For me, one important question is, "Do I want the clothing piece or the body of the model?" As much as I want to be a body-positive queen, that's the reality when I see clothing on tall skinny people.

This!!! Also, sometimes initially I will not like a trend because I simply don't like it or because I know it won't be flattering on my body type, but after seeing it on so many beautiful people you convince yourself that you like it and you're going to like it on yourself too.

OMG😲. Simple, but brilliant question to ponder before purchase. 🌠 Think I've spent a lifetime wishing🤣 I was a taller, natural, athletic, rectangle w/endless legs for days ↕️. As an hourglass ⏳️ w/extreme proportions & the exaggerated torso〰️NO amount of dieting will give me that same slim silhouette. Nor will I 🪄 magically look like these beauties in the exact same outfit🥺. It feels so unfair. Everyone says my figure shape is most ideal, but I've found it tricky😔 to style & find things that FIT me in both personality & proportions. When you dress to flatter this shape〰️i.e., ➡️reduce⬅️ excess fabric bulk around the middle that simply makes this shape seem ↔️ obese no matter our size, or wear any sort of ⬇️ lower/deeper/wider neckline to visually minimize the "girls"〰️it can come across as rather shockingly va-va-voom😵. Something that's definitely NOT my cup of tea🍵. It's hard to find role models in this category that suit my 👧girl next door persona caught in this 🤦‍♀️saloon showgirl style body. 🕊God bless the voluptuous Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Kim K, Pamela Anderson, & Dolly Parton. Femme fatale types who flamboyantly own their exuberant sensuality in such an overt manner. This requires demonstratable strong will, self-esteem, & unequivocal confidence to beat back the unwanted attention it draws from men🐺 or women😼. 🤫That's something no longer for me. My show 🤩boating 🚢 ship has sailed ⛵️, but that doesn't mean I want to slink away in shame. 😉Still finding it seriously challenging to feel powerful & joyful while balancing this lush femininity w/a more introverted, contemplative nature. All I can conclude is trying to comprehend my ever emerging style has been quite a journey of self discovery... involving decades of expression, examination, & experimentation. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

1. For designer items: would I still like this if it was made by an inexpensive, high street brand? Or does the fact that it's a designer/'good brand' make me want it? 2. For basics or cheaper items: Am I only buying this because it's a good deal, or would I actually be willing to pay more for this because I like it that much?

I think this was a great follow up video to your last one! It’s nice to see “de-influencing” content sometimes as opposed to “here’s what you should be buying.” I would love to see you do another “solving your fashion dilemmas” video or a video of you creating outfits based on your followers’ theme suggestions! I always love rewatching those videos of yours. Edited to add that you shouldn’t feel pressure to not do thrift with me or thrifting trends videos! I still enjoy those videos even if I’m trying to be sustainable too. You can’t single handedly save the world by being the most sustainable person. Easier said than done, but don’t let the pressure of people saying you’re not being sustainable enough get to you. You’re doing a great job just by showing that thrifting is a viable option! Plus you’ve definitely descaled your content back from lots of hauls. You’re doing a great job Alexa!

I wish they made more clothes that are practical and cute. I'm still searching for a none see through white shirt or cropped shirt 😂🤣 I just need it for a basic, I just dont want to show my tatas 😂 I'd love to gain confidence to wear like a backless dress or top, I suffered bad back acne and acne has been a big insecurity of mine, its improved so much but backless things scare me ever since. But I think backless dresses are stunning, i just struggle with feeling pretty or being girly which is so annoying to me.

I also ask myself, “Where (or for what occasion) will I wear this?” OR “Does this fit my lifestyle?” I wear a uniform to work and don’t go out a lot, so while I love smart, polished looks, realistically I spend the bulk of my time in my uniform or my bum around at home clothes, so I only need so many items.

This is such a good rule to live by. I haven’t had that much money to spend on clothes recently which has made me a lot more strict with what I can justify purchasing. Therefore I’ve only been buying good quality pieces I absolutely love and know I will wear a ton. If I like something, but already have something similar or can diy it out of something I own I won’t buy it. I instead prioritize things I need and don’t already have. If I can’t easily style it in more than one or two ways it’s not worth buying. It has actually led me to be happier and more content with my wardrobe. I never feel like I don’t have anything to wear because I love the clothes I have and always have something I can style them with. Owning and buying less clothes actually caused me to discover my personal style whereas before I used to impulse buy everything I thought looked cute without thinking about wether it was really me and I often felt like I was almost cosplaying someone else because of it. Who would have thought that buying myself less new clothes would be the key to discovering my personal style? I definitely didn’t.

