The Europa Clipper mission is embarking on an in-depth exploration of Jupiter's moon, Europa, where conditions might support life. This spacecraft will journey 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion km) to arrive at Jupiter by April 2030. Once there, it will enter an orbit around Jupiter and perform 49 detailed flybys of Europa to study its potential for life.
NASA is launching this Discovery Class mission on SpaceX's Falcon Heavy. The rocket will be fully expended to unleash all the performance from Falcon Heavy necessary for a mission to Jupiter.

Is it a great time to be a fan of rockets. Space X is entertaining the heck out of us these days between Star Ship, Falcon Heavy, and Falcon launches. Thanks Everyday Astronaut for all the hard work you and the team are doing to put us in a great seat on this roller coaster of a ride!

Clipper probe weight is 13,000 pounds and even though Falcon Heavy is very capable, the probe has to be carefully crafted to minimize weight, be folded up to fit the nosecone, ETC. Imagine the capability of probes that won't have to make many compromises (if any) if they are placed on their trajectory by the Starship system with a payload capacity of over 200,000 pounds.

[54:52] Having the hardware ride back on the recovered center core would at least make the additional stuff symmetrical. They'd only be on one side of the side booster if attached the other direction, would make things a little trickier for them.

@AmbientMorality
@AmbientMorality 12 минут бұрын
We don't know of anywhere besides Earth with life, so finding life would be really fascinating: what's different about it? If it's on Europa, is it common for life to exist if the conditions are right? And even if there isn't life on Europa, then there is a ton we don't know about ocean worlds, and they seem incredibly common both in our solar system and likely everywhere, so learning about them is very neat.

It's just sad the radiation is so intense around Europa. It's not an environment we can visit in person - a reminder that space can be a very, very hostile environment! Personally, having a long involvement in genetic engineering, I am convinced that life on earth is not unique in our solar system, but it would be so exciting to have actual confirmation. However, if we are truly unique in the Milky Way, it behooves us to take better care of our planet, and better care of our species. We simply cannot ignore our responsibilities towards this gem of a world.
