Given how often Magnus Carlsen arrives late to his games, it's no wonder he considers a watch a big advantage.

I'm glad he gave credit to the guy, but Magnus needs to quit making excuses and complaining about shit when he loses. I see Carlsen as the best chess player ever, not just alive, but my god he can't take a loss. An analog watch is perfectly fine to wear in a chess tournament. If that distracting you is why you claim you lost, you need to grow up.

Magnus is one anti-semitic comment away from pulling a full on Bobby Fisher career path. Step 1 - become a world chess champion Step 2 - Be hypersensitive and complain heavily to the tournament director about small things Step 3 - Have a mental breakdown and reply to any media attention with controversial declarations until they leave you alone

According to Hikaru Nakamura, these tournaments have meetings beforehand where they go over the rules, etc., and Magnus did not attend. If you have any issues with any rules in any contest, you need to address them before you participate, otherwise, do not participate. It is that simple. Magnus is a sore loser and this was another low-class move forever tainting yet another player's reputation by making a baseless accusation/implication.
@AsaniSywen
@AsaniSywen Жыл бұрын
Your crusade against Carlson is invalidating your points: 1)Carlson explicitly stated that Suleymenov is NOT at fault on multiple occasions. He complimented him ffs! 2) in the FIDE regulations it is explicitly stated that watches should not be allowed (this is ignored in this tournament) 3)Carlson also did not protest against any rule of the tournament! what he did was accusing the organizers for not taking cheating seriously by ignoring the FIDE regulations.
@papaboris8665

@@AsaniSywenI don't know anything about the other user's crusade against Carlsen, but as someone who has not commented about Carlsen before, I think it's pretty obvious Carlsen was a sore loser here. "This is not to accuse my opponent of anything, ... but" proceeds to blame his loss on losing his ability to focus because his opponent was wearing a watch. The implication is that he would have focused-and therefore not lost as he did-if his opponent had not worn a watch. So at the very least, he is tarnishing his opponent's victory by claiming that it was enabled by outside factors. Major sore loser man baby energy from Magnus on this one.
@AsaniSywen
@AsaniSywen Жыл бұрын
@@papaboris8665 dude, your logic is false. Carlsen never said or 'implied' that if Suleymenov wasn't wearing a watch Carlsen would have won. That is your (false) assumption. Carlsen only blamed himself. he blamed his own inability to focus. you are changing the premise 'Carlsen lost because he couldn't focus' to 'Carlsen lost because his opponent was wearing a watch' Carlsen does not think there was cheating involved. He even said Suleymenov 'deserved' that win. i don't know how much clearer that can be.
@sethsmith6042
@sethsmith6042 Жыл бұрын
@@AsaniSywenIt was a pretty backhanded compliment tbh. He didn't accuse suleymenov of cheating, but he basically said that he lost because he was distracted by the possibility of cheating. And there's a history behind this that will cause some people to wonder if suleymenov is cheating, tainting what is no doubt the greatest achievement of his career. Magnus could have addressed this matter in a different way, without blowing it up on social media

@@sethsmith6042 lol, you guys really want that he accuses another player of cheating? If you think that: 'my opponent played an amazing game and deserved that win' means that 'my opponent cheated', or that 'I couldn't focus' means 'my opponent cheated' that is YOUR problem, not Carlsen. Guys you are misenterpreting what Magnus said. He clearly accepted the defeat and the excellent game of his opponent. He just complaint about the watch that shouldn't be there and obviously he has a sensitive soft spot there. Do not forget that he says what he thinks in the good and the bad without filter! And lastly, he is a super genius and we shouldn't try to adjust his way of thinking to our way of thinking.

This is an extremely terrible idea. Someone who is a genius in one area is not a genius in all areas. Bobby Fischer was an antisemitic monster, but a chess genius, should what "he says what he thinks... without filter" be considered a good thing? Should we not try to adjust that way of thinking?

@@press_x_tojason Now you oversimplify. Magnus was not appeared yesterday and as far as I remember noone had any problem with his raw honesty, not to mention that he has lost enough games and this is not his first defeat. What I mean is that genius with a very big IQ, one way or another is in the spectrum of autism, and you cannot expect to have the same behavior with the majority of us; they experience the relations from a different perspective. So to conclude, his raw honesty is the proof that what he said for his opponent (excellent play) and his soft spot with cheating are ALL 100% true, without any hint to doubt his opponent win.

In an alternate universe: Carlsen: "Do you mind removing your watch during the game? I'd feel more comfortable" Suleymenov: "Sure, no problem" I don't know exactly how this went down, but had such a polite, direct request been refused by Suleymenov, he would be automatically be found guilty in the court of public opinion. I can't help but wonder if this is just another case of people forgetting how to communicate with other human beings, and instead choosing to appeal directly to authority figures. And when they don't get what they want, ranting on social media. For so many people this seems to be their only way of dealing with interpersonal problems.

