There are open source neural networks like YOLO that could easily figure out and sort by color ages ago. Really the only hard part of this would be getting the robot to grab the piece but I mean hard for a college student. If it was what you think it was they would have threw the Lego to the ground or even just at the edge of the table but they didn't and just put it back into the cameras field of view. You know why? The Tesla bot has made tremendous progress in just a few months. The reason is because Musk and his team understand A.I. and machine learning. Lots of companies can make a physical robot but then each little movement has to be pre-programmed. What makes this bot great is that it uses machine learning and Artificial Intelligence to do things autonomously and it is going to get better and better each and every month. I don't think anyone else is going to end up with a robot as good as this one will be. I think in perhaps 18 months it will be doing amazing things which will be useful in real world situations. From what I understand, even these actions in this video of being able to pick and sort things out and adjust to changes as it does are already actions that are of use in a number of factory situations.

Take note that this is not an "arm-only" robot. It's a humanesque robot. So as it's going through the sorting motions, it's moving its legs, then the hip joint, it's turning its torso. You can see why it's only using one hand, because computing for how the robot will balance itself as it's moving two arms independently is quite a challenge - but they're getting there.

So you think they are lying?? Why would they do that??. How would they maintain such a lie?? To maintain the sense of progress the future lies would be totally out of control. Only outright scammers like Nikola Motors do that. Tesla has far too much to lose from lying. So of course it's real.

@@user-pi1kn8dg2s i didn't say it IS CGI. but there where several cases in the past, where presented humanoid robots had some help that where not immediately disclosed in the video. Like Ameca, who actually had a human speaking in the background. but the way the tesla devs interacted on twitter, it's most likely exactly as presented. a little cheating on this one wouldn't send the stock down, it doesn't matter so much at this point. but i'm considering getting into Tesla after seing this. Humanoid robots, convincingly moving and acting, are another holy grail. and i think together with their AI prowess, they are very well, or even alone, in the race. Boston Dynamics probably has stopped laughing 🙂

Amazing progress! The potential applications are interesting to consider, though of course innovations like these need a clear analysis of the potential downsides as well. Perhaps these types of robots are best suited to high-risk jobs where dexterity is necessary. Guess we'll just have to wait and see at this point.

In farming the concept of pick and choose is always irreplaceable by autonomous robotic machines. While few of these things can perform monotonous work, they need a lot of crafting, maintenance and repair. Yes they will make few replacements but they will create new employments such as programming, robotics and mechanics. These are the first baby steps. Robotics needs company with humans and other robots.

This is really cool! I can imagine that if it is not tethered to a power source then as soon as the battery gets low, a notification will be sent to another robot that will come and take its place while the low battery robot goes to "take a break" and recharge its battery. That is really cool. Thinking even beyond just the factory, you could send a few of these into space and just send them out into infinity like Elon did the Tesla roadster a few years ago.... if that actually happened of course.... who knows... it could have been "green screened".... just a thought.

That's a bit faster and cleaner than the last clip I saw. I'd like to see a Tesla bot solve one of those fit-the-right-shape-in-the-right-hole toys that babies play with, put puzzles of increasing complexity together, solve a rubik's cube as fast as possible, etc. Give it some real human developmental tasks so we can easily see its capabilities on tasks. My guess is they would like to but it's still struggling with the baby toys.
