Just came back to watch this video today on July 20th. First video we ever recorded. Didn’t know anything about how to make videos. We were watching a small Picture in picture image and recording our screen with the KZbin PIP. Could barely see anything. Then it got blocked and the only way to make it live was to edit more and allow KZbin to mute some portions. We honestly expected 100 views at most! Check out some of our newer videos; we got much better on every single level.

Hi, I'm from Germany. Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before. PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄 Recommendation for a review: The band "Schwarzer Engel" and their song "Schwarze Sonne". Greetings Mega

@@ChemicalReactions I'm glad that my posting was helpful. I've edited my posting at several points. I added a 30 years war perspective to my thoughts about the eaten Germania on the table with the Sauerkraut & Sausages. "Industrial Metal" or only "Industrial" was invented by the band "Die Krupps" in the beginning of the 1980's. They are still around and they influenced many bands. Like "Oomph!" or "Eisbrecher", "KMFDM" or "Megaherz", for example. Therefore another recommendation from me: The band "Die Krupps" and their song "Paradise Now". Greetings Mega

Rammstein are the purest artists in music today. They do what they want, how they want and when they want and never apologise for it. To this day they have been together as an unchanged line-up from day one for over 25 years. They are as much an expressionist art collective as they are a band. But they also write incredibly simple, catchy songs.
@Norbert_Sattler5 жыл бұрын
Simple... and yet complex as well. Some have simple lyrics that are just simple fun. Some seem to be simple, but hide complex meanings. And some are just complex in structure and meaning. Unlike some other famous artists, they constantly change, evolve and try new things, while still keeping the core of their work similar enough to keep their original fans happy... it's a bit hard to put into words, but that's what makes them fascinating and rather timeless.

The black woman plays "Germania" the female form of Germany that is not real, just a fictive person.The laser is "the red thread" through the story!You have to watch the video at least 5 times to see all the details! Or did you see the airship "Hindenburg" explode ?? Just an example of many details in the video! Also look at the prisoners who have different badges on their prison uniforms. These badges show political and homosexuals as well as Jews. But you can only see that if you look carefully! And no it's not Ausschwitz but Travemünde where the V2 was developed.Actually, it's about "hate and love" which beat in a heart when it comes to German history. Again, chronologically, the video goes from the invasion of the Romans to the Middle Ages where the population was ripped off by dignitaries of the Christian representatives to the NAZI's and the people's representatives of the GDR. The terrorists of the RAF appear in the 70s, where Til the lieder singer of Rammstein plays a character in the red leather skirt, which at that time was also a dark side in West Germany. The RAF (Red Army Faction) was supported by the GDR with money and weapons as well as shelter. The fighter with the beard in his face played in Berlin in the 20's of the last century, when the class struggle of the different groups took place. Did you see the rats? Well, what comes to your mind? "Pied Piper of Hamelin" as a metaphor. How to catch people in the mind ???? Rammstein also expects the story with the video "Radio". My two Cents in: 1. The start of the singing is " Du hast viel geweint … " ( you have wept a lot ), when the Romans attack Germania. It represents the roman Revenge- Campaign under Nero Claudius Germanicus ( Father of later Emperor Caligula ), after seeing what Germania did to their comrades during and after the battle in the Teutoburg Forest ( 9AD ). 2. When the band- members are shown eating Germania, they are dressed as MONKS/ Clericals. 3. Shortly before the Scene of NAZIs Burning books, you see a Monk setting fire to burn a witch/ witcher in one of Rammstein´s stage- outfits. During the book- burning, said Monk is seen embracing one of the NAZIs... Nonetheless, dear ChemicalReactions!, i enjoyed your Video really much! As a german i might be able to explain some of the scenes in question. The beginning was referencing the infamous Varusbattle, where a bunch of usually divided germanic tribes lured Varus roman legions into an amush, whiped them out and stopped the roman expansion into middle europe. Due to the character of germany as a "late nation" and germanys federal nature, german nationalist, especially the Nazis under Hitler, attempted to idealize this moment in history as the founding of the german nation (when it actually most likely prevented it due to the lack of romanization which in other nations abolished most of the tribal cultures and cleared the path for the central national state). The feast scene most likely symbolizes how several different political parties and ideologies used the idea of germany as a national state to boost their own agenda. While the german state was founded very late compared to its neighbours by Otto von Bismarck, the idea of a german state wasn't that new. But noone knew how it actually should look, not even its borders were clear due to the state of austria - hungary. Should it be a monarchy? A democracy? Ultimately the attempt of a bottom up, democratic state founding failed in 1848 due to the still strong monarchs and lords (there were many!) and conservatives. It took a man like Otto von Bismarck and a lie to found germany from the top down. He lied, faked documents and got the several german feudal states to side with preussia against france. France was defeated completely and the resulting founding of germany on the corpses of french soldiers in Versailles poisoned the relation between the two nations until post WW2. Due to Bismarck being ultra conservative, the first (modern) german nation, the Deutsches Reich, was a monarchy and military state, and therefore in clear opposition to more modern nations as the USA, UK and the post war french republic. Conflict and war were innevitable due to the german economic and military power and arrogance. Only under Konrad Adenauer post WW2 the new federal republic of germany finaly joined the international community (and was accepted by them as equal, which it wasn't realy before WW2). However, all the bloody crimes in german history were commited in the name of germany, symbolized in the feast scene. But to fully understand Rammsteins video you have to know about germany as a late nation, the resulting hurt ego among german nationalists and how the real bad guys used this hurt ego (hidden under several layers of national pride) for their own agenda. In many ways politicians abuse this human tendency for overcompensation until today (for example in poland, another late nation)

