Yeah but around age 8 you should take cat to vet once a year to check their kidney levels. That's already the age when kidney damage starts to show in many cats and catching it early helps keeping the cat healthy for much longer time.

@@chiwanau Can always set up DIY heated boxes. Many people in the north do it. Basically, you have a heating unit in a dog house type structure. People will keep them on their patio and set up cameras to see if the local strays end up finding them to use while the sun is down.

I used to be allergic to cats - asthma - but then I fell in love with a girl who had two cats. After a few months, where I had to use my asthma-spray all the time, the symptoms ceased, and today i have no allergic reactions at all, when I am with cats. Love seems to be able to cure allergies. I guess this is what happens to you too, Morgan. Who would not fall in love with these beautiful cats?

I love it! I have a similar story... I was definitely allergic to cats. But one day while shopping around yard sales, I fell in love with a kitten that one of the properties was rehoming. My husband was trying to talk me out of it because of my allergies. Within a year, my cat allergy completely ceased. That was 30 years ago and I have had cats ever since. 🥰

We have a tiny, 20yo cat at my stable who still hunts everyday. She catches mice, chipmunks, and baby squirrels. For the stable, retirement is only when the cat asks for it (hanging out in the viewing room more than going for hunts, no longer asking for outside time, etc. or when they’re injured and can’t be a barn cat anymore.)

Maybe the cats, Toby, the chickens/ducks/geese, the cows... each set can be featured on The Dodo, though it may bring more local attention than Morgan wants. Some planning with the town might help. Show people around the world scenes on the farm and in the friendly little town (that might like more tourists). "It's a good thing that city boy moved here!"

Pablo has quite a few more good years in him as a mouser. Once he gets to be about 15 he will likely have a harder time maintaining his body temperature and get a little slower. Uncle Ralph used to set up a chicken heat light for him in the barn but worried about leaving it on all night long. Soo, I made a cat cubby out of yarn with a pillow underneath to keep him toasty with his own body heat. We used to come in during the heavy winter mornings and Mickey would be in his cubby with only his nose sticking out. Super cute. The cat house you made for him above Toby is nice but in a few years it may help to get him a little cat cubby to help hold his own body heat.

My parents had a cat (gorgeous calico) show up and take over their barn. She HATED people but was a great hunter. Since my parents don't have any rodent issues, my dad caught her and brought her to my property. She doesn't go outside, but what she manages to accomplish inside our barn is incredible. Named her Koshka (if you know what that means, pretend its super original), and eventuallyshe became a true lovebug. In addition we adopted Mushka (a gorgeous dilute calico) about two years later. I too am allergic to cats but they make it worth the effort to suffer through it.

My cat is 15 years old and while she's an indoor cat she used to be a really good mouser for us until about a year ago when she started developing arthritis. She can still walk and run around with little difficulty but it's very apparent that she's having trouble climbing the stairs and jumping up on things. We had to move her litter box to the first floor so she didn't have to climb up the stairs to go. Arthritis and possibly kidney issues might be the biggest problems for Pablo in the future. A "retirement" area would be great for you cats once they get in their senior years. Maybe build an enclosed outdoor space connected to the house with a cat door. The Kitten Academy has a nice set up with pet doors that can be tuned to a cat's microchip or specific collars. That way you can let Pablo be outside a little but he can come back in the house without you having to monitor him. I know all this is probably like 5 years down the line but it's something to think about for the future.

My cat was born a barn cat, she's about 18 now and still a fierce killer if allowed....she's retired indoors and spends her days under a heat lamp, but if she has the opportunity, rodents stand no chance. It was only a couple years ago she killed 3 chipmunks in one day, in the catio (catios are highly suggested by the way)
@kevinbaker6168
@kevinbaker6168 2 жыл бұрын
The thing to think of for Pablo's retirement is will he be happy being a house cat? Outdoor cats often don't adapt well to being indoor cats. Even with old age they still crave being out and having adventures, even if it's just sleeping in a warm box in the barn, interrupted by a snack run or an occasional mousing hunt in the hay.

I can't tell if Toby protects his food more when Morgan is around, and then doesn't worry when he's by himself with the cats, and lets them eat. Or it's the other way around, and he acts real nice to the barn cats when Morgan is around, and is much tougher when he's by himself when he becomes the alpha who protects the farm.

@SadisticSenpai61
@SadisticSenpai61 2 жыл бұрын
@@billiejane3571 Dogs are pack animals. They're used to sharing and it's part of their instincts to share. They make sure everyone in the pack gets some food because having a starving pack member means a pack member that can't help hunt/work. So while Toby will make sure he eats his share of the food, he wants the other members of his pack (such as Pablo) to have some too. He wants to make sure they're eating okay. It's part of his instincts. I bet if Morgan were to feed Pablo at the same time and in the same area as Toby, Toby would be less inclined to share with Pablo. Cats often eat communally as well - they'll bring their kills to a communal area and eat there. It's safer for them that way (cats are very aware that they are both predator and prey). And sometimes a more dominant cat will steal the kill of a less dominant cat. Cats are a lot more social than most ppl think.

