But they don't know each other's secret identities. So Adrien sees Marinette as a friend, and Ladybug brushes off Cat Noir's flirting, because neither of them realize that the person who wants them is the same as the person who they want. Honestly, it's kind of brilliant. They built a pair of interlocking love triangles using only two characters.

I feel the same way! For a while now all I’ve seen are other video essays that point out the mess of production, inconsistencies and flaws, and I forgot why I loved this show in the first place. I’m emotionally invested- I cry, I laugh, I cheer on characters and some moments genuinely shock me. This video focuses on the positive bits and I agree, it’s absolutely refreshing.
@teallineart88052 жыл бұрын
Alright. You might hate me and you’re definitely allowed to. I find it refreshing when it gets shat on rather than praised. I just find there’s so much more people that like it rather than hate it and it just confuses me, because all I can focus on are the flaws and how they just keep on piling on top of eachother. When I find other people who hate it, it makes me feel less insane, because I just genuinely didn’t get why people like it. There are some baby shows that I like but it’s usually due to them having something more to offer an adult like me. Sesame street’s very meme worthy and very clever and creative with how they teach kids. (Especially stuff like alphabet jungle and the great numbers game. Those animations are so good and fun to watch.) Blue’s clues is very wholesome and is great at teaching kids how to connect the dots and solve mysteries. The upside down show is genuinely funny and it’s so entertaining to watch the main characters go on adventures and try to solve their problems. So, yeah. Definitely baby shows, but they’re at least watchable and can hold your attention. Miraculous Ladybug is unwatchable to me. It feels like it mostly just strings you along with the will they won’t they love interest stuff and so many shows have done that to the point where it’s just tiring to deal with. Because for the most part, it’s usually a case of they will. And oh my god, the original scooby doo series was less formulaic than this show. Chloe came off as an annoying bitch to me and even Marinette would be frustrating to deal with a lot of the time. Just all around a frustrating show. But, I should also probably provide some more context. I first heard about the show when just the promo pictures and screenshots of certain scenes came out and I was in love with the concept. A superhero show for girls with an artsy, feminine and slightly gothic art style. (By gothic, I mean more like Batman.) Yes, please! And I had such high hopes for the show. I was theorizing in my head where they might take it and the potential character arcs, story arcs and maybe even plot twists. I was getting myself amped up. By the time it came out, I was so frustrated and disappointed. I was hoping for something like Adventure Time or Avatar the last airbender and I certainly didn’t get that. Honestly, I was only able to get through half of season 1, because it felt like it was giving me a headache and it felt like a waste of time to watch the rest of it. It bugged me so much that I didn’t realize it was meant for more younger kids. So, I feel slightly embarrassed about that now, but I should’ve predicted that. A lot of Nickelodeon stuff lately seems like it’s being made for more younger kids. Who knows? Maybe they’ll discontinue Nickelodeon and just become Nick Jr full time. But, I’m still of the belief that even little kids deserve better than what this show gave them. Even for kids that liked it, I felt like they were getting ripped off. It could’ve been like SpongeBob SquarePants or Phineas and Ferb or one of the younger kids shows I mentioned earlier. But instead, it just felt lazy. I don’t know. Maybe one of these days I’ll binge it from beginning to end, but I’d have to be really high/drunk to get through it. Otherwise, it’d be impossible for me. This is just my opinion, though. I can have really high expectations for the shows and movies that I watch.(Especially, since Hollywood’s been getting very lazy and derivative lately.) Sorry if this was annoying to read. This rant was mostly just for me to come to terms with the reality of the show. I’m happy that you liked it and I will continue to like the things that I like and maybe find new things to like. Even if those things are baby shows. After all, tv/movies/books/etc are meant to entertain and help people unwind. If they cause you stress and anger, they’re just not meant for you. That’s pretty much it. Thank you for your time. :)

@mantaraywizard3 жыл бұрын
i get why though. character development is not always linear, and the episodes themselves arent really supposed to be linear either. There is no "next episode in the storyline" its just a collection of stories that happen in a span of time that you can jump in to from any episode (except finales). While i think this is changing for season 4, from season 1 to 3 you're supposed to judge how the characters have changed season by season, not episode by episode. It can be hard to miss since its so slice of life-y, but its definitely there.
@LancePuns3 жыл бұрын
@@mantaraywizard absolutely this. Going from a season 1 episode, watching Marinette completely fail to be comprehensible around Adrien, then going to season 3 and seeing her have full conversations with him with only the occasional frustration is the development. It's gradual, it takes time. That's definitely not the only example, but it was the first that came to mind.

