These people don't have some kind Of shortage of paper, it's just that it's worth it in their economical situation to make, and SELL, paper this way. Sometimes other things will be included in paper just for the appeal or to look cute, I'm guessing that's what they're doing here. I used to buy handmade paper in sheets that size at an art store in Toronto. It had leaf skeletons in it. The additions make the paper more decorative, suitable for lampshades, gift wrap, that sort of thing. The plain white is best for drawing painting or writing on. Different purposes for different colour and finishes. I wonder if that paper came from this factory or somewhere else.

It’s one of the most environmentally safe ways to make paper. I make handmade paper for paintings this way to recycle fabrics and paper. There are more environmentally safe ways to implement this process without machinery but that requires a constant flow of clean water. There are paper mills in Switzerland that run on water powered processing equipment. I can’t comment on the local water resources for this particular location though.

We did something similar to this when I was at school. We had arts and craft period, where we would reuse our old exam sheets, loose sheets or newspapers, mix the pulp with banana fibre and made these handmade paper, which would eventually be used as a folder for report cards, greeting cards, etc. I still have them to this day.

@@cthulhouette it's similar to the process shown here. During our art and crafts period, we would go to this place where we would first grind old newspapers, old exam sheets or whatever can be reused with water, banana fibres and dyes. Then there was this huge rectangular sieve, connected to hangers which would be easy to lift or put down in the water tub. We would pour in the a mug or two of the pulp on the sieve placed in water. After evenly distributing, we would lift the sieve and place the pulp on cotton cloth. There would be many such layers of cloth and the pulp. Then squeeze excess water with another machine and hang them out to dry. It was fun to do. Hope this made it clear. It's from a school in Tamil Nadu, India.

I have used this type of paper. Really good for sketching and quick watercolor urban sketching.

Worked at a p as per mill almost 26 years. It's absolutely HEARTBREAKING the amount of waste and loggers greed that rolls into places like that. Huge trees that loggers know will not fit through a chipper throat so they hide it in the middle of the smaller logs on a load...they get paid by weight... that big tree may have nest holes in it that the loggers crush that part in to try and hide ir and that nest hole may have babies in there. It's not just birds that live in those holes, it's raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks etc. If you see things like that and say anything to them they just get pissed and cuss you out or other workers at the mill get mad at you and tell you, you need to mind your own business. It takes 17 to 18 good diameter hardwood and soft wood trees to make a pallet of copy paper. 40 cases of paper to a pallet. Companies tell you they completely replant all the trees, that's BS! They only plant fast growing water guzzling, lightning rod pine trees! Pine trees drink 3/4 MORE WATER than an Oak tree or other hardwoods. There are so many things out in this world paper can be made from, it's a damn shame 😢

I was just watching the Brandy Melville documentary on HBO yesterday and they talked about how bad clothing and fabric waste is, most of it is shipped to Africa and China to be thrown in landfills, and in one country massive amounts of clothing is washed out to sea, and it's absolutely horrific to see how bad it really is, thankfully with factories like this, they make a huge difference in the clothing waste. So interesting to watch!

It seems backward and sooo very ‘fat’ of our so called progressive countries. We actually have an alternative to decimating our forests, cutting down our trees … by simply recycling things we would wastefully throw away … and we’re NOT doing it? This is basic human ugliness, ignorance, stupidity, entitlement … all the words!! Sometimes I think we deserve everything we get. 🌹❤️

They are wonderful people, but it is sad that they do their work like this, in deplorable conditions, at the behest of large corporations from the EU and the USA....without protective equipment, who knows how many hours a day, for what pay, who knows where the water flows, but we in the EU let's save the world with a green deal.....

All ‘paper’ was once actually made from tiny little wisps of fabric not that long ago. That’s why, unlike mid-19th century books onwards that were made entirely of wood pulp, 18th century books and their predecessors don’t crumble away to nothing. The people of the past were not stupid!