This is really enhanced by even a rudimentary knowledge of German. Lyrics like: "Deutschland, mein Herz in Flammen; Will dich lieben und verdammen" - "Germany, my heart in flames; I want to love you, I want to curse you", or "Deutschland, dein Atem kalt; So jung, und doch so alt" - "Germany, your breath so cold; So young, and yet so old". or indeed "Deutschland, deine Liebe; Ist Fluch und Segen" - "Germany, your love; Is a curse and a blessing", and finally "Deutschland, meine Liebe; Kann ich dir nicht geben" - "Germany, my love; I cannot give you". These are all lyrics of men who don't seek to glorify the history of their nation. But rather understand it's dark moments, and accept them as such.

The portion of the video where you were talking about the men's mustaches is referring to the Weimar Republic which existed from about 1918 to 1933. The costumes depict the styles of clothing people wore during 1920's, so it's a little before WW2.

Rammstein fan since 1997!!! They've always pushed boundaries and been controversial, it leads to discussion. Germany government has tried to ban certain songs by them over the years. Their music is awesome. Easy to play, yet powerful. Love em, love em, love em. One of my favorite bands ever. This whole video is about the history of Germany since before it was Germany. They share the history of Die Mutterland, good and bad. The things they love and hate about it. Stars and scars.

Hey, I wanted to say something about Germania. Yes, she represents Germany, you could draw similarities with the statue of liberty. She has a long history and had many faces, reaching back to the romans, which assumed Germania was the goddess which protected the germans (which werent germans at the time because the country didnt exist yet) from the advancing romans. The germans took that over and made it an official figure. You can find many statues of her, sometimes holding a sword or another weapon, but nearly always the protective shield with the german eagle. I only know of one well known picture where she actually has neither a weapon nor a shield, but a book. The shield is drawn on her coat of arms though. Its a shame that she is nearly forgotten. I actually never learned about her in school and was able to overhear a conversation about "who that is supposed to be" in front of one of her pictures even though she is a figure longer than many others.

The actress represents "Gmernaia", which represents a personified german nation, like Marianne in france or Britannia in Britain. It goes even back to roman times, when Augustus coined that figure (a female) as a defeated person with the slogan "germania capta" (germany is defeated), even if there wasn't "a germany" back than, just germanic tribes just read on YT: "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable"

