I am doing that as well. but I have seen things that I was not taught in school that would have made college math easier. Somethings I could not solve since I did not have those skills, now I do. Most of it - factoring polynomials - more cpomplex ones.

This is a lot simpler and quicker than was made out in the video. As a child in the sixties, I learned that these were called simultaneous equations. You simply multiply one of the equations by a number so that one of the variables is the same in both equations. And then you subtract one equation from the other to eliminate that variable. Here, you don't need to do this as there is one x in both equations. You simply subtract one equation from the other to get 4y = 12, so y = 3. Substitute 3 for y in one of the original equations to find the value of x, which is 2.

The video just showed all the different ways possible to solve. Some people prefer elimination (the method you described), some like substitution, and others prefer graphing. All three work and are taught in schools.

X = Y - 1 Now substitute X for Y - 1 in the equation X + 3Y = 11 giving you Y - 1 + 3Y = 11 Now add 1 to both sides Y + 3Y = 12 Add Y and 3Y together 4Y = 12 Divide both sides by 4 Y = 3 and if Y = 3 then X = 3 - 1 = 2

Greetings. The answers are X=2, and Y=3. We determine the values for X and Y by first adding the equations to get 4Y=12 from which it is determined that Y=3. Using Y =3, we substitute this value of Y in equation 2, we have X-3=-1 and X=-1+3 after transposing, leaving X= 2. Lovely

You mean you subtract the equations. (If you add them, you get 2X + 2Y = 10 and still have to remove a variable in order to solve for X or Y).

i got (1) - (2) 4 y = 12 y = 3 sub into (2) x - 3 = -1 x = 2 and was correct in this case it does not matter if its (2) - (1) as well

I need help with this one please. [X+Y=188 and X-Y=34] I have no trouble "isolating?" X. [188-Y-Y=34] or [34+Y+Y=188]. My trouble is "isolating?" Y. I either get [Y=188-X], which, when substituted in the other equation gives me [X-188-X=34], which gives me [-188=34] or if I try [Y= -34 + X], I get [X - 34 - X = 188]. HOW do I isolate Y?

You're not distributing that negative when substituting. You would have [x - (188 - x) = 34] which would give you [2x -188 = 34] so x = 111. The easiest way to solve this since the coefficients are 1 would be to add the equations and have the y's cancel out. You get [2x = 222] which goes to x = 111

As soon as I saw that both equations had a single X I would just subtract the second from the first. The X is now gone and you solve for Y.

I'm 66 years old and can solve this in two seconds without aid or pen or calculator. Not trying to be a ____, but don't others immediately ballpark this in their heads, then test out their intuition, then adjust accordingly?

I'm even older and it was obvious to me. However, my daughter said she'd rather go and slit her wrists than waste time thinking about this. I've never needed to use equations in my long life and I think that unless you need to use this kind of maths in your life, it's a waste of brain space, especially at my age when I can't remember why I'm looking in the fridge....
