Had a Husqvarna gas trimmer, got tired to mix oil and gas, tired of getting to start it at the new season, so I sold it. Bought this Dewalt trimmer, and for my use which is just normal grass edge trimming, it is outstanding. Easy to use, store and operate. If you are someone who think that you can abuse it like that old hammer you picked up at the dump, then this is not for you. I always say, if you look after your tools then they will look after you.
@FTHRTime1 Жыл бұрын
Had this trimmer for a couple of years now. Here are my observations: Upgrade the line to the echo or milwakee 0.08 line, these seem to be tougher. I haven't yet experimented with a thicker line. The head is fine, although you can't really let it "float" on the ground like some other speed feed heads (echo, husqvarna). I'll be upgrading my trimmer head once this one bites the dust. Also for those who have some difficulty with the balance, you can move the handle to the lower section of the trimmer shaft where it's more neutral.

I found myself in the camp of needing a trimmer and owning Dewalt batteries already, after 5 minutes of fighting the terrible balance on this thing I rubbed both of my brain cells together and moved the handle below the joint and angled towards me. I use two of these for my lawn and tree business. I use 6AH batteries (the added weight helps with balance) and I have installed the handles below the knee turned around backwards so the grip is over the knee and it balances almost perfectly. I believe they still weigh less than echo gas weed eaters.
@julianpenton16752 жыл бұрын
Maybe they've changed something in the past year but mine is perfectly balanced with the battery in. Still heavy, but definitely rests with the head level. I'm using a 10ah battery that came with my mower though. Even with that there is a lot of room left in the battery compartment. I feel like these were designed with the flex volt batteries in mind even though they have a different model for the 60v batteries.
@RJMachine62 Жыл бұрын
It's because he installed the handle on the top section instead of the bottom section and then didn't take time to adjust it. Mine is on the lower section and it balances fine. Also, the trimmer guard has a latch built in to latch the head in place when folded, it was intentional.
@jordanpanasuk75133 жыл бұрын
I'll add to, and pretty much agree with everything you said. I already had a few DeWalt batteries, so I bought this on sale for $159 Canadian tool-only to replace my gas trimmer. I have over 300ft of trimming to do, plus around 2 trees and swings, and I rarely use more than 1 bar on my 5ah battery during a normal weekly mow. @@Kitearmy I'm not quite clear, why do you see visual access to Power meter as issue at all? While using tool you are doing exactly that - using tool to have a job done. When battery is dead you simply replace the battery and you move on. How many bars is left or used ... that's irrelevant. But if you are so interested in battery status you simply take battery out, check the level, plug it back and keep doing your job. I'm sure no one expects DeWalt to change complete engineering of their battery operated power tools just bcs of this particular trimmer. I have several DeWalt power tools and was never interested in battery status while working with my drill, impact drill, 50-90mm nail gun, Brad nail gun ... and a couple of other DeWalt tools. It's simply pointless remark.

For someone who doesn't own this battery platform, I think your review is spot on for reasons why someone shouldn't buy into the platform if this string trimmer is one of their end goals. Contractors that might need to cut a little bit of grass around where they want to set up their miter saw stand or table saw or work table, will find this string trimmer a godsend. It's hard to compare a 60 volt ego against a 20 volt anything, but you do make a good point for anyone who is looking for a dedicated string trimmer platform. That being said, I don't know that I have seen a 20 volt string trimmer yet that isn't unbalanced. It's all because the motor is at the front at the string trimmer head instead of the back where the battery is and it is going to weigh more. You are acting like the metal at the head of the string trimmer added all the weight, but that string trimmer head weighs barely anything. It's the motor inside that has all the weight with the copper windings. That aluminum head hardly weighs anything. Your review definitely brings some valid concerns to mind, but seeing it in action definitely helped me see that this string trimmer may actually be what I'm looking for.

