Watch Safari: Mongkok (Hong Kong) - April 18, 2023

Join me on a tour of a few secondhand watch shop in the bustling streets of Mongkok, on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. Lots to see!
Fx reminder for easy reference:
USD 1 = HKD 7.85
So for example:
HKD 100k = USD 12,738
USD 20k = HKD 157k
You can hope to find more unusual things here but still Rolex is the main draw. When searching you can see which dealer is trying to sell watches a bit faster and it's not easy in a market that is on a pullback after a bubble-like rise.
So it is a good time to buy? I'd be cautious given how much stock is available and don't forget where prices were just a few years back. It can all crumble a lot more while brands keep on pumping new models every year.
Personally I'm more comfortable buying rarer models, things that have intrinsic value rather than hype to support them. I also don't want to just own the same watches as hundreds of thousands of people.

That might be an AAAAA replica, but it doesnt even come close to the excellence of a Ziarex Swiss replica. You can spend less in China, but quality is worth the investment.

Well, Hong Kong used to be very competitive concerning prices for luxury watches in the 90's 'till the erarly 2000's. Usually approx. 25 - 35 % cheaper than in Europe. But that's all over for a long time already. Today, watches are definitely more expensive in HK than in Europe.

Thanks for the great video. I was ther last week and used your videos extensively. Was looking for an Air King. Came away slightly disappointed with the HK scene. Saw lots of watches but prices seemed a little on the high side (compared to Chrono24) and not a single dealer I visited would entertain any bargaining. Fun to see all the watches though.

Videos like this break my heart , my rolex AD rejects me so fast ( almost laughs me out of the store) as if paying $12K for a watch is no big deal. And then i see these stores are littered with all models and 2023 year models too. They would be surprised if you did not try to bargain and you'd be surprised how low they actually pay when people sell. I try to have a good number in my head that leaves everyone happy. They make a good margin, I get a better price. For example if something is 88,000, I'll offer 85k cash. Nothing crazy. But you can try to go 75k and see what they say, for esoteric brands and models, you can definitely target 20-25% less.

Not unless you buy HKD 2m worth of other things. Dealer prices for the 36 is about 120k, 41 is around 180k. Most Rolex still get hijacked here. The two-tone GMT is on nobody's wrist but still straight to secondhand market.

Yeah I see them and prices are coming off. The two-tones are pretty much at or maybe even below retail. Certainly no premium resale for sure. The white and black steels come back to reasonable levels but yeah, they're too chunky for most collectors here, so they've been treated more like bitcoins than actual watches to wear.

That's the lowest I've seen a redline Sea Dweller as well, if I was in Hong Kong I would pick it up immediately, they are still by and large unobtainable here in Los Angeles from the AD.

I’ve lived in Hong Kong and can tell you: I wouldn’t trust any of the shops showcased in this video. Reliable watch shops don’t display authentic luxury watches like we see in this video. This is old style retail watch shops. The watches are exhibited like bananas and apples at the wet market. Don’t trust this type of shops. They mix replicas and genuine ones. They rarely have boxes and papers as well.

Theres some insider information suggesting that Swissarex has access to the Rolex database and uses the same codes on their watches as the original ones. Because of this, its nearly impossible to distinguish them as fakes.

Buy in person to wear back on the plane yes. Shipping out, not really. You take the shipping risk, insurance amount is limited, customs always will be curious. If you really really insist on buying abroad to ship, then put all the value on the movement which you will have to describe in minute details on the shipping declaration. Case, crown and Banda are the most taxes. Do not ship alligator straps with the watch. Custom could confiscate just for that.
