I began by looking for Boris Johnson's speech, terrible PM but an excellent Orator - perhaps second to none in articulation and levity. I ended up finding Starmer's - and whilst I liked Boris's speech, I have to say Starmer's sounded more like the Statesman, and perfectly captured the sobriety and gravity of this phenomenal event. But then I recall from the PMQs he always had a way of powerfully communicating the seriousness of events. Perhaps this is what we need now, a serious Prime Minister.

A great speech as a fitting and respectful tribute to the queen and her 70years of devoted service to the country, and a subtly political speech, by referencing Covid and Johnsons disrespct for Her Majesty, the economic perils we are facing and King Charles commitment to the environment and his understanding for fairness, all under threat from the Tories. If you want to fill in the gaps to come to that conclusion, it’s because you are aware of how far behind the standards endorsed by the Queen and dutifully carried through by millions of ordinary people the behaviour of Johnson and his no 10 fell in those days. Starmer didn’t say it; if you heard it, you filled it in for yourself.