@Breanna Wynn Most people don't criticise the show because they hate it, though. I can only speak from my perspective, so you can take this with a grain of salt. I started watching Miraculous when season 1 had just ended and was excited for season 2. I loved the characters and liked the episodic format and was excited about what season 2 was going to offer. If season 2 had simply continued the status quo, I wouldn't have had any issue with it as I liked that way already. But then season 2 started introducing new superheroes, set up Chloe for a redemption arc and introduced Nathalie and Lila as antagonists. This showed to me that the show was willing to set up plot arcs for some of the characters and increase the dramatic tension of the story and I looked forward to seeing the stories change. But then the new superheroes only got help out sometimes which meant that they would have little impact on the story. I was a little disappointed about that but in the end, it didn't bother me too much. Then Miraculous started releasing episodes like Oblivio where Ladybug and Chat Noir would discover each other's identities and get together. But then their memories are conveniently erased, so it hasn't actually happened. Despite that I liked season 2 even more than season 1 and was very excited for season 3 as it looked like the stakes were rising and Chloe was getting close to her redemption. And at first things looked good. Chloe became more rational and was even the first and only person to ever reject an akuma after it had already possessed her and understood that she couldn't be Queen Bee very often because her identity was known. Then, in the final episode, she suddenly lost all her understanding and patience for this and turned on her idol Ladybug just so she could be Queen Bee and turned into an even more whiny and entitled brat than she ever was before. It made absolutely no sense to me. When fans talked to Thomas Astruc about it, he said that Chloe was always a bad person and that a redemption was never possible for her which is horrible to say about a 14 year old girl who had done nothing but improving in the previous two seasons. Then came Chat Blanc which also could have been a really cool plot idea for a later season which would have had a strong impact on Ladybug and Chat Noir. But instead Ladybug is told everything that happens through Bunnyx, is barely to react to anything and then time is reversed again and her memory is erased, so nothing really happened. This shows that the writers want to show us cool scenarios but don't want to risk actually changing the plot, so they just show us throwaway ideas and then step back to the status quo and expect the fans to like what they did even though the reason for my excitement was just literally erased. Moreover, I realized that the times where I felt actually uncomfortable watching Marinette have increased by a large amount. Her confessing her love to a supposedly wax statue of Adrien and actively trying to sabotage Kagami during their treasure hunt made me actually cringe and I'm sure that she wouldn't have done such things in season 1. It started feeling like the creators weren't really trying to write her in a compelling way anymore. Many fans have noticed the same problems and addressed Thomas Astruc about them and he replied that the show had great writing, that it was just a kids show and blocked people who even slightly criticized anything about the show. I like many things about Ladybug and I still see what made me love it in the first place but it is increasingly overshadowed by bad writing such as the examples that I listed and I'm not sure if I want to continue watching the show if I'm just going to be frustrated over and over again.

Yo I know I'm late to the party, but just wanted to let you know that I feel the same way. MLB gets highly criticized by the review community a lot of the time for stuff that I think it could do but that its purpose is not really to do, you know? Like, this show isn't trying to be a heroic epic like Avatar, it's about two cringey oblivious super-hero teens and their friends fighting an evil butterfly man and confronting their feelings while being in a love square with themselves. And that's what I need sometimes. With season 3 and 4 it's trying to add in some plot moments and heighten the tension a bit, which is something it needed, but I think it's more of a setting up the ultimate ending thing than anything else. Like, they can't really break the fundamental rules of the show (like identities) because the status-quo-yo has to fix everything and it would release all the tension it's been building. But it's still getting better all the same, and they're moving towards that slowly but surely I think. All this rambling to say I totally agree, I just enjoy MLB for what it is, cause it brings me a good bit of fun, and that's what I'm here for.

Hi. Just wanted to let you know after this video, I started watching Miraculous. I am a 23 years old guy with a full time call center job. I loved cartoons and anime, but nothing repetitive like Miraculous. I am on Season 3 now. I love every second of this show. It is my daily joy. I've never thought I'd get into it. I knew there was some over arching plot, but I thought it was silly and wasn't developed well. I was wrong. Even the first season that many people thought slow was wonderful to watch. I thought I was going to be bored out of my mind but I am not. I love this show. I love you. I love Miraculous so much. I watch it on my 30 minute breaks. I watch it in the morning before work. I love it. It gives me so much serotonin. Thank you CJ for this video. As someone who started working only 8 months ago after graduating, I was lamenting that I am a part of the capitalistic cogwheel (it does pay well but still). Miraculous is helping me tremendously.

