I think it's an old person thing at this point. I used to draw cars with an antenna and make a phone gesture with my thumb and pinky extended. Those things don't make practical sense anymore. I like the stock antenna because of the classic design of the car. Your video was hilarious. Worth the watch.
@MisterMiyada3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephen. I still have the stock one for the days I might feel “classic”. Thankfully it’s super easy to switch it back.

Pretty hilarious video! Actually this gets a perfect score for price, ease of installation and results. I think it looks really great. Much more sleek. I actually use it listen to AM and FM radio quite a bit and for me it gives just as good a reception as the OEM stock antenna. Please keep up these install videos. Your MX-5 things video inspired me to install multiple other items that I’m really enjoying also. Thanks!!

That long antenna is the same one on the MP5 you used to own. I should know cause I currently drive an MP5 (2003) and I replaced the antenna with something similar to the Stubby. I'm going to buy an MX5 RF this year and, after watching this video and a couple other of your videos, I am going to buy an antenna replacement and those trunk poppers (although the $100 price tag seems high for what they are). Yes, I watched your video on buying a Miata so I'll be checking that website out.

The Stubby rocks, the first update I did on my MX-5

We bought the Stubby for our 2017 MX-5 and the quality of reception was not there. It sounded good at home, but once we drove around town, we got a lot of static in our radio, so we sent ours back.
@Brockthedog3153 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed the video. I returned my stubby. Reception driving around town and then trying to stretch my sports talk show station into a longer haul just wasn’t as good as stock. Looks hella better though.

I never listen to radio. So I went with the Flyin Miata screw in Delete. It is much less mass.

I'm a simpleton so someone help me understand the following: If a stubby antenna works as well as the longer wire antenna, why didn't Mazda install the shorter antenna to begin with? And why do they install both the long wire and the shark fin antennae? And yes, the humor was appreciated.
@MisterMiyada3 жыл бұрын
Why the long wire? I’m guessing someone at Mazda said no to adding a rotating satellite dish.
@blurayffan663 жыл бұрын
I read they did it as they thought it was more fitting, a sort of throwback in design to older versions. At least the Stubby is reasonably cheap!
@Lateralus143 жыл бұрын
I thought the sharkfin was just for the GPS antenna, not the radio antenna. But I'm not 100% sure about that.
@MisterMiyada3 жыл бұрын
@@Lateralus14 here in the US, the shark fin is definitely not for the AM/FM radio.

It was one of the first purchases. Wish they didn't even have it because the trunk antenna is beautiful and symmetric. But that's only for xm radio? Who even uses that anymore

I’m planning on getting a short antenna when I get my Mx5 next year. But I’m with you on the stubby having the word.. stubby, so I might try to find something else. It’d be interesting to see what other short antennas actually matches the oem black plastic vase better.

I haven’t found an alternative yet. Later I’ll let you know if plastidip affects the signal performance at all.
@blurayffan663 жыл бұрын
I have seen some videos of buyers of the Stubby in the UK having poorer radio reception/signal sing it. I don't listen to the radio very often but might pick one up for aesthetics. Thank goodness tho here in Spain we do not have that ugly shark fin on the rear.
@MisterMiyada3 жыл бұрын
I never use satellite so the shark fin is another useless thing I have on mine. Mazda could have save a few grams of weight! How is it in Spain? Are you able to customize what accessories you have or do they force certain items and packages on you when you pick a car?
@blurayffan663 жыл бұрын
@@MisterMiyada At the moment there are 3 basic packages here in sunny Spain- Origin, Zenith and Zenith Sport and you can then add on any accessories you like to any of these 3 versions. There is a 4th version, the "Black & Red Edition" which has the 17" BBS rims and comes in a Deep Crystal Blue. But, for example, the BBS rims can be added on any of the 3 other versions, and any of the other accessories you wish so there is a bit of flexibility there. From what I have seen most dealers here just offer these versions and don't fit anything additional, say for example, the BBS rims, forcing you to pay extra for them even if you only want the basic Origin model that does not have them fitted originally from Mazda. There is a good variety between all the 3-4 versions, and then the option to add extras to any of those as already mentioned. Generally here in Spain there is less skulduggery going on at the car dealers compared to the US (at least compared to California where I lived for 18 years). Sure car prices can be about 7-8% more expensive here vs. US but road tax and Insurance is far, far cheaper. Hope this makes sense- yeah clear as mud I hear you say! (My car ships out next Sat from Japan- so excited!).

The antenna is probably the worst thing of the MX-5. No idea why they insisted on having such an unsightly thing hanging out of a beautiful car. First thing I'd remove asap!
