While the idea is innovating and I appreciate the hustle to reuse over waste, if large clothing brands, especially fast fashion brands, or any companies that work synthetic textiles are not forced to use recycled polyester there is no point. Like everyone else said in the comments, this is a band-aid solution addressing plastic waste. But we actually need to target the original source of the problem which is overusing plastic and being wasteful with it. ALSO I think most consumers still prefer wearing organic fabrics.

This statement is too broad to be of any use. There are hundreds of types of plastics, of which degradation mechanisms can hardly be compared. As for PET, the amount of chain incisions during melting and re-extrusion is actually quite low, if done carefully, decrease in molecular weight is under 5%. For plastics like PET, these broken chains can also be 'repaired' fairly easy and economically using a process called Solid State Polymerization. The amount of times one can recycle PET is not limited by the "destroyed polymer chains", but mainly limited by contamination and discoloration, which is nearly impossible to remove during regular mechanical recycling.

The people complaining in the comments are missing the point. Even if you don't like polyester because of microplastics, this company is still prolonging the life of single use plastic by reusing it and giving it a few more years before it ends up in a landfill somewhere. Yes it is not perfect but it still makes a big difference. The idea that we are all going to suddenly stop using single use plastic is delusional it is everywhere. That is going to take another 20-50 years minimum. In the meantime it should be recycled.
@sander7028
@sander7028 5 ай бұрын
I think you are also among the ones missing the point. When PET bottles are recycled (more like downcycled) into fibers, they almost 100% end up in garments with no end-of-life options. As soon as the fibers are dyed/mixed/woven, they cannot be meaningfully recycled again. If those same shredded bottles were used to make new bottles, you end up with a product that can be nearly perfectly be recycled again into yet another new bottle. Of course some degradation is inherent, thus after 8-11 cycles, the fun ends there as well, but 8-11 almost perfect recycling loops is a whole lot better than 1 recycle loop as is the case with bottle-to-fiber.

I think it's a better than nothing action to recycle plastic bottles (maybe, in theory), but it seems to me like the truth is that even this use of plastic, which involves recycling, has negative effects since microplastics will still be spread from it, which are bad for human health. :/ Overall, I believe it would be a healthier/ideal choice to purchase cotton and hemp -- truly natural stuff, because it's better for the body. :) I also think that recycling polyester may falsely portray the idea that it's not so negatively consequential to use plastic because we can just re-use it, when in reality that's not a healthy option -- it sort of enables/supports the continuation of using plastic in this. I can totally see that it is true -- this practice allows plastics to be re-used -- but I don't think I would prefer, personally, to use reused plastics since it still carries microplastics, which aren't good for the body. :)

You know what horrified me? Half these videos I see about people making 'sustainable' things from waste plastic are in developing countries. Corporations have realised that governments in developed countries have caught on to their grift, so they're exporting this idea to developing countries, where regulation isn't strong yet and people don't know about microplastics yet. It's insidious. Always it's some talented African or Indian entrepreneur talking happily about making something out of plastic and giving jobs to some local community, not knowing the sheer danger of microplastics. It's kinda of on them too, because they will completely trust anything a western corp tells them. It used to be China, but they caught on too. By the time India and Africa catch on, the corps will have returns the west to poverty and will simply go somewhere like cleveland, and some us entrepreneur 50 years from now will be making plastic. A cycle that never ends. It's a briliant plan. I almost envy them as much as I hate them

Currently, many companies recycle plastic fibers into fashion products like t-shirts, but this isn’t the best solution. This process involves using a lot of chemicals and leads to microplastic pollution from the very first wash, making the problem worse with each wash cycle. By converting these plastics into building materials and other solid products instead, we can prevent 99% of microplastic release. This approach not only reduces pollution but also provides more durable and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional materials.

They won't, because manufacturers buy polyester since it's cheaper. Most people are also not conscious buyers, and buy polyester clothing, or at least cotton mixed with polyester. This is the result of the entire consumerist cycle of excessive plastic use, companies using cheapest materials, complete lack of regulation, apathetic consumers and general ignorance. You can't create a world built on such foundations and except of company to just 'change'. If they make something else, they'll just go out of business. Some other competitor will simply will their place and Machine will continue to run.

@@Popshikel The damage is done by the washing machines too, or just regular washing. The little plastic filaments in the clothing break apart (during the washing process) and go into the water that is being used, which probably finds it’s way to the main water source. People or animals then drink that water and the microplastics go into their system. This polyester is made from recycled plastic so it is weaker than normal polyester, therefore breaking down more easily. A simple Google search will prove that recycling plastic weakens the plastic therefore accelerating the process for the plastic to become microplastic. Plastic is a horrible thing and is intoxicating our planet, yes there is no other solution, but this polyester fabric will help plastic spread into bodies of water.

You can't use recycled plastic in space technology. Most things that go into space require extremely hi tech parts which need to made from expensive allows and metals like gold, silicon and titanium. That's why they're so costly and expensive to make. Even clothes is not a good idea. People don't realise that plastic just isn't that good. It's low quality, toxic and hard to recycle. We'd be actually far better off using cotton, wood and leather

Yes, very true. And the sustainable way is very simple... Stop over-consuming. Don't buy more than you need, don't buy new trends every season, and don't throw out clothes that are only one year old... Buy fewer but quality items that can last for a long time. Cotton isn't the only option, there are also other natural materials such as hemp. Look for sustainable clothing brands and what materials they're using, they might have found a natural material they can produce in a sustainable way in that area. Linen, silk and more.

Polyester is significantly cheaper than natural fibers (ex. cotton, wool, etc.) that's why I hate it when companies market themselves as "sustainable" while in reality, they're just trying to cut some production costs; plus the quality of polyester is much more inferior than their natural fiber counterparts, they're less breathable, they smell, they don't last long, they end up in waterways and inevitably the ocean when you wash them in your washing machine, and the microplastics in polyester or in other synthetic fibers eventually end up inside your system. That's why I despise it when textile industries "greenwash" their production choices. Because at the end of the day... NOBODY WINS

Funnily, all their athleisure (LuLu Lemon) wear has a tonne of plastic in it and they wear it to vulgarly stick their bum photos on Instagram for the whole world to see. They have the gall to criticize a company that is lessening the amount of waste in landfill while dumping their trash in poorer countries.

Recycling plastics is crucial for reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing pollution. It’s a positive step towards sustainability. However, it’s worth reflecting on a time when we thrived without plastics. Before plastics, we used biodegradable and eco-friendly materials like wood, glass, metal, and natural fibers. These materials were durable, reusable, and had minimal environmental impact. I wish we could go back in time and follow our traditional methods and have a pollution free environment.

Not that I don't buy brand new clothes, but it's not on a regular basis. It's only when I have to, and maybe a couple of brand new pieces each year. Recently, I've been getting a lot of my clothes mended at a local dry cleaners.
