So glad I found this. I have four red leghorns that will be three years old this fall. I bought them from a local chicken dude when they were almost one year, so they’ve been together all their lives. Ive read where their lifespan is four to six years. I feel the need now to pick up a couple of younger birds now to start a new generation of layers. Kind of morbid to think this way.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
Those are great chickens! Their egg production may slow down at those ages so commercial farms would consider them spent. But we have had birds still alive and laying at 10 years old. Not that many eggs, so you may want a new generation of layers anyways, but they really have the lifespan of small dogs!

Do you quarantine incoming pullets or hens first before putting them in close quarters with the rest of them just seperated by a kennel or a fence? Or would you suggest that in the winter? As i am rescuing three pullets around the same age as my other satins and silkies and i don't know whether i should keep these three new ones completely separated for a couple weeks.

Just came across your vid, excellent info. Question for you if I may… the coop I have is a raised 5’x5’x6’ tall with a 12’ enclosed run. They have a 200sq’ free range area which will be expanded to around 2000sq’ this spring. My 7 layers are 1 year old now and only go in the coop to sleep. The rest of the time they are out in they’re area. I’m getting 4 new 22 week old layers early June. I can separate the 4 new from the 7 existing but only during the day. They’ll all need to be in the coop at night. How would you handle this if you were in my shoes? Thanks for your opinion.

I have my younger flocks run right up against my older flocks run so they can see each other and get used to each other through the chicken wire. I was wondering if this same advice holds true if there are young roosters in the new comers and one older rooster in my old flock? If they aren't showing signs of aggression through the fence..and my older rooster seems unfazed by these new chickens..do you think the older rooster will accept them? I'm hoping it goes well..I'm introducing 25 pullets and 3 roos to my older rooster and 2 older hens. They are going on 3 months old.

Can you fake out a hen into thinking it just hatched out chicks? We have two hens that stay in the nesting box desperately trying to hatch out a chick even though we don’t have a rooster. If we put two small chicks in with each hen could they be fooled or will blood bath ensue?

This is a really helpful video, thank you. I have a question. We have inherited a 5 year old chicken who was the last of her flock and had nowhere to go, we have 3 existing 1 year olds. We have had the new chicken in an area next to the main run with a wire fence. This has been 3 weeks now and 2 sit well with her but another will come out and cause issues. Today after weeks of relative harmony and even perching very close through the wire they all tried to go at her. Have you successfully integrated 1 chick to a small flock at all? I might be overreacting as you say it's harder for the owners lol
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks we are glad to be of help, that’s great you’re giving her a home as they are flock animals and shouldn’t be alone. But ideally it is much easier to integrate more than one bird at a time, it distributes the pecking order around so one chicken isn’t getting the sole torment from the others. It’s harder but can still be done. We do what you are doing but maybe just do monitored free play when you’re home. Start letting them mingle for larger portions of the day giving more freedom. If all else fails I would cage the bully for a few days instead of the newbie. Also be sure she has somewhere to jump high to “hide from the bully” the new girl will usually like to sit high out of her way. I would hang a cabbage to distract as well. The dominant hen will want to spend her day defending it. Hope this helps further, sometimes the pecking order resolved itself the next day and you were stressed thinking it could last forever and then it’s over before you know it. Good luck ❤️

Do you have a video of how to make the pop up pin that you just showed? That’s so cool bc my husband has been bringing lumber home and this looks like something easy that I can build. We have individual coops due to having more roosters than hens so we are trying to think of single carrier boxes to build so that if there is a hurricane we can bring them all inside or something lol we haven’t quite figured out that sitchy yet and scary to think bc hurricane season is among us at peak! Yikes lol any advice? I have a feeling I’ll be commenting on a lot and get a lot of knowledge from one bird momma to another ❤️ I hope I’m not bugging lol I just love my new flock of game fowls and my hens, even though they can be intimidating a little I cannot help but to learn as much as I can to make myself the best bird momma I can be lol. Of course not you are a great bird momma! We do have an older video that should be in our playlist on raising chicks or our diy one. We want to make a new updated video soon on the ones we have been building lately. It’s just been so hot or windy here it’s made filming outside very hard to do lol. Taking them inside for a Hurricane would be ideal! I know that’s not possible for everyone depending on your flock size or space inside. Chickens do not like wind or getting wet, we don’t have hurricanes in California so it’s hard for me to say what I would do but good luck!