I began liking Chloe when she became Queen Bee. I loved how she was mean but also good-hearted, not your typical hero, and how she fought against Mayura. The way she resisted Hawk Moth once was impressive for her character & you'd notice she does care about Sabrina and her butler (the ppl closest to her). Real development. But they RUINED IT by pretending she never learned anything & introducing a dumb half-sister who'd take her miraculous. Pollen belongs to CHLOE 😭. Ugh. I can't believe we're back to square one with her character.
@tkun35022 жыл бұрын
year late comment moment, but as much as I initially felt this way about it, they made Chloe regress to being bad before her sister was introduced. It was an intentional choice to not try to fully redeem her and make her one of the good guys, because she never really learns her lessons about how abusive she is. It's pretty bold for a kids show to do that, I think a lot of bully characters like her end up getting pretty much fully redeemed even though a lot of what she's done is despicable.
@spaghetto98362 жыл бұрын
@@tkun3502 It's in a nonsensical way though. It doesn't feel natural, it's like a pretty paper plane that took off just to hit a wall & crumble. Thomas also said online that the only reason he didn't finish her development is bc he _personally_ dislikes her for resembling his childhood bully... that doesn't sound like he planned her downfall from the start as a cautionary tale. He just sloppily introduced a half-sis to make up for it & to replace her. You can see current Chloe saying stupidly overt things like declaring she's a bad person & can never change (or something to that effect). Her growing relationship with the people around her just... halted. It's not good writing, Thomas just doesn't care about her like he used to and that's a tragedy. I get that not everyone can be redeemed, but I love redemption as a narrative theme & find those kinds of characters the most compelling of all. So imagine how interesting Chloe could've been if they hadn't nerfed her potential. She had the perfect support group by her side to change (whereas ppl who don't change tend not to have anyone when they need it the most), plus she's a teen still, with years ahead of her. A literal 14yo. All wasted potential storylines to me.

@tkun3502 I mean.... there's people in real life who started off as awful people who (through some epiphany or an important event or whatever) got it in their head that what they're doing isn't right and SLOWLY transform themselves into decent people. Not NICELY nice people, but people who stop doing bad shit.... ALTHOUGH I still do agree with that one part of that essay cj used. I'm just saying both views are valid. 💀

i’ve been a part of the ladybug fandom since i was sixteen (i’m 21 now yikes), and so my opinions of the show tend to be drenched in like the specific brand of bitter anger and disappointment that can only come from petty fandom discourse (unrealistic and biased expectations, etc). i loved the first season so much and the promises it made with its characters, and i was disappointed with a lot of the follow-through in seasons 2 and 3. but that being said, i still have a tremendous amount of love and affection for the show and it’s really nice to be reminded of why. i adored this video. i really enjoyed hearing you sing miraculous’ praises, especially regarding world-building and the way the show addresses emotional abuse as a central theme, because i really do think those are some of the show’s strong suits. my biggest legitimate gripe with the show is that in their attempts to be inclusive and multicultural, they have a history of missing the mark quite a lot regarding sensitivity and accuracy- lightening the skin of characters of color when they transform, characters fulfilling harmful stereotypes, incorrect depictions of culturally-specific clothing, etc (thomas astruc hire some cultural sensitivity consultants challenge). but as a poc myself, i would rather have somewhat flawed attempts at representation than no attempts at all, and the diversity of the show was one of the things that made me fall in love with it in the first place. all in all it’s such a sweet, fun, and kind show with a lot of heart and soul. and its exactly the elements you highlighted that make it so wonderful and that have brought me so much joy over the past five years. it’s a very good simple baby show and i do deserve to feel good. thanks for this video and best of luck on your god quest.

I definitely think there’s something to it. Maybe not malicious, but a technique to ensure lots of viewers. Sailor Moon uses the same type of repetition, and I think the point is the repetition breeds familiarity, which brings comfort, which gives you that dopamine hit every time you hear and see the same sequence. Effective, but I mean some people might find it boring. In the new sailor moon I found it wasted too much of most episodes time where I would’ve preferred more dialogue and plot 🤷🏻♀️ at least miraculous though doesn’t seem to have that same problem. For the most part, this show feels like exactly what a superhero show should be. It’s fun, it’s funny, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s mostly episodic. Too many superhero shows, comics, and movies take themselves far too seriously when superheroes aren’t a concept that works when it’s overly serious. Superhero stories can certainly have drama in them, but an overly dark and serious superhero almost never works.

Eventually me and both the kids made it a point to get to grandmas to watch every single episode of miraculous. It’s soooo good. It’s brilliant and visually beautiful too. My friends loved this show in middle school. Honestly if it meant something to someone, great. That’s what matters to me.

We had to watch this show in my french class back in highschool. Everyone just shat on it and laughed at it because we all thought it was for babies. In order to get some extra credit in the class a friend and I started watching the show in French with Subtitles after school, and we low key unironically started to love it.

Good for you. Unfortunately, I would’ve been one of the people shitting on it and laughing at it. But, I’m an asshole, so…

I remember watching the movie of this show, where they went to New York. And seeing a native american character (eek I forgot her name) was just ✨yes✨, because she was a badass and chill character and I hope we learn more about all the Americans showcased in that movie.

I have small children so I've watched multiple episodes of this show multiple times, though never back to back in the correct order. At first I did dismiss it as formulaic and I also found the whole romance between Marinette and Adrien / Lady Bug and Cat Noir kinda basic and iffy, but the more I watched the more I grew to appreciate the show, especially the way character traits shape the villains' powers and the clever problem solving in defeating them. Despite the repetitive transformation scenes it's not like Power Rangers where they always win with the exact same method, and the fight choreography is interesting and original.

If it was an anime I probably would have watched it by now but this is pretty convincing.
