Just had a guy tear off my 30 old deck and build new with the Camo screws. Love the way it looks without the screws showing. He never worked with the screws before and liked the finished look. I had him picture frame around the deck so the edges would not be seen, but I did not let him screw the center boards down because I wanted to sand the edges and make sure they were laying the correct way to avoid the cupping and splintering you talked about here and other videos. Something contractors don't figure for that kind of detail in their quote so I didn't want to pay him extra to do that. I used 20 foot pressure treated for a 20 foot deck. Not the easiest thing to handle ut it looks great. Although I do want to replace some boards that have too many deep knots or have separation that you talked about Thanks for the additional information!

I like the way you use your speed square as a spacer for the deck boards. I've always made my spacers from some 2" x 6" drop pieces and drive some nails through them. The nail is the spacer and the 2" x 6" piece keeps it from falling through the gap. The width of the space depends on the nail size. I usually use a 10d or 16d but I've sometimes even used 20d.

I watched this deck build in addition to the one day deck build, but I need some help with what kind of deck I should build considering my area. I live in the California mountains with hard ground that's terrible for digging (going to use deck cement blocks, instead of digging as much as possible). The area I'm building the deck is on a gradual slope, gets a lot of sun, and given the high winds and snow, I know it's going to take a beating. Given this information, would building a deck directly on the highest part of the ground and lifting it where the slope begins until it's level, work? In case it matters- I don't mind if it's not the most beautiful deck, I just want it to be functional and last through the snowy winters.

Am I missing something? Definitely intrigued by the camo system but is it just one screw per 16 inches that holds the board down? No top screws? Nothing in the other side? I was assuming at least 2 screws per joist to hold the deck board down, not just one on the side.

Question for Jeff. I am renovating my bathroom in my 100 year old house. When I took off the old tile off the floor I discovered the original beautiful porcelain hex shaped tile that with some TLC I think I can restore it to look like it was put in yesterday. The floor also had these thick porcelain curved baseboards around the perimeter of the bathroom floor. I had to take those out because they were in bad shape. When I took out the porcelain baseboard I discover there was something that looks like a roughly 3 inch cement or maybe mortar sub floor poured on the floor. In removing the baseboard some the crumbling baseboard came out and I need to fill it in, however some of the area has a bit of exposed wood. I know its not a good idea to pour cement over wood so I am looking for the best solution to level this gap around the perimeter of my bathroom so I can get it up to level ? really appreciate your video any advice would be appreciated.

Question for Jeff or anyone who has used the camo system on PT wood. My soon to be built deck is on the south side, is my main entrance, will suffer -35 in winter to +35 in summer. I believe he mentioned why he was only using the tape on the wider spans on the ends (where he was doing his perpendicular portrait deck boards) in his box beaming video. IIRC he only did it in spots where there was a possibility of water pooling under the wood, and for most of the framing, there are only 1.5" wide spans facing upwards, where pooling shouldn't be an issue.

@ThePlockets

According to Highland Woodworking, flat sawn wood can cup either way, depending largely on how dry it is at installation time, relative to it's environment. Generally, construction lumber is softwood and not yet fully dried out, and tends to cup opposite the bark side (in the same direction as the rings) as it loses moisture. Hardwoods are generally dried out for longer, and thus may cup towards the bark side (opposite the direction of the rings) if it takes in moisture due to it being drier than it's environment. That said, if you live in a wetter climate, it could be that construction lumber tends to be drier than the environment, and would more generally cup towards the bark side, opposite the direction of the rings.