Such great material. I love that you explained the baby brain in pullets! I have a question: I heard hay was number one in crop impactions?
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Well, hay (alfalfa) is actually healthy treat for chickens. Ours love scratching and picking at our goat’s & horse’s. Straw (dead yellow dry stuff) is bad if consumed as it doesn’t break down well and can cause crop impaction. The good thing is that chickens do not usually consume it, they see it as bedding and is rare occurrence if they try to eat it. Anything large can cause impacted crop like long blade grass. When a chicken eats grass growing on the ground they rip and tear off tiny bite sized pieces to be consumed. If you give them long blade grass clippings they can’t rip and tear a small bite and can just swallow the long blades whole. I hope the way I have explained this makes sense and was of help

It may be. Just monitor them. Try to add them while the older ones are sleeping. Be prepared to take them to their own tote of it first work out. If it doesn’t it should work when they are 7 days and 11 days for sure. Once the 3 days get more strength to them you can definitely mix them

They do still have to boss them around a bit and establish the pecking order. As long as no one gets bloodied let them do it. Just observe it can seem more stressful to us than it is. If you can pinpoint who the main bully is, lock her up while the others figure it out and then release her. If someone gets hurt and you there is any blood separate them immediately until they are fully healed and try again. Make sure you have multiple feeders and waterers out at this time so this bully’s don’t not allow them to eat or drink

I'm desperate at this time. I've done all everyone has said. I tried and tried to introduce a new chicken and the all team up on her and get on top of her. I got some babies, I put her with them in the run separately had her in there for months till the babies got big enough. Slowly tried to let them all together. They just peck at the babies but her.. the totaly attack and multiple get in top of her at a time. She hunches down and takes the horrible abuse.. then runs into there box and hides the rest of the day. I literally habe to get her and feed and give her water and food. They all have multiple feeding stations. She's loosing weight idk what to do anymore. I don't have just one or 2 jumping on her it's like 5 or more at a time. She's so sweet I don't want to lose her... I'm at what's end... someone please help..

@apexiumim2741 I thought this with one other chicken before. The litterly had her skin open to where you saw the vains pumping the blood. But once she healed and we re introduced her she was excepted. It seems to me they go after the "top dog(hen)" when we tried to introduce her by herself.. she was the only hen... when we put her with the babies she was the mother hen.. so since they went after her so much she didn't eat and was loosing weight ( like the other one) we've had her since September. And at this point she's in her own space gaining her weight back.. I'm afraid she's so sweet she's going to be a lower... idk. I love her so much.

I've been introducing 3 juvenile black Australorps (1 cockerel, 2 pullets, two of them hatched Sept 26th and the other Oct 7th) to my 3 "older" girls (hatched June 26th this year). These were all eggs I've bought and incubated myself. Babies are all hand reared and very tame. The older three have been in an outdoors area protected by electric poultry netting, with an "Eglu Cube" house and night time run since early October. I started off introducing the two groups by housing the younger Australorps in a portable enclosure I'd made OUTSIDE the elec fence, but close to it, so both groups could see each other. After about 10 days I put the Australorps' portable enclosure INSIDE the elec fence so the two groups could REALLY get up close. Too close for one Australorp unfortunately - one of the older hens managed to get a beak full of Penny's feathers through the bars of her enclosure and hung on long enough to tear a piece of Penny's scalp off 😥 She survived and I learned that I need to put chicken wire around my portable pen structure so no beaks can get through!) Anyhow, about 10 days passed and I decided to let the Australorps out into the main area. Well, turned out all THREE of my older girls are bullies! It's taken another two weeks of supervision, rescues, distractions and caging of the three bullies from time to time for there to be (only just now) an uneasy truce between them all. I think the turning point came when I picked up the young Australorps and put them in the roosting area of the Eglu Cube one day. They must have liked it, as not long afterwards, they started putting themselves to bed BEFORE the older chooks did. They endured quite a few pecks and growlings (judging by the commotion we were listening to each night), but held their ground. They had previously been getting taken out of the elec fenced area each night and housed indoors. They still run whenever Rowdy, Buffy or Bluey charge at them, but not so far away and not so fast now - and the bullying charges are getting less frequent. The older hens are still being right little tarts over sharing food, but I have several feeders and waterers spread throughout the yard, so they can't guard everything at once 🤣. I mean to say, talk about fun police! They used to chase the younguns out of the dust bathing areas too, but not any more. I've got two younger Polish babies ( hatched Oct 29th) as well as a couple of Silver Wyandotte eggs (due to hatch out Dec 17th) yet to integrate with the others. I'm really hoping it won't take so long! 🤣 They are such characters, I love them to bits - to the extent I'm constantly photographing and videoing them at their various life stages and forcing my long suffering friends and family to look at them 🤣 It's a sickness! Lol.

