The police have roped in mining and rescue experts to help haul to the resurface scores of illegal miners who have been holed up in an abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein.
This is the latest stanza in a tense stand-off between of a force of police officers and an undetermined number of "zama zamas" underground, who have yet to surface days after their supply lines - a network of openings spanning several disused mines - were cut by cops who filled in shafts. Mchunu's move, to execute a rescue instead of waiting for the men to surface, comes after Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshaveni earlier this week held that the government was going to “smoke out and persecute" illegal miners. #News24Video #News24