Same here! I really think hmmm is this piece of clothing going to be something that I love wearing in my everyday life? Or is this going to go with other pieces? As much as I love some of the pieces from social media, it’s really not practical to wear some outfits in our everyday to day lives. Most of us are “normal” people and do not have the time and money to live and dress like influencers. Don’t give in to overconsumption :))

I’ve made a resolution this year to only buy 1 or at most 2 items of clothing every month. That makes it easier for me to know if I really love something and I can maybe splurge a little and buy from more sustainable brands when I actually do buy something. Also realising that if something sells out or I miss out on an item it’s not the end of the world. Like my life isn’t gonna end because I couldn’t get a hold of a specific pair of pants.

last year, I saw this gorgeous pair of knee high boots in store at the start of my school term - and I told myself I'd wait to get it. I ended up thinking abt it all 3 months of the sch term and bought it right after the semester ended! HAHA now I've worn them countless times and they're definitely a staple in my wardrobe - my friends all know me for my knee high boots haha. waiting is definitely a good way to know if you want something or not (although I will admit i have been a little guilty of not waiting with recent purchases and I'm already feeling myself beginning to regret some pieces a little :') )

YES, such an important video! I think even thrift stores are encouraging overconsumption. Today I bought 2 skirts that I liked for 11 bucks for both. Do I have enough skirts? Yes. Did I buy them because they were cute and I liked them and they were cheap by high quality? Yes. Will I get enough wear our of them before winter is over? I'm not sure. It's a vicious cycle that is so hard to break, even if you don't buy anything new and thrift your whole wardrobe.

When you live long enough to see the same things come in style and then go out of style 4-5 times in your lifetime, by then you kinda know if you like it or not. So when the trends are announced each season I can just go down the list and say "Yes, I liked it the last 5 times it was trendy and I probably still own it from the last 2 cycles, and I've BEEN wearing it this whole time even when it was "out", or I say "Nope. Not for me. NEXT!" Trends for me are just an opportunity to wear things I always liked and now the rest of the world likes it too, at least for 15 minutes. When the world gets tired of it, I will be there to scoop up their thrift donations.

My questions: Does it work with the pieces in my wardrobe? Do I need it? I think knowing your personal style (& getting older) helps. I don't buy "trends". I thrift items I love and some of the items will end up touching on a trend. I love preppy styles so trends like dark academia, sweater vests, oversized blazers all are part of my personal style. I also like functional so cargo pants and puffer vests are part of my wardrobe 🤷 which touched on trends.

A question that I ask myself, especially thrifting, is “Is it a good quality piece or brand that I can resell if it doesn’t work out for me personally?” That way I can potentially pass it on to someone who it will work better for instead of just donating it and also make part of my money back.

A tip I have before buying something is: is it diy-able? Diy-ing my clothes is something I used to do all the time a couple years ago and want to start doing it again. Like I remember back in I think it was 2018 I saw a lot of embroidered denim and one design in particular that I liked at the time was flame print, but I couldn’t really find it in stores anywhere at a reasonable price so I ended up taking a pair of jeans I already owned that I was bored with and embroidered them myself. I was really happy with the outcome and it was much cheaper since I already owned the jeans. If you are able to knit, crochet, sew, paint etc. the piece you want I absolutely recommend it. It makes the piece more special and personal and no one is going to have the exact same thing as you. Currently I’ve been wanting more printed baby tees/tank tops, but haven’t really found any prints I like at a reasonable price, but I have so many basic baby tees and tank tops that I don’t wear enough because I find them too boring and plain, but I know I could easily up-cycle them by buying those papers you can print designs on and iron onto clothes(I forget what they’re called, but I hope this makes sense). Like if you really want something, but can’t find it or it’s too expensive or something then make it yourself or up-cycle something you already have. Or you could even thrift something you can up-cycle if you want. It will feel so rewarding to know that you made it yourself so nobody else will have an exact replica.

