Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) is a modern woman on a quest to marvel at and travel the world while rediscovering and reconnecting with her true inner self in Eat Pray Love. At a crossroads after a divorce, Gilbert takes a year-long sabbatical from her job and steps uncharacteristically out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life. In her wondrous and exotic travels, she experiences the simple pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of love in Bali. Based on an inspiring true story, Eat Pray Love proves that there really is more than one way to let yourself go and see the world.

I don´t understand why are so many people against the fact that she was only thinking about herself. Isn´t there a time, only for a while, we should all think about us first? We should all search for what makes us happy, regardless others´ opinions. She hurt, she got hurt, that´s life. The movie was nice, Julia is always a brilliant actress and she was a big plus to the movie. The book, which I am reading right now, is ok too. Not excelent, not a favourite until now, but hope to read it till the end.

This film is great because it really shows that spirituality is true key to happiness, and the journey to self discover yourself and connecting with inner self is very important. The key to meditation is knowing how to calm the mind, not have constant thoughts. Traveling is the best as there are over 195 beautiful cultures on this earth and to learn from everyone from all different backgrounds and making friends from all cultures is great, that's the best part of being human I think, travelling does the open the eyes and mind more wider to see how everyone is living. Also its not about making lots of money, its what you do with money, giving to charity or helping out less fortunate people to make their dreams come true is also a way to achieve true inner happiness.

+Neelam Shah Care to explain how one could manage this level of self-indulgent travel and eating without spending a boatload of money on oneself? Not everyone can afford to take a year away from work and just travel around the world doing whatever the hell they want in the name of pseudo-spiritual "enlightenment", so how is anyone supposed to really learn anything from this movie?
@missnshah
@missnshah 9 жыл бұрын
+Mad Hatter Hi there, I do agree with your points above, of course not everyone can afford to travel, I understand completely, but what I meant was that not everything in life is about Money or neither does money bring true spiritual happiness, as you don't die with money, only your soul goes up, money in life gives you security and comforts I guess, but real true happiness is when you discover other cultures and beauty without thinking of yourself and doing good deeds for others and we can be happy and content with what we have. Also the message of the film also indicates meditation is good to still mind and not have too many thoughts or you loose yourself. :)

@0hn0haha
@0hn0haha 8 жыл бұрын
+Neelam Shah Why would I not want to have constant thoughts? I shudder to imagine that: not having thoughts... means you are dead, or sleeping. I hate sleeping, because it makes me miss out on too much time I could spend reading, eating, hiking, working, mowing the lawn, climbing mountains... living life. See, there are several types of people in this world. One type is the mass. They are society at large, and march to the beat of one drum. Another other is people like you, and people that try to live like this movie. They think that knowing themselves is key to happiness. They don't reject society, but think it is flawed, or searching. They think they will find themselves, connect with their inner self... but as much as they tell themselves their trips have truly changed them, or let them be free... but they too, march to the beat of one drum. It is not a different drum; society encourages them, thinks them it's heroes, and role models. Then there are those who reject society. They think it is flawed, beyond repair. Some of them try to find themselves, some are sociopaths, some just become cynics that end up joining the first category. They all, however, can only reject society because it exists. Their own existence as those who reject society would not happen if society was non-existent. They, then, march to the beat of society-at-large's drum, but without realizing it. By rejecting society, they are not being "themselves," though they think they may be; they are being a mirror opposite. They are also sometimes thought of as the "cool" ones, much like the second category. With these first three categories, people may inhabit more than one at a time, and be equally split between, or split unevenly. Either way, in the end, they all march, in essence, to the beat of one drum, though they may think they are all different. Then, the rarest category, are what we'll call the "true" rebels. They may sometimes think of themselves as such, other times, they enjoy what society has. But in some ways, they may reject, or dislike, society at large. They are not however a mix between any of the previous categories. The thing that sets them apart is that they don't care about their inner, or outer self. They are not "spiritual" at all, but are at the same time, the most spiritual. They may also, for this reason, consider themselves to be a part of society; but at the same time, they have nothing to do with it. It is almost as though they are spectres, phantoms, not riding any current but following what seems to be a path that they laid out. Sometimes, they may be a part of one or another category, but for them, it is much like what it feels like for a person who is somewhat afraid of, or, like most people, uncomfortable at heights to stand at the edge of a high cliff. It is doable, but does not feel natural. So, how are they really not part of the first three categories, or a mix of these? Because a fourth quality separates them out. The first category seeks acceptance within itself. So does the second. So does the third. These groups may even ostracize peoples completely outside of their supposed drum beat. The fourth group does not care for acceptance, and while it does not ostracize, it does not do so because it doesn't need to; the other 3 groups ostracize it. For the fourth group, it does not make sense that the first three discriminate among each other, as they are in fact all the same. And we all know at least one person from the fourth group. They are the ones that leave us with no excuse, the ones that seem to force others to search for acceptance, because they are content with themselves. They are the ones that are most often perfect... but not in an annoying way; and for that reason, they are never perfect, as we want to believe that perfection is achieved at great cost to ones inner self, leaving emptiness inside. They are ostracized because we know that they are in fact fulfilled, and living a full life. The truth has set them free. It's not about connecting to your inner self, which changes constantly. It's about having a higher, more ultimate purpose. That is the one thing the fourth group have in common.

