Well done SpaceX and Polaris! A flawless operation! I know a lot of people are going to say "oh but we've done this before. that was barely a spacewalk" but we all just witnessed a small step towards a future where potentially millions could be doing this, with more advanced spacesuits and on the moon and mars. After getting twice the amount of money SpaceX did to build a 21st C Crew Transport, Starliner limps home uncrewed on its 1st 'crewed' spaceflight, and they STILL haven't got this right. CrewDragon, on the other hand is so operational that SpaceX right now is managing 2 simultaneous Crewed flights totally independent of each other demonstrating the versitility and capability of the spacecraft, superior to any other crewed spacecraft on or off the planet. More importantly, NASA does not believe in "single string" space access any more after the challenger disaster so they will insist on dumping money on ULA (BOEING and LOCKHEED MARTIN) for year to come. I wonder if ULA will finally admit that they must catch up and develop fully reusable capability (on their own investors' dimes) like SPACEX did. I doubt it.

The first US spacewalk was Ed White in Gemini 4 in 1965. He flew in a standard pressure flight suit of the day which was hardly “bulky”. And he left the vehicle entirely. And on Crew Dragon after a low exertion 5 minute “EVA” on the darkside of the Earth the temperature rose to 92 degrees F. Hardly seems to have “worked great”.

@@johnguptill9360 It's not surprising that a suit that's designed for a couple minutes of sticking your head out of a hatch with all life support connected via an umbilical to the leg is much less bulky than a NASA suit with self contained environmental systems for ~8.5 hours of EVA activity. Further capabilities could be obtained with an add on pack with the SpaceX design, but it'd need more than that to really be ideal for the rigors ISS maintenance EVA activity.

It looks to me like the puppet they were using was malfunctioning. The arms wouldn't move at all and then they went haywire. Probably would have been even more embarrassing to show the entire doll, so they just settled for waggling it around awkwardly for a bit and then pulling it back in. The green screen isn't so bad though, but this will only fool NPCs.

Amazing test! I do wish we could have seen them floating out there tethered but it's just a test, they have to get through things like this first. People can't expect them to be flipping around out there playing catch on the first go. It's too bad the second walk was in darkness. It must have been wild climbing out into the black, with only the sight of your capsule.

@tma2001 Ай бұрын
the Soviets and USA on their first free floating jaunts learned the hard way they are far too dangerous and both nearly ended in diaster when trying to return inside. There's a reason EVAs are more akin to rock climbing with a short tethered hook at all times and lots of handholds within easy reach. Or standing upright on the end of a robotic arm like in the Shuttle servicing missions.
@jameskelly3502
@jameskelly3502 Ай бұрын
1) SpaceX has no portable life support for these suits. The Teather is his air supply. 2) SpaceX has no EMU to help the astronaut return to the vehicle. 3) All orbital EVAs have astronauts Teather to the structure "and" maintain at least 1 point of contact with the structure at all times. EVAs are not for fun. It's very much life and death. SpaceX risks becoming the next "Ocean Gate".

The Russians think this is fake. Just a few observations they make. The hatch keeps reseating itself as if we are all watching this entire scene filmed upside down. The oxygen hose keeps hanging upward and amazingly when the hatch is finally removed, and the astronaut goes out into "space" we see nothing until his head and upper body are out of the ship? Did the camera quit working? Was this entire thing being shot upside down? Hmmmmmmmmmm I wonder? Why does the first astronaut's hands and arms stay up above their body the entire time, what are they doing. The astronaut in the back who has their legs crossed and their boot braced against the window, are they trying to keep from floating upward or hanging upward. The straps and hoses keep moving upward. Maybe it is real, but we never see the astronaut go completely out of the ship. They are 870 miles out into the Van Allen Belts in total weightlessness and the astronaut never let's go of the rail he is holding on to and are we seeing the "earth" off in the distance. They travel all this distance, and this is the best look of earth we can get. It looks very small. Is this real or fake? Unfortunately, we live in a world with a government that lies to us so who knows anymore. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZmbkndmnMZ_b9U

@@ozar_midrashim if you also examine around 34:49, you can see something else moving from around the window and in the same general direction... toward where I presume the hatch seal is breaking. However, I suspect that someone will be able to explain it as a piece of something that was inside finding its way to the hatch as they were opening it to vent out the remaining pressure inside (yes, I see it reads as '0.0' but that's probably not accounting for anything lower than 0.05), and finding its way to the greater vacuum of space than that which was in the cabin (which, if true, is of slightly more concern to me, as I would think the air filtration would be better, as well as a need for more stringent processes for keeping this environment 'clean'... but I'm not a space capsule engineer, so maybe it's fine..). But to everyone: believe what you will, I support people questioning everything and not taking everything at face value. Just be cautious of being overly certain and unable to be swayed from any other viewpoint or perspective, based solely on what you are convinced to be fact, and instead keep asking yourself 'What don't I see?".