For a "retirement home" that your barn cats might adjust to easier, you might look into attaching an enclosed "catio" to your house. Pablo will certainly let you know when he's ready to transition into a retired indoor cat. It'll most likely be winter time when he'll start trying to come inside. I have one who was feral whom has over the last year and a half, become increasingly affectionate and is now staying inside more than out. I just have to convince his partner to do the same! Outdoor cats generally only live half as long as indoor cats, but you take very good care of your animals so I don't doubt his will be much longer as well. My only suggestion is to provide an insulated cat house, maybe with a chicken heater or heat lamp in the barn, so that he and the other cats can more easily maintain their body weight. Cats burn tons of calories keeping warm! My cats typically eat twice as much in b the winter months!

My cat is 8 and this year the vet told me she's officially a senior cat. This is when their bodies start to actually feel the effects of aging. They're more likely to start having issues with their teeth, joints, weight, eyes, hearing, etc. Those things aren't guaranteed to happen and many cats make it well into the mid teens, or even further, and stay perfectly healthy. But it really helps their chances of making it that far in that good of a condition if you start keeping an eye on their health and treating them appropriately to their age. And if Pablo starts having issues with being able to get around, or see, or hear, he's far less likely to make it to 20 living outside as a barn cat. So Morgan is doing the right thing, acknowledging that he's getting older and that it might not be best for his long-term health to always keep him outside

Pablo Barn Cat has the rule of the roost (or barn) and Ginny (Gin Gin) is such an affectionate and inquisitive dear heart. Together with Toby Dog, I love them to bits. Thank you so much for uploading this video!

I love the way Ginny barn cat just jumped right up on you as if you were best friends, Rides on your shoulders and then climbed down go check on something else and then pretty soon here she comes back and jumps right back up on your shoulders. She can move fast and cover more your age your footage or however you want to say it, with her camera… and that was quite the standoff between Toby and Molly? Over his food… By far, Ginny is MY FAVORITE cat, and I wanna thank you for showing the early footage of her as a baby kitten. It has been so fast watching her grow up it didn’t seem like that long ago when you brought her to the farm…She just is adorable and she has such great personality. Molly has not treated her very nice as a mother but maybe that so she could adjust to be independent on the farm which she has definitely become!! She is so whimsical and I love her personality; she’s a great “Camera-cat” & She takes the best pictures in front of a camera as well and I think she’s Toby’s best friend these days as well as yours Morgan’s. Thanks for the great video and, I to in fascinated with the life of Geese so, for me I’ll be saving this video forever♥️♥️❣️❣️

I think with Pablo, while it’s a nice thought to train him as an indoor cat in maybe 2 years, I think he has a good 2-4 years left outside or even more! and he would really enjoy these years as long as he doesn’t slow down too much physically which you can keep an eye on. I think he’s here to stay at this stage since he’s always around :D

My Pushkin is an indoor cat. She's into her 21st year and is still going strong, despite being a bit wobbly on her feet. I have only six chickens but still am getting eggs this winter. The problem with not taking the egg basket with me is when at least one of the eggs that I put into my pocket ends up getting smashed and a whole egg inside a barn coat pocket is a nasty mess.

Retirement for Pablo could look like outdoors during the day and indoors (doesn't have to be your house, could be a cat mansion) at night.

Cats can live 16- 20 years... some live longer, some not as long. Pablo is not old. I live with our cat, mostly indoors during the winter. I'm allergic to him 🙄 I pretty much never pet him, even though I love him dearly ❤️ I vacuum often, sneeze often, and my eyes are itchy. The warmer months are fine because he spends so much time outside... Love is sacrifice 😂

They can, but the average is 10 to 15 years. I have a cat that will be 14 next month, but she is indoors only because I live in an area with a lot of predators for cats, and I don't want her to end her life as food. Pablo is middle age, but he is correct on considering a retirement plan for Pablo. Doesn't need to be now, but it is good to have the plan in place beforehand.

You should build a house to all the future cats to retire in. It would be smarter and cheaper though, if you just build your allergic self a shed, and YOU move in there and let the cats and wifey enjoy the house! 🤣😂

My oldest cat was nearly 25 when he got sick and died. He was active his whole life. Our other cats has been between 17-22 and active nearly to the end. All of them could go in and out as they pleased, and everyone got food from the veterinarys foodsuply. So long as your barncats thrive and love it outside, let them do as they like. 8 years are not old for a cat.

*@Gold Shaw Farm* 3:11 Solution?* You can microchip Pablo, then get one of those electronic cat-doors installed in your house, so when Pablo becomes old, he get a "promotion" and can sleep inside at night, but still go outside & hunt as much & whenever he want (would be nice for Lily Barncat too, to get out sometimes). Then if something bad happens (eg. a fox or something) then at least he dies as a free cat while doing what HE WANT to do. "Is there any better way to die?" that's the most important question! Think of it like with the rest of the birds: "Pablo should only have to get ONE bad day".

I have an almost 19 year old cat. He has kidney failure but he is still eating good and being cuddly. So I think its still more life in him. He has been an inside cat for the last few years though, and I think thats why he is still alive. Traffic is the 1 thing that kills animals, at least here we live.
