoors at home, away at school, or sleeping. Accordingly, R.I.P. Daffy - you gave up your well fed life to feed a needy family for a Thanksgiving celebration, dear feathered friend. Must say, though, that I'm very, very glad that this goose in the video remains alive, well, and amongst family and friends of the goose persuasion!

@Wolfdogmom The city owns the geese, they are in a public park in our downtown. The geese can generally fend for themselves and are almost universally feared :)

This was absolutely adorable. Seeing Sam waddling to say “hi” to the cameraman, to Sam and an army of her family all waddling to say “hi” to the cameraman, put a big smile on my face. Thank you for being so wonderful to those beautiful creatures, and thank you for sharing this with the world.

This goose is so friend shaped the unadulterated friendliness they have when running up and greeting you warms the heart so muchh. And I love how the trill stays consistent as if it were a greeting made just for you even when their voice becomes more of a honk than peeps