This caught me off guard - i am from Germany and have kind of a hate/love thing going on with Rammstein. They had some problematic texts in the past, so their music was difficult for me. This video was automatic played after watching you reacting to nightwish. I was very disturbed why youtube muted so much and also curious, because of the epic design of the video. I went to the original video and it's so amazing - all the references to german history, the outstanding production and of course really fabelous music. I couldn't comenting it on the Rammstein page, but I was soooo struck by this video, I had to write something somewhere. This might not be read by many people, because your reaction was from 7 month ago. I had to do it anyway. For your information: The woman, Ruby Commey, represents Germania (Deutschland), the country and people throughout History. 1) Germany east of the Rhine which the Romans called Magna Germania. Battle of Teutoburg Forest where the ''barbaric'' German tribes defeated the mighty Roman Empire under the leadership of Arminius (Hermann), now a venerated German hero. 2) Astronauts escorting a U-Boat. Trademark submarine of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) in both World Wars. 3) Boxing fight in Weimar Republic (1919-1939) an unstable and violent kind of democracy which preceded the Nazi regime. 4) Corpses in armor during the Crusades. The girl with the flag personifies Germany herself. 5) Members of the band marching in front of the ''Hindenburg Disaster'' a zeppelin which caught fire with 36 people being killed. 6) Members of the band in an office of the Stasi (Secret Police) in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). 7) The girl (Germany) walks 5 dogs. It shows the love and affection Germans always had for them. 8) Monks in a cellar walking with rats around them. A reference to the bubonic plague (Black Death) which devastated Europe in the Middle Ages. 9) The monks eating from the body of Germany symbolize the devouring of the ideal of nation throughout German history. 10) The people under the table are gagged and in latex. Germans may have BDSM tendencies. 11) Astronauts around the statues of the great Germans of the past. 12) Members of the band are in chains with money falling near them. A reference to the hyperinflation of the post WWI era. 13) The rocket refers to the infamous V2 rocket weapons which Hitler claimed would crush the Allies during WWII. 14) Execution of Jew captives in a concentration camp. 15) Lead singer's crossdressing with the rest of the band carrying weapons in wigs represents the Baader/Meinhof gang, a far-left terrorist group of the seventies in West Germany. 16) Burning of the witches in Middle Ages. 17) Burning of books from Nazi officers. 18) A frame depicts a monk and a Nazi hugging each other. We see the close connection between the church and the national socialist regime. 19) Germany giving birth to dogs. Huge allusion ain't got time for that sorry. 20) Tanks passing in front of a Karl Marx facade. Allusion to communism as a dictatorship. 21) People clashing with the police with molotov cocktails. Again depiction of the political turbulence. 22) At the end the girl (Germany) becomes an angel watching over the band (her people). From: Panayotis Haralabopoulos

Giving birth to dogs have 3 referrals here. 1. Flash back to Rome when times of Romul and Rem were dogs born and it was sign of fall of First time. 2. Show problem of immigrants -foreighners. Where migrants produced babys when native German have demografic problem. Also through the history germans tried to purify and now in day of tolerancy there not much pure germans left. 3. Like very rare breed of the dogs that was almost extinct. So there parallel here that works to ways.

The woman is most definitely Germania. The beginning is the Romans entering Germania, Teutoberg forest, When she in the knight armor she's Carolus Rex... Charlemagne The priests eating the corpse is the church taking everything for themselves, the prison scene is post WW1 and the humiliation from the treaty of Versailles and the atrocities of WW2 right after. "Deutschland Deutschland uber alles" (Germany above all) Is a particularly haunting lyric because the SS is the next scene.

PS: A little constructive criticism: Try to talk about details of the seen things in the interruption breaks or after the video. Because during some of the best parts of the song Chuck was talking about the things he noticed and was detracting from the reaction on this way during the some of the best parts of the music (where I wanted to see you react to). For example, when Till started to sing with his deep voice the first time during singing "Du hast viel geweint". When muting / editing the sound away...try not to edit your comments away, too. The best solution to such copyright claim threatened videos is: Mute the sound completely after counting to Zero for the audience. So the audience can watch the original video on a second screen and watch your reaction on the other screen. The counting to zero makes it possible, to start the original video on the other screen at the same time you are starting to listen and reacting to the video and music.