For everyone who’s saying they can’t afford to travel in the comments, there are plenty of low cost ways to do so. You can volunteer, or teach, or find ways to budget for a year and then go. Look online there’s so many options and advice from people who’ve been in the same situation, yet found a way. The only thing limiting you, is you.

I think you're a bit envious :) and you reduce everything to... money. Sad. Read before saying such things and get informed ;) -> Wikipedia says "Eat, Pray, Love[edit] In 2006, Gilbert published Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia (Viking, 2006), a chronicle of her year of "spiritual and personal exploration" spent traveling abroad.[6] She financed her world travel for the book with a $200,000 publisher's advance after pitching the concept in a book proposal. The best-seller has been critiqued by some writers as "priv-lit"[7] and a "calculated business decision."[8]". Enjoy ! ;)

Meditation can be done in your room, a seaside mansion, a temple, a Buddhist lounge, a prison cell or a homeless shelter. Regardless of whether you have the chance to travel or not (I’m lucky enough to have been able to travel to Europe for just a month) you can begin this change anywhere. Change comes from within. There are free meditation retreats all over nearly every country in the world. I suggest you google a Goenka retreat near you, they house you, feed you, and instruct you for 10 days, completely free of charge (They exist from donations). We are all human beings trying to find happiness in this world. This trailer made me tear up a bit because it reminded me why I took my trip to Europe.

spoiler alert... Plot: Cheats on husband, eats spaghetti, declares herself God, pulls a white savior move in Bali, goes to an island to screw her new boy, then writes a book about it to rub it in everyones face (not least her heart broken ex), then takes credit for every bit of happiness that results in the people's lives she wrecked. The real title is 'Me, Myself, and I."

you forgot gives herself a UTI from excessive overabundance of sex and celebrates doctor telling her to have even more sex despite diagnosis of a bad UTI (from the book)... I was like is he the worst doctor ever or what??? For medical reasons she has to stop having all that sex... and both her and the doctor probably celebrated hedonism until she contracts a bunch of STDs and dies. Im really surprised she is still alive... but Jesus is merciful. Gotta pray for this lost soul...

You only have one life so what is it to live it solely for yourself. Everyone is shouting "oh its a white woman's problem", but it just shows why this movie was made. The people that say this are endlessly working for others and this movie just shows that at some point you should live it for yourself. You get only 100 years on this earth. It is not insanity to live one year for solely yourself. Take a breather. While this movie is exaggerated, it just shows how many people reject the idea of loving yourself rather than money or your family. I'm in no situation to do the same as the character portrayed in this movie, but I hope to do so in whatever future I have left. 1/100 years is not that much time to truly appreciate yourself and white women should not be the only ones that love themselves enough to give themselves a year. It's hard not to live your life for money, but when you are dead money is valueless.

I'm surprised more people haven't noticed that this movie and the book it's based on is a total rip-off of the 1989 British film Shirley Valentine. The author of the book should have to pay royalties. Just another book about a bored, selfish, entitled woman with no real problems.

This movie is a dream being sold to women. You want the reality? Go on tick tock and see how these "Happy" divorced women in their thirties and forties are faring lol it's movies and media like this that have contributed to marriage rates going down, divorces going up and being initiated by women, and women having children and raising them in the absence of a father. Men are checking out at an alarming rate, and some even going overseas to find women who HAVEN'T been sold this very same dream and are willing to put family and children above all 🤷

I think the people complaining that she had money to travel before writing are missing the point. The message is not about money. It's not about traveling. Its not about divorce. It's how blocking that inner spiritual force inside that is YOU (the one that may lead you to spend all your money to travel, or leave your husband, or even write a book) can leave you unhappy and unsatisfied no matter the situations in your life.

I have mixed feelings about this book and movie now. You watch it and I think everyone can relate in terms of trying to find their purpose in life. The movie ends making you think she figured it out- well as best as she could. In life you’re always growing and changing. Years later she divorces him for a woman. A friend of hers who has been in her life way before she went on this journey of self discovery. I’m not judging. To each his own. Everyone should do what makes them happy, but I wonder if that’s why she needed the trip to begin with. She wasn’t being totally honest with herself in which case I feel like she sold me a lie. This movie makes you want to travel the world and her answer was really deep within. She didn’t need trips to 3 countries to validate that for her. I’m just wondering. Not that I’m judging.
@Engji
@Engji 2 жыл бұрын
Darling, there is no ulterior purpose or ulterior destination in life. The author never claimed that after her 1-year spiritual experience her life would be perfect. She never sold a lie. The book and the movie only show a small fragment of her life, which is ever-evolving. Things change, people change, so it makes sense that if she felt that the relationship with Felipe wasn't serving her anymore, she quit it and went on to her next adventure. Also, she wouldn't have learned that the answer was deep within, if she hadn't travelled to the 3 countries. That's the whole point.

I always sidestepped around Eat, Pray, Love being condescending and thinking that it would be some middle aged white woman ranting about Christianity and how she "found god". When I pushed my arrogance aside and finally sat down to read after multiple friends recommended it to me, what I found was a truly inspiring, beautiful book. I may be an atheist, but I myself found joy, comedy, and wisdom in the memoir even still. A definite read and I can't wait to watch the film.

@DrFlox well, if you put it that way, i can't say you're wrong. However, i do think the more important message of this book/movie (which is applicable on both men and women) is to be ready for change, to hold onto yourself when change happens, to allow yourself to believe in love, in the beauty of the world and in the people/things around you. I guess it just took Liz an expensive "ego-trip" to realize this wonderful message.
