Hey Josh, I'm not sure if anyone has pointed out. But do pay attention to the polar pattern of any mics before purchasing and see if it fits to your needs. The Video Mic Go has a supercardioid pattern, which picks up sound from the front and back of the mic whereas the VideoMicro has a cardioid pattern which picks up only at the front! So it depends on what kind of focal length u plan to shoot and if u want to sacrifice distance with sounds coming from the back!

I got one to do in-studio recording. I had a little panic when I saw this video title, but wind is not an issue where I'm recording. I may end up getting a new mic down the road, but for my channel, which I'm just starting, it's sounding like I didn't make a terrible choice with the Videomic Go.

Josh, I, like many others rely on KZbin reviews to help with informed purchases. I am so glad I found this video for several reasons. First of all, your information was perfect, clearly demonstrating in action and not by just reading specs or using in-studio tests. Second, though it was a bit long - you were very entertaining and made the review totally enjoyable. I'm not sure where I'd edit anything out, as this was well worth repeated watchings. Thanks for helping to educate us!

Interesting. I've just bought one of these go's and I haven't experienced the problem you are talking about YET but your video was useful to be mindful of it before it's too late so to speak. My problem is the led isn't working on the back, with either the 750d or the 6d. Hey Josh, we share the same great name :) Useful video, recently got the videomic go in a camera package with the Panasonic G85 (yes..i've switched from Canon to M4/3) so now i have to sell some great Canon gear but i noticed the Rangers Tripod your carrying and wanted to know your thoughts on it. It's a bit short for me at 5' 11'' and i don't really care for the center column or the plastic tightening holsters in the columns that i think are prone to breakage (recently got on lightning deal and am debating returning). How long have you been using it and what are thoughts on it? How has it held up under abuse? Thanks!
@JoshWiniarski
@JoshWiniarski 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Josh, you have an incredible name! So I've been using my Ranger's tripod since September (just over 5 months to be exact) and have definitely gotten a fair amount of use out of it in that time. It is a shorter tripod. In fact it's sort of awkwardly short because if they made it just a bit taller people could use it without hunching over, but it's not short enough to be marketed as a dedicated "compact tripod." That being said, I'm a huge fan of the flip-locks so far. Yes they are plastic but they are really quick to setup! I was using a friend's tripod last weekend and it had the metal twist-locks and man that thing was a pain to setup and take down. Every adjustment probably took 3 times as long (granted we're talking in the seconds so maybe setup time would be 45-60 seconds instead of 15-20 but coming from the flip locks it was annoying). That being said, the ranger tripod is a good height for most instances and i love how small it folds up. I wouldn't use it for portraits because a lot of people will be taller than it and you'll end up looking up their nose, but really no complaints. Going on 6 months without any physical issues at all so for the price I'm happy. I don't baby any of my gear, but that being said I'm not trying to break it either. I expect to be using it at least for another 18 months or so. If you want to see what I mean with the flip locks, just undo all 3 on each leg with a good smack, pull them down, and lock them. Then go up to the body twist locks and twist them, adjust them, and twist them back and imagine having to do that 3 times per leg. Especially if I'm making a video (for example this one I would bike, set it up, take a timelapse or short clip, and then pack it up and move locatons) I wanna be fast! Hope this helps, I could have just made a whole video instead of writing this novel haha!

Hi Josh, I saw on a video sometime ago that a person resolved this problem by adding another dead cat (which had extra) to the back of the microphone and it stopped the wind from getting to the back of the microphone. Maybe just adding a fussy material to the back might help. Thanks for making this video. It helped a lot with deciding which microphone to buy.

Sorry to hear that, unfortunately it's tough to say what the problem is. I would try it out on as many devices as possible (for instance if you have family or friends with other types of phones) to try to narrow down what the problem is. I've never used a shotgun mic with my phone, but I did a quick search and it sounds like you have the right adapter. Is it the licensed rode adapter? Is there any chance you could try the mic on a camera? You can always get the iphone specific mic, but if you get the micro to work then you can use it on a camera as well if you ever upgrade. Wish I could be of more help, hope you find a solution!

I can fully confirm that’s actually the owner of Rode lol, we emailed back and fourth about the issue with my video mic go and forwarded my email to his CEO about sending me an updated version of it, excellent customer service to their creators.

Yeah, I try to actually use products before making videos on them, vs. just take them out of a box and act like I've "put them to the test." Usability testing in the environments you'll use gear is the most important thing imo. It's totally possible this issue has been resolved, but this mic failed ME on multiple occasions when shooting outdoors and if you search the issue up you can quickly discover it's a common issue. Rode Videomicro is undoubtedly a better microphone overall.

Bought this mic around a month ago without doing some research because I'm a dumbass. While contacting the customer service, I already bought the Boya BM2021 because I going on holiday with my family and doing some vlog that weekend. After around 1-2 weeks of emailing with them. They send me Videomic Pro for free. I very satisfied with the service. Also great video dude.

I am really disappointed with RODE. I bought a videomic go ii, and I was so happy with it, truly good audio quality...but, all of a sudden, at only 9hrs of usage, it broke with no reason. Audio starts being waaaay too low. That's very poor quality. That's a pity.

The issue with that dead cat is horrible, holy crap. Seems like a terrible oversight in design that they then just didn't care to fix. Having a flap in the back there doesn't seem like it would be a big issue and wouldn't cost much more to have, but what do I know. It just renders it useless when there's a breeze, which is when it's supposed to be used :P

That'd probably solve it! The tricky part though is that it needs to enclose the back and front of the mic. My biggest gripe is that the windscreen they sell specifically for this microphone doesn't do this which is rather annoying.

Oh I assume it is a fake account.