If they are both new to the location an introduction through the fence may not be necessary because they are both new and there’s no territory to defend. Usually after 2 weeks of meeting through the fence there will be no conflict after release. After 2 months they should be ready to live together as one flock

I think the tips here are great, however our silkies escaping to a perch is damn near out of the question (also the silkie rooster is stupidly aggressive). 3 months hurt to hear but we've tried the first day today. One is a lot smaller cause he got really sick in the beginning but he is great now but he is being targeted pretty hard. Good video I just need to build another coop and a very large run that's completely separate. The one I think is the top hen doesn't attack anyone but she is larger and takes the lead everywhere.we had the new flock in their run and coop for about 2.5 weeks and hoped we could try.

I released the chicken in the field directly with the old chickens, but within 15 days it was always a victim of stalking, then they became priorities for respect among themselves, now I am trying to present a young chicken, I think it is a little late
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
They take time to establish their pecking order. The social hierarchy in chickens is very complex. They have to find their place in it but introducing through a fence let’s them get a head start on that with the safety of not being attacked. It’s easier to introduce a group of new chickens together as it disperses the bullying around and not all just on one chicken. As long as she doesn’t get hurt and they don’t make her bleed she will be okay. If she bleeds she needs to be separated until fully healed or else they will cannibalize the wound

This was very helpful! I bought 10 baby chicks in the spring and ended up with 7 roosters. Hilarious, right? I found a nice old vet in the country who took 6 of them for us, sold them and bought us 3 little hens. How sweet of him! We didn't know he was going to buy some for us. So we built a fenced off section in the run, bought an old end table/cabinet at Goodwill to close the little ones in at night for safety and have been trying to integrate the young ones. One was sick for a few days and is the dumb one and so they pick on her. I think I also tried to put them together a little too early. Wish I found this video sooner but all is well now and they're doing fine. Thanks again!!

Glad to hear it all ended up good! It takes some time, sometimes separating the sick one will help them get better faster with less stress, but they can also get picked on again once reintroduced from their absence. Lol last year we got 16 chicks and 9 ended up roosters! We’ve been there 😂

Thanks for this. Wonderful video. I'm going to be introducing chicks. I thought feeding chicks needed to eat grower feed, and not layer feed. I thought the calcium was bad for them before they start laying. Thanks!!
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right it is recommended that you do not put them on layer feed until they are laying eggs. It is best if you have a mixed flock of older layers and new chicks to have the entire flock on grower freed. Just have oyster shell and calcium supplement available free choice. They will do just fine like this and do not technically need to be on layer feed if the oyster shell is available to them. Black soldier fly larvae is another great treat with plenty of calcium. Thanks for watching!

