Replaced front rotors pads and bearings, changed out all the blown speakers. I bought a new 2000 F150 XLT Supercab 5.4L 4WD. I drove it 105,000 miles in 5 years and sold it to a friend. The right rear axle seal leaked at about 80k miles and the limited slip diff was shuddering on turns. An axle seal that cost about $8 fixed the leak and changing the diff fluid fixed the shudder. That was it in 105K miles. Later I bought a used 2002 F150 Supercab Lariat FX4 5.4L in 2009 that had 69k miles on it. It now has 171,000 miles on it. The right rear axle and bearing and front end (tie rod ends, ball joints, bearing hubs etc) were replaced. More recently the blend door actuator failed and I replaced the plugs for the second time along with the coils this time. The only time it failed to start was repaired with a new PCM relay that cost about $8. No leaks and it runs great. The only modification to it is a Superchips 1715 87 octane tune which perked it up considerably. No plug blowout, egr, IAC, or blend door failure on either truck. Oh yeah, the rear suicide doors were repaired because the cable ends failed on the latch mechanism. I bought aluminum cable ends for cheap and repaired them. Most reliable vehicles I've ever owned and I've owned a bunch in my 79 years.

Mine is a 2000 f150 4.2 v6 267k miles, motor never opened up rear diff serviced once at 150k. No abnormal noises. The slave cylinder is a common problem above 180k in the manuals, and its a pain to fix. And radiator mounts won't hold up in the salt belt
@HAL-dm1eh Жыл бұрын
Mine did the oil leak down the side of the block before it finally blew at about 247K miles. It happened, though apparently not that common. I researched the cause and never really got a straight answer from the internet, but it looks like maybe some heads just got a little less torque than they should have at the factory and it finally gave way eventually.
@HAL-dm1eh Жыл бұрын
Also, your 4.2 is the post 98 V6 which didn't have much of a problem with the head gaskets but 98 down were guaranteed to blow. Ford remedied the situation by using MLS gaskets, which they used from the start on the mod motors.

Great tip -thanks. On Expeditions, it's easier to adapt or make a shirt, low profile ratchet for the required 7 mm socket (hex-bit) that has 50% of hex shaft cut off. This low-profile ratchet lets you to get to and remove a rear screw on these actuators that is usually hard to get to, but not with the special tool. This procedure is much easier than removing the dash. For access to the rear blend door actuators, just remove the cup holders and the tray from the interior trim over the rear wheels, and enjoy using these access holes. Use the same 7 mm tool to remove any hard to get to screws on the actuators without removing the large rear trim pieces the manuals suggest. Using the described method, the blend door actuators can be removed and replaced in just a few minutes.

I had a 1999 F-150 with the 5.4L in it!! I bought the truck for $500 and had to replace the gas tank and the tires on it! No big deal because it was a "beater" and even though the frame was rock solid, and the engine ran well and strong, I wasn't too upset by this! The body was pretty rusted when I got the truck and I was only using it as a "work vehicle" so it wasn't "my pride and joy"!! Like I say I replaced THOSE parts and drove it for nearly 4 years!! Not bad for a $500 truck!! I decided it was "good truck" and decided to show it some "love"!! The truck after all (like I already said) ran great!! SO back in March of 2020 I decided to address other problems it had like rust, and began to install other parts on it! I gave it almost a completely new set of brake lines, all the way around. It got a new battery, new spare tire, and four new doors (used) doors. I even put on a set of new shocks as well as a new stereo system! I even replaced the headlights as one of the lens were broken, even though it still worked and looked "OK"! I even did some work on the exhaust installing a bunch of new pipe and a muffler! Then one day, in October of 2020, after I had dumped $1500 into it, I was walking around my yard and heard a strange sound coming from it!! Mind you the key was in my pocket and when I opened the door the heater fan was ON and was on the "high setting" even though the key was in my pocket and the switch itself for the heater was set to low!!! I shut the fan off, which shouldn't have been on without the key anyhow to begin with. And figured maybe the switch was bad! A couple hours later I went to start the truck and the new battery was completely dead!! I disconnected the battery and charged it. BUT when I installed the battery back into it, it kept giving me a "theft error" and wouldn't start at all!! I popped the relay in and out of it, and replaced that too and I still got the same error message and no start!! I sold the truck for just $400 a couple days later!! I figure I don't need a vehicle with those kinds of electrical issues!!! Only thing that burns me up is I spent $1500 to make it a "better truck" only to have it fail when I needed it the most!!

My 2001 4.2L F150's worst rust was loss of radiator core support, any buyer of a used model must learn how to inspect for this issue. I noticed it in 2012. Mechanic's estimate for this repair was $1700, most of that was for labor. Sheet metal cost was $110, plus same amount for shipping. I fixed it myself in back yard winter of 2012-3. I took many shortcuts and trips to junk yard to "practice" new skills on junked F-150s with rusted out radiator core supports, there were so many of them. Didn't reweld anything, fastened drilled out spot welds with nuts, bolts & epoxy. 9 years later, chunks of rust keep falling off, but my radiator is at least secure!

I bought a 98 Expedition with 240K miles on it a few years ago and restored it to almost brand new doing very little to it. I got compliments on it from whoever saw it and they said it was "mint". The original engine and transmission required fluid changing and tune up to get running great again, but that was it. I did take apart the dash because I was afraid the heater core was leaking but it turns out it wasn't, it was the AC water running out the weep holes. But hey I got to put a new heater core in there while I was in there, and learned the dash isn't so hard to take apart. Everything you said on here is true, and I unfortunately sold mine at around I think 247K miles because the head gaskets that were leaking oil down the side of the block finally gave way between the coolant and combustion chamber. I couldn't fix it myself because the heads are so big they go under the body a bit and it may require lifting the body off the frame to get to a bolt. Looking back though, I still regret selling that vehicle. What I should have done was just park it covered until I could get the money to fix it.

