Her Audrey is scrappy. Her Audrey is roughed up and knows it, but she’s a sweetie. I’m obsessed with her in this role.

I love Lena Hall and this did not disappoint at all. If it hits like this, I can only imagine what it's like on the context of the show.

I just love the Audreys in this production. They're definitively Audrey, broken by her past and by the men in her life but still endlessly hopeful, but no one is doing an Ellen Greene impression. It's wonderful.

I love that she’s building upon Tammy’s reinvention of the role and not going down the caricature route.

Lena has an outstanding voice. Still, every time Ellen Greene sang this song, she never let the audience forget that her character had a broken arm and was starting to believe that this dream she's dreamed for a while now will probably never come true. Everyone who covers it comes across as someone who is safe in a theater or recording booth, but Ellen made us believe that she was in danger and dreamed of somewhere green so hard that it hurt. This song is Little Shop of Horrors' "I Dreamed a Dream." To sing it with less emotion than Ellen Greene cuts the heart out of the song.

I had never seen the musical and had only seen snippets of the movie so I really didn’t know what to expect. I saw the show January 2020 and Tammy really made Audrey so grounded and pained. It’s was a great contrast to what was going on around her. I felt so drawn to her. I’m eager to see Lena, Rob and Bryce’s interpretations of their characters.

... And to think she was just 'one of the girls' on a reality tv show vying for chance to star on Broadway as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde!

I love her. And I love her voice. But this idea of “grounding” a character is just wrong for the show. The tragedy of Audrey comes from the dichotomy of the camp and the darkness. It losses the amplified tragedy when you set these characters in the real world. So, in simple terms, this show becomes less effective if it is “grounded”. It becomes depressing and not a tragedy. We don’t always need realism; we sometimes need the camp to make it applicable to a broader audience and situation. But again, beautiful performance and a talented actor.

Ashman says in his author's note to NOT play the material for camp. "The show's tongue is firmly in cheek so the actors should not be" and says to play the material straight.

The script also says that Ellen is the most vulnerable, innocent parts of Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Marilyn Monroe in spike heels and a push up bra - I think there’s a difference between playing real and her being grounded in the darkness of the show. I think there’s a risk she loses her innocence if she’s too embedded in it.

She has a good voice but it's lacks the emotion of interpretation of the original version.

I hate this rendition of Audrey I’m sorry 😭 I’m sure Lena Hall is very talented and I think she has a great singing voice but I really dislike her choices for the character.

Did they change the lyrics? By my count she gets it wrong twice. Annoying.

I certainly did not hear changed lyrics...??? It might be that the stage production has different lyrics than the movie?
@becqueolson8266

@@oyvey764 People commonly believe the lyrics are not what they actually are. They don't understand "kids PLAY Howdy Doody" and think it's "kids WATCH Howdy Doody" but in the movie the kids are shown clearly PLAYING with marionette Howdy Doody dolls. Can't recall the other difference, but it's also correct in the movie, wrong here with Lena.

@@becqueolson8266 Lena sings the lyrics of the original off-broadway musical from 1982, the movie came out afterwards in 1986 and some of the lyrics were changed for that. In the musical it has always been "watch Howdy Doody". So no, it's not "correct in the movie and wrong here". You can hear the original version of the song here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWbTfZ-Hlrt9f5o

"People commonly believe the lyrics are not what they actually are" Even to the point where those people think they're right and the person whose literal job it is to sing the song is wrong LOL