@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
Yes this is exactly what we do. If the weather is good we keep the injured chicken in a hospital pen inside the coop. Sometimes we keep them inside our home but in most cases we put a spare pen in the actual coop and then release them once healed. If the flock still sees them they do not lose their place in the pecking order

@@BloomAlbumProv1128 just keep going slowly. Keep her in the pen safe but in view of the others. They may still try to get her once you release but keep her safe in the pen for 2 weeks and the drama between them should be minimal. Only separate her if you think they will strike blood. I wish you had a video about respiratory issues!!! I have some La200, but dont know if I should take other precautions before jumping to that !!
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 3 жыл бұрын
We want to make one soon. What are the symptoms? In most cases it’s better to be aggressive and treat immediately with respiratory issues so it doesn’t get worse and have beat chance of recovery. Most respiratory diseases they will be carriers for life but it should only spur up in times of stress. Also wild birds sharing waterers can be carriers and spread the disease. They need to be moved inside in hospital pen to releave stress from pecking order and temperature swings. Make sure they are eating and drinking, syringe water if needed and give them anything they’ll eat like scrambled egg or watermelon if no appetite. Keep them alive and they will make full recovery and you could see little to no signs of disease. Tylan 50 or LA 200 works best injectable intramuscular

@BockBockBouquet

Yes but should not take that long. Have a fence between them for a couple weeks and then release them and monitor for any bully’s. The 2 month olds will be much larger and could inforce their pecking order. Or they could be passive and accept them quickly. Personalities of chickens can vary, they could be integrated rather quickly

Hi! It will take some time, you did nothing wrong. They have to establish their pecking order and unfortunately there’s no way around that. It can be stressful for us to watch them, but unless they draw blood then there’s no need to intervene and separate as it’s a natural process. They have to figure out who’s in charge. It should end after a few weeks. Stay strong! Lol

Any tips for 2 roosters that just absolutely hate each other? They are both great roosters separately but once together they fight and fight and fight. I've tried everything to no avail.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
How long have they been together? Unfortunately they have to figure it out and let them fight until one backs down as submissive. This can be hard to watch, only intervene if one gets hurt or it looks like you have to stop it. Just like people all have their own personalities and with hormones sometimes unfortunately it may just not work out. If it’s really bad I would look into finding one of them a new home. Maybe when you raise chicks again and get a new rooster, he would get along better with the old rooster as he would grow up submissive to the dominant old man and wouldn’t challenge him. The old rooster would see no threat in a young baby rooster and leave him alone as well

Does it matter if it is different breed of chicken. Interested in introducing silkies with Easter eggers. They look so much different so I was not sure if this would make it more difficult.
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
No it doesn’t matter, we have a very mixed flock and have never noticed chickens picking on another based off looks. They like things that stand out like a scab or injury, or new quill feathers poking out from a molt. Things like that you need to worry for bullying. The only concern is with crested breeds is if they can’t see well, they can’t defend themselves. If your silkies are heavily crested, I would give a little haircut around their eyes to see better before introduction to give them an upper hand.

Is this any different when Roosters live in the flock?
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 3 жыл бұрын
We have many roosters and find success in using this same form of introduction at a young age. If the young cockerel grows up next to the dominant rooster they will not fight as who is in charge is very clear. Same with bantam rooster along side large heave breed of rooster. We find they will not fight and peacefully coexist as submissive roosters to the dominant rooster. If you introduce two similar sized rooster they will have to fight and duke it out to establish who is the dominant rooster on top of the pecking order. Unfortunately until they figure this out and establish it there is no way to stop them

@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 жыл бұрын
Hello I would start training them to roost, if you could just make something real quick, doesn’t even need to be much since it’s a temporary accommodation correct? They’ll have a chicken coop to live in shortly? I would even just slip a bar, sticks, bamboo, 1x2 wood in through the gaps in the fencing to just have a little bar to jump up on. And make sure they have shade during the day and are draft free, you can use a tarp or plywood or anything really. They don’t need housing really since temporary, just protection from elements

Aw they can be very scared and then panicking actually makes the flock want to attack them more. We don’t let them mingle until we are fully ready after some time behind the fence to fully release them and start the integration. We try to do it on a day off work where we can moniter if any fights break out. We find that if they spend a lot of time behind the fence the older hens and roosters are so used to them that there pecking order is usually established and there are only fights if a baby challenges an older flock member