I like knowing what the trends are, and they can be very inspiring, but I do agree with you that they need to be just that, inspiring. I am older, so I have to be more selective. I was a teenager in the late 70s. I think 60s and 70s styles are beginning to trend and will grow. I think many people will be happy with that. The clothes were fantastic! I sooo agree on the being specific!! It does apply not only to clothes but any item. It's so easy to buy a similar piece because of a sale maybe, it being easier to get etc. But it might then not fulfill the want and you won't use it or still buy the other item. The right colour, material, texture and fit might be quite important to why you wanted something

The method that works the best for me is to see if I find myself missing a certain piece of clothing/ colour when I'm getting dressed. Eg: I have 2 denim jackets that serve different purposes and it makes sense to have them both. BUT I have been missing a black denim jacket SO many times, everytime I thought that I wrote it down so I knew it wasn't a one time thing and that I would genuinely wear it. Also, I have a look over my wardrobe every 6 months (even though I barely buy clothes) and I turn my hangers around so that in the next 6 months I can see if I wore it and if I didn't I donate it. It's also made me wear so many bits I have BC I saw the hanger was still turned and wore to give it some love.

I really appreciate the mindfulness of channels like yours that talk about clothes when they stop the hauls and the trend predictions to ask what is it about clothes in the first place that brings us to consume this content. I can think of instances where I’ve liked something for the idea of how it looks or the aesthetic of it vs the times when is has taken me a while to incorporate something in my stuff and it expanding on a way I express myself, when this last one happens is like discovering a new thing about me. Like I used to hate the low rise trend in 2020, mostly the jeans, when I saw them styled in Pinterest with only a crop top and thought there’s no way 1 I would look good and 2 that it could fit my daily activities. After seeing it in different “aesthetics” I realized that I didn’t have to be fit or bone skinny to look good on it and that it actually flattered my body type. After all this just last year I thrifted a pair and it’s been great, I like the idea being able to change the way I consume to be a lot more slow and conscious.

Also, being 14 at the time, i didn’t have the money to get them on my own and didn’t want to ask my parents for them. So, I’ve gotten 3 different, cheaper versions of the Jadon Doc Martens, and for the past like year, Ive just stuck with the Steve Madden Betty Black Booties and I’ll just say that I still yearn for the Doc Martens. Here’s a couple of video ideas, but no pressure: It would be cool to see you do anti-haul videos where you mention trends that you aren’t buying either because they don’t work for you or because you have something that works for the trend already. If you have a workable piece, it would be cool to see it in the video as well. Or a video discussing trends you love the look of but don’t intend to buy for 2023. Also interesting would be videos discussing which trends from predictions that you actually end up seeing, and if you’re seeing them online or in person.

I feel like you should make these questions into a sheet or graphic. I'm not likely to rewatch the video everytime I'm thinking about purchasing things, but going through the questions on a graphic is something I'd do.

I think it would be interesting for you to look into kibbe body types( I’m not saying everyone has to dress for their body type)! It might help with your fashion struggles( such as the pleated skirt).

same here !! i find myself liking pieces AFTER they’ve had their peak & i don’t care if people care i’m “ late to the trend “ or whatever . i think it comes from when i younger , by the time i’d ask my parents for something it would already be “ out of style “ / not the exact piece everyone was wearing . it made me have an appreciation for modifiying trends to fit ur own personal style !

One thing I do to be more mindful when I shop is that I have to be able to style an item 3 different ways with things I already own before I pull the trigger and buy it.

I have learned to not get rid of *most* clothes. If I loved it once, I will love it again. So many things I have gotten rid of only to want years later. Right now i am missing a long Grey cargo skirt from the later 90's. My only consolation is that it wouldn't fit anymore. Still, it was a great skirt.

My approach to fashion trends now is 1 Is it comfortable enough to wear, 2 is it easy to style 3 would I wear it if it wasn't fashionable or expensive. 4 Is it worth the price. I also love to get pieces and styles that I wanna try from my friends, relatives, thrift stores... To not waste much money on stuff that I don't know if I would like.

I have many of the same rules as the other people in the comments. Here's one question I ask myself when I'm in a dressing room trying something on: "Does this look as good or maybe even better on me than the clothes I wore to the store today?" If not, then I don't buy it because I'd probably use it much less than the clothes I already have.

Waiting to see if you actually like a certain trend or clothing item can be so annoying (because of the waiting) but so rewarding when you can look back on it later and actually decide if you want it or not. Or need it or not too, aka do you just want it because everyone has it

A comment Tim Gunn said in an early season of Project Runway has always stuck with me. He said “you’ve been in the monkey house too long” Meaning when you first go into the monkey house at the zoo, you say “wow! This really stinks”. After awhile you get used to it and it doesn’t stink so much. The truth is it still stinks. And fashion is the same, what stunk at first still stinks. I also think when we first hate something, it's because we're programmed to not like 'different' things. We end up liking them when it feels like a safer option. I'm not saying this is for everyone, but in general I always think your first response to something is dictated by society, then after a bit we understand how we really feel about it!
