7:45 It is really interesting how you describe the chorus because you hit on something that a lot of people don't know. In old plays (like Shakespeare's) there would be moments when the action stopped. Then the Chorus (either a single actor, or a group of actors) would step forward and comment on the action. This tradition goes back, I believe, to old Greek plays and tragedies. From this outline, we've developed a structure to modern music where the "action" of the verses will stop and the chorus comes in to make a point, saying "Here's what happened." or "Here's the big picture."

you're clipping like crazy when you're tracking-- try recording at a lower level, so your recordings don't distort when you sing loudly. ;) Thanks for making this, really cool to see others' process!
@DanPurcell
@DanPurcell 7 жыл бұрын
Colin Adams the reason for the clipping is my mic is irreparably broken, I’ve had it since high school and I didn’t know about proper microphone care until like...sophomore year of college lol. I’ve definitely been planning on saving up to get a new one soon 😂

@@DanPurcell Bro are you sure about that? Thr problem might actually be your recording technique. Look at the Db levels on the left going in the reds a lot.

This is actually so useful. I struggle to arrange for my youtube, I really wanted to start A Capella, but sheets are so expensive. Thank you

@@DanPurcell As a follow up to this. Using this method I just finished an arrangement of Ain't No Sunshine. Honestly I think arranging by ear is easier for me, even though I am trained with sheet music

So I’m using my earphone to record on my iPad and I have to sit in AC(otherwise it’s too hot for me). This sometimes doesn’t give me the best audio possible(the background noise). How do I get rid of it and make my audio sound better?

How do you make the tempo line up with the MP3 of the original track. I normally arrange with Sibelius and sing along with the track to make the parts, and now I want to get instant feedback of the human voice through a Daw like this, but I can never get the tempo and track to match.
@DanPurcell
@DanPurcell 6 жыл бұрын
Bassaholic1221 great question! I first look up the song tempo online by typing in the song’s name and bpm, then set up my session based on that. Following, I’ll generally eyeball where the track starts in the session based on the down beat of a drum or tempo at the beginning of the song and line it up to Beat marker 2 so I have an extra 4 bar count in just in case!
@DanPurcell
@DanPurcell 6 жыл бұрын
I’ll then build the arrangement up from there, starting with bass / perc

Thank you for the quick reply! I get that part, the thing is though if I use the metronome throughout the song, it gradually gets off beat, even with the tempo provided online. Is there a way to sync the tempo from the MP3 in GarageBand like in Pro Tools? (That tends to get off tempo too sometimes)

But how are you clicking and recording so quickly🤦🏾‍♀️ while you’re getting the background music together ugh I wish you were in my face to help me how are you hearing what you recorded while you record . What I’m trying to do is make my background music first then sing over it but I don’t know how to loop all the layers I make
@DanPurcell

oh those are edits i made to speed up the video haha -- the full video of me doing this was like... 40mins long i'm making separate tracks for each vocal, so every vocal is on its own individual track -- there also should be an option in garageband for you to loop whatever section you're playing once you've finished!

@@DanPurcell but my question I can make the single layer but how will I loop all the layers I make together to play at the same time for the whole song

Respectfully - quite an inaccurate title. I don't really see any arrangement tips besides what order you're doing things in. You yadayadaed over the actual interesting part - "I dunno, I just think of how I want it to sound and sometimes it comes right out in a few minutes and sometimes it takes a lot longer." Followed by tiny clips of you just trying different things. Great. That's the part I clicked on this hoping to find out more about.... THAT thought process. The actual arranging. Not the producing....
@DanPurcell
@DanPurcell 7 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Totally understand your thought process behind why you might have found this video disappointing. That's something I'm trying to figure out for videos in the future, should I choose to continue this series -- how much of it should be the actual documenting of me discovering the ideas versus me espousing the reasons *why* I do what I do. A lot of it goes hand in hand, especially because I have barely any formal music theory training. Additionally, I'm the only one doing the entire video, from me recording what I'm tracking to the edit, so sometimes I get lost in the edit and stuff that people may have found interesting gets left on the cutting room floor. I really should have another pair of eyes handle the footage and cut it down, but alas, I do not have the money to pay an editor hahaha Here's hoping I can refine it with future installments though! Your feedback is much appreciated.

Yeah. It would've been nice to see ANYTHING about trimming, editing, lining up vocal tracks precisely, etc., in case your vocals are slightly off timing wise. That's why I clicked this. Oh well. KZbin is a vast world. Onto the next.