I really don’t understand that Ba6 “finesse” in the opening… as White I’m happy to develop my Queen to c2 to support e4. Kinda ridiculous. Edit: Looking through the game with an engine, …Ne8 is definitely the worst move played which cost the game, but I also think …d5 was really poor defense, …Rd8 works much better there.
@Steve-eb8jc

the Q on c2 makes playing d5 pretty much impossible for white which is black's biggest concern. White can always play e4 eventually but now the queen is not well placed on c2 as there's a half open file against it and it is staring at the e4 pawn.

I was very concerned about hans niemann cheating scandal, and I think there is a real possibility he did cheat vs magnus and other times. This time white moves are so natural and humanlike that even if that's cheating, there's no way we can argue about that. So we can live and feel a brilliancy as a brilliancy and just be amazed about it, now we don't even know what to feel anymore, come on for real?

If Carlsen really wanted to make a stand, he should have refused to play from the very start. It surely won't look good to become the herald of anti-cheating only after losing games. This kind of half-measures only deliver half-messages that are harmful to everyone, including himself, who seems to be a sore loser more and more.

Carlsen didn't instantly realize that the presence of the watch would be distracting. Perhaps he thought he'd be able to move past it. That may be why he didn't refuse to play from the beginning. It is normal to not always anticipate how things will affect your concentration. It is normal for players to share their thoughts about their games afterwards. That is what Carlsen did. One time for the haters so maybe they can understand why Magnus would tweet this knowing his detractors will attack him for it. Magnus did not accuse his opponent of cheating he did the exact opposite and gave him credit for playing a great game. This is the best player in the world, and likely the only one who would get tournament organizers to listen, taking care of and looking out for the future of the game he has dedicated his life to playing. Tournament chess will cease to exist if tournament organizers do not start taking potential cheating as serious as USADA takes PED use in sports for instance. Well, first things first. If indeed the venue forbad “watches”, then White did cheat. Period. Myself I don’t see the harm in a non-ticking watch; but perhaps the rule was made to forbid watches generally simply to prevent loopholes. I’m not a particular fan of Carlsen’s; nevertheless I see, in fairness, an unfortunately null game for White no matter how brilliantly played.

The venue didn't forbid it, which is the problem. The anti-cheating rules of chess forbid it, but the arbiter allowed it.

I'm sorry but somebody has to say it; Alisher played NORMAL GM CHESS. Carlsen's positional play is just flat out STUPID in this game; It's almost Completely Lost after he moves the Rook to C8. The engine evaluation may not reflect it but that's just because... a) Engines can play 8 straight only moves to untangle b) There is still a Horizon Effect with engines and so Even the most UpTo Date Stockfish might get his rook Positionally Trapped in the middle game against Leela for example. Carlsen's opponent did NOT show me ANY great moves to get this game to the point where it was totally losing for the world number one.
@SaiphxXx
@SaiphxXx Жыл бұрын
Lmao you know internet went too far when a random dude not only claims that Magnus' positional play is "stupid", but also claims that ENGINES don't understand the position either... Rc8 looks like a normal move to me, I would probably rather play Rd8 but the engine literally says that Magnus' Rc8 was the better choice... I haven't heard any analyst complain about Rc8. Most commentators agree that the problems started after Ne8 and yes the position doesn't look particularly great before that but it's not particularly bad either, but Magnus is 300 Elo higher than his opponent so he should try unusual moves in this position like Ne8. The problem is in this game his opponent played perfectly from start to finish, had a bit of luck that the position allowed something like Ng5, and also had the audacity to try it.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a position at this level of play that was so one-sidedly tactically rich. Carlsen's Qb8 was an awful move, and then he poured gasoline on the fire with Rc8. Suleymenov seized the opening and absolutely whupped him. And Magnus looked like a crybaby afterwards, while that kid will never forget obliterating one of the best ever. Great analysis as always, Jerry. Thanks.

There's a lot to say about this game but the one remark I want to add is that your assessment at 3:36 that gxf3 followed by Rg1 is good for white is incorrect. Considering the structure and the the placement of black's bishops it'll be extremely difficult for white to prove an advantage. Just to prove the point... after Rg1 black can actually 0-0! and if white plays Bh6 then g6! Bxf8?! Bxf8 and you suddenly realise white is actually in trouble. You know d5 is coming, you know a5 is coming, the structure is shite. This is a positive exchange sacrifice for black and with perfect play black wins this position. This is not merely my personal opinion. I'm using Chessify's super computer.

I think Magnus is losing his touch overall. What with not participating in the world tournament, starts losing to lower rated players, starts accusing players of cheating I think he doesnt realize he can in fact actually really just shake his head and simply say "Guess I'm getting old". He thinks that since he's been world-champ multiple times, so losing is disgraceful and like letting his fans down. I think that pressure is just causing him to do and say ridiculous things, When in fact he could just shake his head and simply say "Guess I'm getting old".
