For the first time ever, Blue Origin will be launching humans on the flight proven New Shepard 4 rocket on their NS-16 mission. To put an even better twist, founder of Blue Origin and the largely successful Amazon, Jeff Bezos, will also be flying to space on the New Shepard capsule. Similarly to the last 15 flights, New Shepard will launch the capsule on a sub-orbital trajectory. However, this time, four out of the six seats inside the capsule will be filled with living, breathing people.

Handing out “Astronaut Wings” to anyone simply willing/able to shell out the money for an elaborate roller coaster ride cheapens the title of “Astronaut” and is an insult to those who genuinely earned that title. You don’t get “pilot wings” and get to call yourself “pilot” if you buy a ticket and fly as an airline passenger… unless you’re 10 years old and a crew member gives you some plastic wings. “Spaceflight Participant” is a much more apt award for these intrepid passengers. (Imagine how silly an adult would look calling themself a “pilot” because they played dress up in a pilot uniform flew as an airline passenger!)
@AlaskaIsCold
@AlaskaIsCold 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on this one... I feel like these touristy suborbital flights cheapen the accomplishment of going into space, they should make something that says after say... the year 2000 only those that get to a stable orbit above the Karman line would qualify to get their wings. Otherwise you get some kind of new/lesser wings. like the plastic wings you were talking about. While I can agree that the technical aspect is pretty impressive... but if you have billions of dollars to throw at the problem is it really that hard? I don't really see any of these flights "Pushing the Envelope of Human Exploration." Which is what I see the real astronaut wings symbolizing. Like, Blue Orgins / Virgin doesn't count (If cooking a hot pocket takes longer than your flight time skimming the Karman line can you call it a flight?). Pretty much every manned nasa mission pushes it to some extent. I'm kind of on the line but leaning toward yes about the starship dear moon... they would be going further than any other human (distance from earth) but.. their role would be more for inspiring a new generation of innovation.

I agree 100% that these amusement park riders aren't Astronauts, but the "pilot" comparison isn't valid. Crews of REAL astronauts still have pilots, AKA captains & commanders, & the rest of the crew are Astronauts. & Wally Funk I feel Was an Astronaut even though she was never in space before. If your job is in space, you are an Astronaut. The pilots of the team Bransen ship, they ARE astronauts, the cargo in the back is NOT.

@@Schmidtelpunkt You could say that about the SLS consortium but not SpaceX. Yes they did profit from government money but supplied a launch service from it that now costs far less then previous and is dominating the industry. You missed Shatners profound reaction when he landed, Tim. You should have kept streaming. It was so moving and important to hear. To an old skeptic like me, I thought they were the most wonderful words and statements. The flight effected him deeply. I've never heard someone describe a space flight, such as it is, as eloquently and as profound as he just did. As he said, "Everyone needs to do this, we are protected by the thinnest of atmospheres and, in an instant, you're through it and it's gone. You're just left with the complete blackness of space. Is that what death is? One moment you're in the bluest of blue and the next, nothing. Everyone needs to do this". Incredible. You should have kept the stream going.

@@jaker.astrophotography8076 2050 sounds too pessimistic even when accounting for Elon time. VP Gwynne Shotwell seemed much more optimistic. I’d say more like 2035, but not sure how to back that up. Would ~15 years be enough time for Blue Origin’s and VG’s space tourism products to become profitable and worthwhile? Would I spend $20k (assuming it gets that cheap in 10 years) to take a Blue Origin ride or wait 5 years or so to enjoy space while on my way to a European vacation for just $2000? This space tourism thing is good fun publicity, but I think if VG and BO want to be serious, they’d have to focus on satellite deliveries and moon base related stuff. I’m guessing space tourism won’t bring in much money.
