This video taken with an in-box camera shows how six nestling Tree Swallows fledge, leaving the nest box they were raised in for lives to be spent as highly aerial birds.

Thanks for posting, I have a swallow nest on my stoep too, was wondering what's happening in there...second batch of young ones.

I read that tree swallows will use the box for several weeks after fleeing , I don’t know of any other songbirds that do that . Thanks for the video , I have been afraid to put a camera in in case of tragedy

This is Great! I just went through this. It’s nerve wracking. The last 2 each waited 2 days in the hole being fed before they left. The last little one had to Stay alone during a Bad 3 hour rain lightning storm. I was worried it might leave in the storm but it waited and the next day left. I was pretty sure there were 4. I used a telescope snake camera. I didn’t want to disturb them. I saw 3 with the flying with their parents today. I just hope the other one is OK. I can’t help worrying. I get attached. 😢

David-Thank you for posting this series on the Tree Swallow. I have a couple of nestboxes with Tree Swallows in them and I've always wondered how it unfolded from the inside of my boxes. Now I know, thanks to you. And if you want to know how to keep Sparrows away permanently so they will not take the boxes away from the Swallows, just let me know and I'll tell you. Good luck with your Swallows!

I just got two universal sparrow traps but I can’t bring myself to euthanize them . We just successfully had tree swallows fledge and I was a wreck sometimes concerned about those house sparrows, always monitoring the box
