@@tomscott3 I think it was more Perspective Space at place here. Because of the viewing angle it's difficult to determine just where the jet actually is, both in terms of closeness to us and actual position on runway. @@atlantic_love I think that's a factor, but a plane can technically "hover" in one spot thanks to how it stays airborne. He might have been. A comercial jet needs to be traveling ~130 mph relative to the air to gain altitude. Storm Dennis apparently had winds up to 115-120 mph. So if the plane was not moving (relative to the ground) and pointing into the wind it might have gotten enough lift to hover, or at least slow the decent a significant amount.

Not to mention the airframe. That's a lot of plane -- it's profile alone can act like a sail when on the ground. You can see how powerful the winds were on that landing just by how the horizontal stabilizers were flapping around when they got the plane on the ground. That be some badass skills.

@briane173
@briane173 2 жыл бұрын
@@cascade5682 Something I've always wondered: There are areas of the world, like at Heathrow, where crosswind landings in weather are an established thing on account of the fact that some airports -- even big ones -- don't have a cross-runway at a 90° angle to the prevailing runways, to be used for situations just like this one. I understand there can be obvious limits to the ground area needed to add a cross-runway at a large airport - topography being one of them. But if crosswind landings are a regular occurrence at int'l airports I'd be giving consideration to building a cross-runway for the occasional storm of this magnitude and wind direction. I live across from PDX, and it has two 28-10 runways that parallel the Columbia River; but it also has a 21-3 runway crossing the other two, which isn't as long but is built for the occasional stiff south-southeast wind that often accompanies storms coming in from the Pacific. Pilots at PDX almost _never_ have to deal with crosswind approaches and landings there because it has this cross-runway.
@TheFlyingZulu

Watch the rudder. On final approach, the pilot knows that with the plane still in the air and the enormous crosswind in play, he can't use it much yet. It would make the entire situation even less stable. As soon as he touches down, he stomps full right rudder. He knew that with the wheels on the ground, the plane could then pivot straight with less drama. And he's careful with it. He goes back to neutral rudder well before the pivot is complete so as to prevent over-correction. Then a quick stab of right rudder again to finish the job. I'm no pilot, but I'd also wager he momentarily went full throttle at that point as well so as to straighten the plane faster and with more authority. Soon as it was parallel to runway, or soon after, he'd then reduce throttle. A massively skilled captain. Kudos for his skills and instincts.

Even though it will be sideways going down the runway then the wheels will still be straight. An A380 so far as I know does not have that capability so for a pilot to land on the runway with the plane that crooked and do it safely? My guess is that the pilot in question is one heck of a pilot! Well done to the pilot that landed that plane safely!!!!

I don't know near as much about the civilian planes that I do the military planes as I've never worked on the civilian aircraft but I'm going to take a guess here on the B-52 as it has 4 main gear on it vs 2 main gear and a nose gear on most other planes so that makes it rather unique in that respect. To be honest, I'm not even sure other big military jets have crosswind crab built into them. I believe it is only on the B-52. I know for a fact that the KC-135 and the C-130 don't have crosswind crab on them. The civilian airliners may have some other kind of crosswind crab technology built into them but like I said I've never worked on them so I'm not sure at all about that.

Years ago I was in a small commuter prop plane. Maybe 9 passenger seats ? As we were coming in, gear down, the pilot’s door popped open and I could see out their front window. The amount of gyrations (up/down/left/right) I could see put a fatalistic fright into me but we touched down perfectly fine. What they do.

I'm sure the ATC told him the winds are worse in 10 minutes so you better land now! Thumbs up to pilot.

May have been on low fuel. This things fuel consumption on missed approaches is absolutely massive. Who knows if it was holding or had missed a few already

If you ask this captain, he will admit to you that he can fly better than he can walk. One of a kind!
