Best String Trimmer Review: • Best String Trimmer EV...
So we all love DeWalt shop tools, but the big question is how good is their outdoor tool line?
In this video I review and test the new 2021 Dewalt 20v 14" folding brushless battery powered string trimmer (model DCST922P1). This trimmer includes a fast charger and is powered by a 20v Max XR 5Ah battery. It has a cutting swath of 14" and uses .08" cutting line.
Watch this video to see if this tool deserves to be in your garage.....

Just bought mine in Aug. 2024; hope they fixed whatever causes it to die. I had the same problem with the trimmer being too back-heavy. Was really muscling it. I just installed the handle right below where it folds, and it is perfectly balanced. Agree the battery charge-status LEDs should be visible without removing the battery; kinda silly oversight. But this is my first string trimmer, and I am happy with it so far.

I'll add to, and pretty much agree with everything you said. I already had a few DeWalt batteries, so I bought this on sale for $159 Canadian tool-only to replace my gas trimmer. I have over 300ft of trimming to do, plus around 2 trees and swings, and I rarely use more than 1 bar on my 5ah battery during a normal weekly mow. For my 0.2 acre lawn, any of the better options would be overkill. I would recommend this trimmer to anyone with a small lawn who already has DeWalt batteries.

For someone who doesn't own this battery platform, I think your review is spot on for reasons why someone shouldn't buy into the platform if this string trimmer is one of their end goals. Contractors that might need to cut a little bit of grass around where they want to set up their miter saw stand or table saw or work table, will find this string trimmer a godsend. It's hard to compare a 60 volt ego against a 20 volt anything, but you do make a good point for anyone who is looking for a dedicated string trimmer platform. That being said, I don't know that I have seen a 20 volt string trimmer yet that isn't unbalanced. It's all because the motor is at the front at the string trimmer head instead of the back where the battery is and it is going to weigh more. You are acting like the metal at the head of the string trimmer added all the weight, but that string trimmer head weighs barely anything. It's the motor inside that has all the weight with the copper windings. That aluminum head hardly weighs anything. Your review definitely brings some valid concerns to mind, but seeing it in action definitely helped me see that this string trimmer may actually be what I'm looking for.

LOL. Every complaint you mentioned was EXACATLY my issue with this folding unit. Unbalanced. Runtime of the battery on high is ~20 minutes. Good job! The model before this had a MUCH larger battery (one hour runtime on high), the remaining battery capacity faced you, it was balanced. There are many, many negative reviews of this on Home Depot's website pointing out exactly our gripes. A plethora of complaints regrading the string not advancing when bumped. This folding unit feels like it came from the toy section of a Dollar Store....cheap, flimsy. Mine is going back to Home Depot.

Great video! I haven't met too many balanced string trimmers. A 6ah or 10ah would probably offset the balance issue. I've never needed indicator lights to know my power tool is running on low charge. Weed whacking is based on light resistance. There isn't a true need for a charge indicator. Lack of performance and awareness of runtime should offset that.

My biggest question with trimmers is: How do you edge with them?? My old B&D lets me push a button and flip the end, so I'm still holding the handle and trigger the same way, and I can cut a dead-straight line along the sidewalk at a fast walking pace. I'm really confused and sad to start shopping for a new trimmer and see this feature isn't on hardly any of them! Am I missing something? I see a shot at 4:40 where you are edging, but I can't see how you're holding it. I tried to hold this trimmer inverted in a store and it felt very awkward.

I have this trimmer also. Bought it cuz I have several large capacity DeWalt batteries. It’s true that it’s unbalanced. I’ll move the handle down to get a better balance point. I don’t really like the hinge for two reasons: when I would fold it in half to store it in my shed, by hanging it from the handle, it sticks out from the wall a little too far for my liking, also when folded I fear breaking the plastic shroud when it contacts the battery housing. And a third, after a year of ownership, I can feel “play”, looseness in the hinge while trimming. “No bueno”!

I can get more done with the dewalt, its alot compact, It dont weight much unless the person is weak cause i feel it lighter . the string dont run out fast cause the shorter the longer it takes to rip . I go through ego string fast . if the 20 is stronger than the ego trimmer i can imagines dewalt's 60v .

Mine was 169 with a 5ah battery included which i purchased 4 months ago . I love ego but their batteries are too big for such low ah like the 5 is big for a trimmer. Especially if you are doing 4 houses a day on a slow day. My dewalt battries are alot more compact so i divided my Ego and Dewalt tools ego doing mainly the bigger stuff . The z6 is amazing on the ego though but now im going off the subject. Everyone else must have just gotten a bad batch, Even medicine is the same, on Trials you will always have a side effect and even after a 5 year study the side effects will always be there but atleast now you know what you get when you take it . You also mention weight , i curl 170 lbs in sets of 30 so maybe for me thats why it dont feel tiring on the dewalt . One thing i do have an argument about dewalt wise, Thats the fact that you cannot put a Darwins grip.

40 % shorter but also 40 % wider. So now what would be normally stored straight up and down like a broom , is now taking up width in your space. Don't fall for the hype. Another thing to note is the motor is on the head where all the debris and dust is swirling around like a tornado. What's the big deal you ask ? Take a close look at the motor head. Do you see the vent holes machined into metal casting? Those are for air cooling the motor windings. Use yours for 10 minutes and notice the holes are clogged with debris. Now how the hell is air going to pass through that mess. And like you said.... the battery charge meter cannot be checked without pulling out the battery! Dewalt engineers need to get their heads out of their asses and go back to school !!! Pretty obvious there was not much R&D and real world testing. Take a look at your Dewalt screw gun. Same fucking shit ! The vents for cooling are at the back of the tool where you would intuitively place the palm of you free hand for more push into whatever work your doing , blocking air flow. Some of you probably noticed at one time or another, just how crazy hot that area gets after a long period of use. Smarten up Dewalt !!!

I own dewalt stuff, too, just not the trimmer in thisvideo, which I was considering on getting since ACE has $30 off plus I have an additional $20 off, making it h$109.99+ tax. The imbalance isdue does seem like a deal breaker, to me. I do like the fold option. Maybe they've changed something in the past year but mine is perfectly balanced with the battery in. Still heavy, but definitely rests with the head level. I'm using a 10ah battery that came with my mower though. Even with that there is a lot of room left in the battery compartment. I feel like these were designed with the flex volt batteries in mind even though they have a different model for the 60v batteries.

It's because he installed the handle on the top section instead of the bottom section and then didn't take time to adjust it. Mine is on the lower section and it balances fine. Also, the trimmer guard has a latch built in to latch the head in place when folded, it was intentional.

Had this trimmer for a couple of years now. Here are my observations: Upgrade the line to the echo or milwakee 0.08 line, these seem to be tougher. I haven't yet experimented with a thicker line. The head is fine, although you can't really let it "float" on the ground like some other speed feed heads (echo, husqvarna). I'll be upgrading my trimmer head once this one bites the dust. Also for those who have some difficulty with the balance, you can move the handle to the lower section of the trimmer shaft where it's more neutral.
