Water baptism was needed prior to Jesus but after Jesus he negated the use of water baptism, wherefore water baptism is now symbolic of being saved much like a wedding ring The wedding ring is symbolic of the marriage but it doesn’t make you married. One of the best ways to understand this Doctrine is to divide the scriptures properly. There are only around 5 scriptures that seem to say that water baptism saves you, and 40 scriptures that teach faith, belief, the blood, and the death saves you. Many of those scriptures that teach water saves, it's only using it in a symbolic way, like in 1 Peter 3:21. That's why Peter says, "not as the removal of the dirt from the body, meaning it's not a physical baptism,but a spiritual one which gives you a good conscience. This good conscience only comes by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Read the whole chapter of Hebrews 10. Do your research and divide the scriptures rightly, and you will see that water baptism is only a symbol or representation of the death of Jesus. Remember in Acts 10:47-48, these converts were speaking in tongues and filled with the Holy Spirit before they were baptized. Baptism is simply a confirmation of your salvation. That's why "Peter says, can any forbid water". And in Acts 8:36-38. Baptism has no meaning without your belief in the death and burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus died that day and went to Abraham's bossom to preach. The thief died the same day as jesus but repented first. Essentially he got saved so they may have just met that same day at Abraham's bossom "in paradise" as jesus was preaching. Then jesus rose from the dead because he is GOD and can do whatever he wants and talked a little with he's people in the land of the living. That is contextually not true! Re-read the text all over again. The loving kindness of Christ was freely exhibited by the theif looking & realising that Jesus Christ was indeed the saviour. Most christians do not know the historical purpose of water baptism, that is why this arguments continue. Water baptism did not start with John the Baptist, but it start about 100years before John. Water baptism was a means of converting a Gentile to a Jew. Not a means of salvation. Salvation is by the gospel. There is no water in the gospel. The gospel is a good news from God about what He has done through Christ to save mankind. We accept this good news by faith and we are saved. The point is simple...HOW could the repentant thief be baptized while on the cross? The thief repented. Jesus honored his sincere repentance and accepted him! Jesus obviously took into account the fact that it was physically impossible to baptize the thief, but He honored his repentance. God expects all persons who come to Christ in salvation FOLLOW CHRIST'S EXAMPLE and be baptized, as Jesus was by John. Our God is JUST, and makes allowances for TRULY extenuating circumstances BEYOND the control of man, when man SINCERELY wants to come to him. The African preacher is basing his argument on a faulty premise, making himself look STUPID.

I think you are correct and we are in agreement. The common denominator in the Bible when things go against the status quo is always GOD and Jesus. We know that we all would normally have to die and wait upon judgment day to for God to determine our final destination. But not in Lazareth's case. We know that a man and a woman are needed to procreate, but not in the case of Mary, she was a vessel for the Christ child. And we realize the baptism by water is the norm. But when Jesus feels some kind of way and brings forth an exception to his rule, REALIZE!!! what the common denominator is. IT'S JESUS and GOD. When a decision is made by that entity be silent and say thank you LORD. Then one should continue in the word to fulfill what is considered biblical teaching within what is asked of us by God. Rule changes are made by God and not by us. When God intervenes it is not up to us to question why.

When you minister to those who are ready do die in hospitals, prison and on the sick bed, what arrangements do you have for them to be baptised before they die in minutes? It is just common sense to know many are too frail to even be moved before they die. Baptism can never be a condition for salvation. John3:16 is a pointer.

The main argument was on baptism being necessary for salvation. Did the thief baptize? No! Did u go to heaven according to Jesus Christ? Yes! That answer it. John said, I baptize with water (symbolical) be he who comes after me ( Jesus Christ) will not baptize with water but with the Holy Spirit. Bible was written in a progressive way, it was not automatic. There was a time for water baptism and John the Baptist made it clear when he said " he who comes after me....he baptize with the holy spirit and with fire." The question is, who is baptizing now, John the Baptist or Jesus Christ?

I've read this scripture many times and these people had received the Holy Ghost already before baptism. so in keeping with the tradition, he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. they shouldn't refuse the water. but it doesn't state that it determines their salvation. That being said, I still always recommend people to get baptized. But i always think about this scripture when people argue over being baptized in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost versus being baptized in Jesus name. but you never see anybody specifically using the exact verbiage "I baptize you In The Name Of The Lord"
