I started basic obedience training last May and have watched seminars and dozens of trainers and training methods, and let me tell you this man right here is my favorite! He doesn't use any harsh punishments nor use just treats, he uses natural corrections for dogs to understand! I have a 2 year old White Shepherd that goes crazy when we go out; I mean like whining, jumping, pulling, biting the leash etc. I’ve been guilty of not training him properly on the leash, which has made it such a “chore” to take him out. Nothing else has worked, but this video! Just in 30 minutes of repeating this process, my dog did not jump, bite the leash, whine, or bolt out the door! I also received the most eye contact I’ve ever had with him outside and it’s only day 1. He still has a lot to learn, but I’m really looking forward to seeing his progress❤️ Thank you so much for this video🙏🏼

I will watch every video, no matter how repetitive. This man is the brightest gem in the KZbin dog training universe. I am filming my first edited video and totally mention this very method and where I learned it. Nothing is better for overall obedience than this. It sharpened up every other aspect of my training. Between this and the Gentle Leader, dogs are far better off.

Absolutely agree. I’ve been implementing Joel’s loose leash method, incredible improvement. I have the same type of dog that he showed in one earlier upload (it’s was a GSD) forward moving, starts to go if he sees something - cannot help it as he’s a Kelpie. Got a gentle leader after watching that upload. Unbelievable. After a week my girls are walking him. Insane. Occasionally even with the gentle leader he’ll almost half trot diagonally which I had to work on, kinda like side on like a thoroughbred about to race. But no pulling ect. Now that’s even gone too.

She’s not a beast like some of these dogs but our walks are now loose leash and I walk with a regular gait and she is with me. The stage is set at the door and there is no more pulling, no dog reactivity, no cutting in front of me. I didn’t use treats just a few well timed corrections (telling her what’s up!😉). I see other dog walkers being pulled and walked by their dog and I recognize my old self in them. Joel is the real deal but you have to be willing to set door/leash boundaries. Two thumbs aloft!

The ONLY method that has pretty much changed my Kelpies reactivity. I’ve owned pittbull, Jack Russell, cared for many other dogs. This boy When I got him, barely handled, never been in a house. Reactive to everything and anything that moved especially people. Had tiny success with other methods, Joel’s method has knocked it out of the park. This training is exactly what I applied to my 90 lbs lab mix and the result is almost instant! I came across Joel’s channel about 5mos ago and it was life changing! One day I accidentally left the door wide open and to get something in the car and my dog was just sitting there by the door waiting, I was so shocked it worked! Now he’s 100% trained when it comes to any doors including the garage door, I don’t have to worry about him flying out at all! Amazing stuff!!!

I used to do this with my previous horse from the moment I met him and the result was indeed that he was always able to walk off leash very neatly. He also always stopped before every open door, even when getting him off leash from the pasture, so this method works great!

Your methods really does work. We had five dogs that would immediately run out the door every time we opened it, it was such a pain. But after applying your methods they are near perfect and rarely try to run out.

Beckman's loose leash method was a game changer for my dog and I!! I always tried Ceaser's short but relaxed method for both the dogs I've had but had almost no success. My current dog was better but still wanted to be ahead of me by half it's body length. Once I used a gentle leader and the stop, crouch, step to the side, and correct, my dog walks with me PERFECTLY and now I LOVE walking him daily even MORE!! Side note my dog hates to be corrected like that now. He checks in constantly and seems a little too worried when I stop to test him.

Totally agree; from fostering over 20 dogs these last couple of years i have found that if on day one (regardless if the dog is 9weeks old or 3 years old) you establish the simple rule that the dog has to listen/check-in with you it makes everyone's life a lot easier and sets your dog up for success. And don't use a harness, it makes it much harder to communicate with your dog.

i havent been able to get my dog to calmly walk out the door for a walk EVER. She jumps, bolts, grabs and tugs on the leash as hard as she can, & is generally just super overstimulated when getting ready for a walk. I watched this video and decided to try it with just her martingale collar (we usually use her Freedom no-pull harness) she caught on within minutes. MINUTES!! I've tried similar methods but this one gets 10/10 from me (and my super hyper American Bully) ! :) :) :)

This is great stuff. My Shepherd mix has a strong prey drive and always perks up around small cats. The other day as we were doing the whole door thing yet again, I opened the door and a cat was a couple of feet away near our door entrance. Surprise! She immediately startled and looked like she was going to give chase, but she didn’t! I didn’t more forward so she didn’t move forward. I closed the door for a min and stepped back away. She was definitely excited to try and rush out, but never actually did. She was a little of a nervous basket case checking in every second but turning toward the door as if saying “Hurry up!” to me. Yet, she never rushed out even as I opened the door again. Once we started walking, she was a little spastic looking all over the place for the cat, but never pulled on the leash. This is good stuff!