You can place the handle below the hinge. This fixed the balance problem for me, but it means I have to be a little more hunched over to trim - fine for detail work as I usually like to get close anyway, but not ergonomic for long durations. Additionally, when you fold the trimmer, it snaps into the string guard - it appears it was designed to do so even if it does feel a little forced. With the handle on the lower end and the battery compartment snapped it, it transports very nicely when carried by the handle.

I don’t really like the hinge for two reasons: when I would fold it in half to store it in my shed, by hanging it from the handle, it sticks out from the wall a little too far for my liking, also when folded I fear breaking the plastic shroud when it contacts the battery housing. Of course you could just take an Allen wrench and relocate the handle forward of the hinge clasp. The small standard battery only lasts for about 10 - 15 minutes so you're better off with a bigger battery too. Balance problem solved. Duh!
@jaym1244 Жыл бұрын
@@philipgrice1026 Yup, that's what I did. Perfectly balanced and the reach for the new handle position actually seems more comfortable.

It’s really good for acres of fence line and around ditches etc. I think that ego would not hold up the way my Dewalt has d/t the type of areas I am trying to trim. Regular houses in a neighborhood would probably not need something constructed like the Dewalt.

Take the handle off, install it on the lower shaft and reverse the handle. The fulcrum point is now closer to a balance point.

Mine lasted less than a year. White smoke coming out of the motor/gear box. Dewalt says not to use as an edger, not to use at a steeper angle than 30 degrees. I was edging when mine got smoked.

I don't mind the balance issue and the handle is where it should be. For some moving the handle on the otherside of latch works, problem solved. In my opinion it is a great trimmer but to each his own.

I’m at one year & the string won’t stay on , you talking about minor edging even went using the recommended size . I like the convenience of grabbing it & go , but things use to actually last for years at one in time . What happened ? I love it but it’s got to go .

Actually, they does have a bigger battery it’s the 15 ah 60/20v volt battery, and they have 120 V flex volt battery too. But that’s not compatible. In fact, the tool is big enough to fit the 15 ah battery.
@blackdogsales93392 жыл бұрын
It looks like you have the grip mounted in the wrong position. If you mount the handle below the hinge, the tool will fold completely together and will be better balanced.
@Kitearmy2 жыл бұрын
Others have suggested that - oddly in the instructions this is how they say to do it

But in your demo, the handle is not in the position the instructions call for??

Excellent review. It's puzzling that so many companies fail to consider weight and balance in their trimmers. EGO got both right, especially with their carbon fiber version. 💯💯💯

I've been pretty disappointed in mine. The guard is useless and it spins the wrong way. The stock spool is a dumb design and the handle needs to be 2 inches lower but there's a huge hinge there. Thinking about returning it. Wish I would've watched this video before I bought it lol.

I feel like the cons in the review are a little nick picky. But It was right to point out all of them. As far as the other weed eater being lighter and better balanced I wonder which one will last longer since Dewalt builds all their tools to hold to commercial use compare to the rest that cater to homeowners who use tools on a once in while sitsuation.

Try using your ego battery on a drill no bueno, because all they make is lawn equipment and their batteries are huge and expensive , this is perfect for the person who has dewalt batteries and a small property and he can use the batteries on his power tools that's bueno, I have their first string trimmer 5 years and it still going strong

This is the reason I have this trimmer. I agree with most of the criticisms here, but it was very cheap as a package deal, I have a bunch of batteries and chargers already, and my yard is very small - less than 10 minutes to do all my trimming.

Same problem. Made sure it was locked but string just shoots out. Thought maybe I'd upgrade to the 60 volt model but it does the same thing. Getting my money back. Maybe Stihl but battery and charger don't come with Stihl and costs as much as the weed trimmer itself.

I have a Milwaukee string trimmer. I hate it because when I edge along a chain link fence I cant slow the rpms down low enough to keep from breaking the string. The trigger is supposed to be variable speed and it is but the lowest speed (rpms) is still to fast. Can you tell me if there are any other trimmers that you can slow the rpms way down if you want to. As far as I can tell this is there weak point.
@Kitearmy3 жыл бұрын
The EGO I uses goes supper slow - I know some of the variable speeds are just steps