I think the whole meaning of the song (or at least the feeling of Rammstein towards Germany) is expressed in the end of the chorus "Deutschland, deine Liebe Ist Fluch und Segen Deutschland, meine Liebe Kann ich dir nicht geben" "Germany, your love is good and bad Germany, my love I can't give it to you" Is like a "I love my country, but so much shit went down that sometimes I hate it"
@funwithturtles68445 жыл бұрын
The meaning of the scenes has already been interpreted by megatwingo. One interesting aspect is the purpose of the song and I think i got an answer: Currently in Germany we are lacking some kind of "foundation of society". (We) Germans dont have universal values or some kind of framework to define "Germans". At least no real values, there is no "German Dream". This leads to conflicts in particular with increasing immigration. In my opinion this songs tries to lay the foundation what it means to be German.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3vQf4mufZxnidE This is a link to a lengthy analysis. To summarize, the song is about how modern Germans struggle to accept, in some cases even basic patriotism or national/cultural pride. The video is something of a highlight reel of gruesome events in their history that are attributed to previous periods of German nationalism, thus justifying the modern apprehension. Some of the events shown are from the Varusschlacht, periods from the Holy Roman Empire, the German Federation, the Interwar Period, Nazi Germany, and the RAF (Red Army Fraction). In all of the scenes, Germania is present as a leader, except with the RAF where she is being held hostage. Throughout, we see scientists examining halls of memorials from these various eras and come across Germania giving birth presumably to a new Germany, then being shot into space, while all of these eras clash violently.

Deutsch was more like a description, member of the people. Anyway, its hard to see the hints in the video, like the transition from burning witches by the chruch to burning books by the Nazis. The scene with the monks eating the actress I think is a representation of the wars of religion that plagued the Holy Roman Empire (not to be confused with the Roman Empire, confusing I know, the Holy Roman Empie was basically the region of modern-day Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and bits of Poland and Italy and was established about 600 years after the Roman Empire collapsed, in Rome at least) in general, and the Thirty Years War in particular.

Alternatively, it could be representative of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles that ended World War 1 when the western allies (Britain and France mostly) tore pieces off of the defeated Germany, crippled the German economy, and basically laid the groundwork for the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party.

Hey guys i am german and im impressed that your interpretations actually come pretty close if not on point to what the message should be. The Chorus translated is : Germany, my heart in flammes, wanna love and damn you, germany your breath is cold, so young but still so old. The most provocative line is germany germany above everyone wich scrates extremely close to germany germany above everthing , the first line of the national anthem's first verse that is illegal to sing including the second verse. Germans actually only sing the 3rd verse of the anthem nowadays. If you transalte the entire song you will find many extremly provocative topics adressed. It is worth noting that rammstein is expressing critisim, eventhough some people may or could percieve it as gloryfying. They have clearly said they have no sympathy with nazis and it hurts them being acused to be nazis, this is ridicoulous simply by the fact that they literallly took a african female actor as germania. Its sad to see that people arent intellegent enough anymore, to figure out these simple artisic expresseions and interpret then correctly. But you guys have nailed it down pretty much on point.

So people can move on. Powerful message. Unfortunately every country/culture has their skeletons in the closet. Americans with the Natives and slavery, Germans with the Nazi's, The Netherlands with ABC Islands, Suriname, South Africa and Indonesia. Owning up to history - though we all weren't there when it took place - makes people able to move on without misplaced guild and start set things wright. Hope we all can get to do that, make things wright and thereby better. Best wishes!

@@Laylee70z That is so true. We keep saying that it's by learning about our history that we avoid making the same mistakes. Yet, somehow we often make the same mistakes every few decades. To your list, I would add Canada's (our home country) treatment of aboriginal families, separating children from their families to send them to state-run schools, our refusal to welcome a ship of Jewish refugees in 1939, and many more. Memorial Day is coming up in the US (where we now live), a time to remember the sacrifice of our armed forces but also the context and historical significance of their efforts. Thank you for this great discussion!

@TheBlackiwid Yes, but that is only one of the lines. U hear all the lyrics, it says about the struggle to love ur country even though the wrong decisions it is making.

Interesting review. Like most Rammstein songs each song has many or at least a dualistic meaning. The song „du hast“ is interpreted by many as „You Hate“ but actually the whole line is „du hast mich gefragt und ich habe nichts gesagt „ really means you have asked me and I did not say anything „. The song Deutschland also has many meanings you guys touched on many of them. Thank you both!

Love the history commentary. You don't get that a lot in metal video reactions lol. Please, consider reacting to Sonne for your next Rammstein reaction.

I am so impressed with the intellect and knowledge of your daughter. As a father I say to you: Be proud.

In the end you can say that this song is describing the controversial love and hate relationship (hass-liebe) to germany as a citician. They literally sing I want to love and (at the same time) damn you (probably because it‘s their home country but on the other side you have all that bad history behind it).