Betsy!! She is a 03 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6L SuperCrew with a 5.5 Styleside bed with custom 18” 2014 Ford Expedition wheels. I bought her with 252k on OD back in 2020. First problems I had with her was coolant leak at heater core hose connectors (plastic quick disconnects) and P0171 / P0174 Lean codes bank 1 and 2. Fixed these problems but still had one emission code I can’t remember what it was. I also tuned her up with new OEM MC plugs. Then 10k miles later Fuel pump decided it had enough while looking for a vehicle for my wife at the dealership. She had to be towed and I repaired with a new fuel pump/sender unit and notice a 4 inch EVAP. hose deteriorating. Always replaced it and guess what finally clear? The other EVAP code! At 289k in 2023 the OG alternator finally went out. Replaced it with a new along with a new battery. Then the last repair I have done was May 2023 at 290k was the timing chain repair with new intake manifold gaskets both upper and lower. Increased her fuel economy from 12 mpg city to 17 mpg city. Coming next at 300k is another tune up and differential oil with possible replacing transmission with a freshly rebuilt a 4R60W!

You did a very good job of explaining the issues with the F-150. Although I would have to disagree with the noisy differential being wiped out! I have owned a 1999 F-150 4X4 and I currently own a 2000 F-150 4x4! And I learned a lot about these trucks. And I will share them with you and your posse! 🤠 if the rear differential makes clunking noises when going around a corner, you might want to check and make sure that the guy before you had it didn't get jiffy lubed and the wrong fluids were installed! If it has GL-5 80-90 weight or anything besides 75-140 limited slip, it will make all kinds of crazy noises! And if it is making a popping noise when you eccelerate from a dead stop its the yoke not being able to slide back and forth because almost every man who has ever gotten his hands on a pickup truck has got to lift it at least 2 inches! But never thinks about weather he altered the pinion angle which needs to be set at seven degrees negative! Because the pinion gear will climb up the ring gear seven degrees when under eccelaration load and will straiten the angle of the driveshaft and the pinion snub when set correctly! And when they neglect to do so it causes binding between the needle bearings and the trunion of the universal joint knocking it out of phase and wearing shit out in a hurry! 😉

ive got mine still bought it for 1000 bucks it has over 340 000 kms on it and the same diff, trans, and engine. it has the 4.2 which is a pushrod style engine but it does not matter weather its the 4.2, 4.6 or 5.4 2 valve they all last a long time. the gearing on my rear end is i think 3.07? i deffinitley know its not some 4.11 or the best for towing thats for sure BUT if you think about having weaker gears in your diff and not having as great acceleration and towing THATS A GOOD THING because your whole drive train doesnt get worked as hard and last longer from the engine to the diff. i had to replace an alternator, power steering pump, power steering pressure line and basic stuff like tires and brakes thats going to go out other than that im keeping this truck. its basic and they last longer than the newer junk on the market by far. also with the weaker gearing in my diff no joke on the highway i get 25 MPG metric so in imperial or by canadian standards thats about 28 MPG.... for a truck with over 200k miles thats good.

In February I bought a 4.6 F150 "Heritage Edition" black and gold with close to 127,000 miles on it. It was made in 03 but sold for 04 (Yeah its interesting and weird). Sure it has some rust but not terrible, I did have a misfire but that was because the spark plug wasn't installed correctly, I still replaced all of them because I was going to anyway. Its a great truck, sure the looks and safety aren't the best, but they aren't terrible. With the right mods these trucks look good, and the likelihood of you getting killed in a wreck depends on a huge variety of factors, the number one thing you should do is buckle up. That polyester strap saves lives. I bought this on a budget and its my first truck, I would recommend this for first timers or people who just need something to take the garbage out. Just be aware of the problems and you'll be fine.

2000 Model 5.4L triton V8, HD rear and tranny with 353,000. I have to replace coil packs for one or two cylinders once or twice a year sometimes. it uses oil pretty good. One bad flaw, the Engine Manifold has plastic gasket made onto it, its a part of it, so the entire thing needs replaced if and when it cracks it screws it up, and causes it to stall out at lights and turns and won't idle until hot. So if that is a problem you are experiencing, and they have no clue, have them check that. Several Mechs missed that, went to one and in describing it, He knew exactly what it was. I looked it up online, sure enough, folks were having that same issue with that part, same symptoms. Buying the entire piece is expensive. I had to do that at 300,000 or so almost $700 to get it fixed. Door locks work but power windows don't. All panel readouts not analogue quit working except the odometer, it comes and goes. when it rains, the engine electrical system is effected, and it misses. But, all in all it has been a good truck. its old, and tired, but still keeps ticking. It is now my farm truck, used as a spare.

I just recently replaced the entire clutch system because the slave cylinder went out. Figured if I'm doing it I might as well do it all since its an internal (its located inside the bell housing). So I did the master cylinder, slave cylinder, plate, flywheel and throw-out bearing. Also replaced the oil pan gasket, rear main seal and front diff seal at the same time. Total cost including parts was $1500. Its a reliable truck. But like any machine, it just needs to be maintained properly.
