When they sound the ships whistle they are passing through the Hood Canal Bridge. Great video! I was ANAV on the Michigan from 94 to 99. I'm long retired now but my time on the Michigan was one of the, if not the best tours of my 24 year career.

Our god damn supply officer loved mint jelly. AND HE WAS ONLY AN ENSIGN!!! From about half way night on that’s the only kind we had. After two patrols we bitched to the CO. The next patrol there wasn’t a jar of that s__t on board. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall during that conversation

Capt. Mark B. Keef served as the CO of Michigan's Gold Crew from November '89 - December '90. In the briefing he said that the crew were in port for about 3 months, so I believe that the documentary film was taken in 1990, perhaps the second patrol of him as CO.

I don't drink coffee, so of course everyone said that I made great coffee. When I went from the USS Argonaut to the USS Alexander Hamilton, I was so in awe at the size of the boat. They were the same length but the Hamilton was much larger in diameter and did not stink of diesel.
@onebridge7231

6 years isn’t a requirement. You choose your initial 4 or 6 years when you enlist. Usually a 6 year 1st entry is a 4 year with 2 year extension. I volunteered for BESS after MM A-school and only did 4 years in service. 3.4 years on my boat after almost 6 months of training including boot, A-school, and BESS.

This was the best time to serve. During peacetime (1980-2000). After Vietnam and before the “war on terror.” I’d much rather deploy to Scandinavia, Western Europe or Japan and Australia than Korea, Northern Africa and the Persian Gulf like they do nowadays. So glad I got out when I did and finished my reserve duty just months before 9/11.