Yes, impulse control. I preach this to my puppy adopters in fact just did a video on impulse control training in seven week old puppies. They gotta have it before they can be trained anything in my opinion. Impulse control, self control, gotta have it and you can start training it in very young puppies. Also, people act WAY too excited when they get ready to take the dog out for a walk.

You nailed it sir. I "have" this problem with all the rescued Rotties that I take it. It takes maybe three days and some reinforcement to get them to wait at an open door while looking out at the traffic going up and down on the side walk by the house. I use "out" and "in" commands along with hand signals with the goal being completely on hand signals for all behavioral commands.

I started training this with my extremely smart 10 week old miniature dachshund, Georgie, because he was pulling the leash CONSTANTLY and I couldn’t stand it. Even though he’s a puppy, I’m incredibly thankful for this video and glad I taught him this. It took only a day for him to completely change his attitude. It doesn’t matter big or small dogs, they MUST know who’s in charge. They need a leader.

@@ivyrose779 It’s big, but workin the standard. His father has 12 European championships and his mother 4, so he’s definitely within the standard and taking after his father. I don’t care about that though. I just care he’s healthy, good and guarding and alerting, and a good family dog. That being said, the kids took a lot of training and retraining and he’s always trying to raise his rank above the kids and own them. My 8 year old struggles the most because he knows he can overpower him so he has to be the most contentious with his behavior and training. It’s not a dog that’s just a pet. Everyone needs to be interested in learning about dog behavior and needs an SME in the house who can guide and monitor. Not for people who aren’t passionate about learning dog behavior or really know what they’re doing.

I taught my girls “wait”. So they wait for my release cue if “ok” to go out with me. But can still use a little work when they want to go outside when they see something they want. I have a fully fenced in yard so they can’t get out to the street. I can actually fling the door open and they’ll wait for me to say “ok” to go out the door. That way they don’t rush outside, no pushing but I gotta teach them to check in with me once they go outside.

They'd like the money but don't deliver. While I am amazed that your techniques work I have began to depend on those as well as my own. I have a little different perspective as I was actually raised in a little or German Shepherds so I have some understanding of dogs. Yea that's huge and key to have the dog checking in constantly. There's where my 9 month old girl flops out. She does great in backyard loose leash training, sit stay, lie down etc but the second we get out in the real word, she's non stop sniffing and looking for other dogs. I've spent about 7 months correcting, switching from chains, prong, gentle leaders (which do work but certain drawbacks, like with the gentle she constantly rubs her face off my leg and read its not good for dobes with their long necks) and then the prong seems to frustrate her especially when another dog passes, making it tough to get by without her melting down. Now this all said, she's in the middle of heat right now so not being too hard on her but this door thing does work if you keep on your dog with it rep after rep, it makes them really have to check in with you. I can't believe i'm still having leash problems with my girl TBH, all my other dobes within 1 month were fantastic but this one has been uber challenging with reactivity issues.

This HAS changed my life and my two Labs. But one just loses his mind each time he gets to walk, even if its every day. So this sequence helps him calm down in that first 10-15 minutes when he wants to be a jetski, and wastes the energy he needs for the uphills back home. I live in an apartment complex, my home too small to walk him. Plus the jealous FOMO other Lab needs to be left behind in the small garden. Here goes.... Door method at front door. Then the most unlogical slalom method in the parking lot and, around cars, trees, shade parking poles, completely opposite to what he wants to do. Then door method AGAIN at street gate. Then, slalom to and fro across the street (if its safe) and every object (tree, street pole, street furniture) you can find. Also, pop leashes on him for every strong pull. Once he has his mind back and starts walking sort of OK, "reward" every strong pull with a frustrating illogical slalom - to and fro across the street if it's safe, or around tree, bushes, lighting poles.... and pop leash for every nonsense. EXCEPT.... give him ten or so chances to pee on things when first out of gate. Hooe this helps someone else with a strong, older Lab / Labradoodle rescue, that has had no training or socialization.
