One more basic sound processor that should always be used in post-production is compressor/limiter. That makes the voice much more pleasant for listener and helps to level up inconsistencies in your voice and in recording levels.

Oh yes please. Even huge channels still don't use compressor/limiter and it is annoying when watching it with speakers.

Agreed. Limiter/compression/de-esser can be applied in OBS as well. For those that are streaming.

Really good information and great delivery. The Sound on the Rode VideoMicro is great. This setup really does require keeping a consistent distance from the microphone, so not to overload the volume settings. Once of the reasons the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus or the Rode VideoMic NTG is nice is because it has a safety channel just in case you accidently get loud you still can get clean audio from the other channel. I do find that some cameras have very noisy capacitors, so if you are not running the camera a minimum volume and cranking the microphone at the source you will continue to have background hiss to the recording. I use a Rode VideoMic Pro Plus into an M50 where the M50 is at a minimum volume and I adjust the volume on the microphone to get the right volume and if I adjust the volume on the camera and lower the volume on the microphone then I will start to get background hiss. FYI. I did have an issue where I accidently lefty the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus plugged into power which cause a ground loop and horrible sound. At that point I had to pull audio from another camera, so having a second source of audio is always nice especially if it is a recording you can't redo. If you are using powered cameras be aware of this sort of issue.

For the past couple years, I've mostly used a Rode Lavalier mic ($60) for Zoom and other teleconferences and for some light office home video. I just upgraded to a highly rated full size USB-C condensor mic, a NEOM. ALong the way, I dug my out rarely used MOVO VXR10 and discovered how good it is as a studio mic. At two ounces, I can just clamp it on an overhead extension arm desk lamp. I also discovered I have a RODE Videomicro (way at the bottom of my box) which also works very well and seems to have less baseline humm than the MOVO. In short, I completely agree with this video.

I recently purchased the RodeVM (had i not been pressed for time I would have used your affiliate link) and I used it to film theatre showings of my HS senior. The audio from the RVM is excellent and along with purchasing the Canon 22mm f/2 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 the videos came out terrific. In this particular video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHjEmIOrgMqaaJo it was necessary to deviate from the RVM audio track and switch to the in-camera mic at minute 01:49 and though the RVM is certainly better; I think the m50 mic isn’t too bad at all. Fyi, i did leave the dead cat on to reduce crowd and pit band noise. The first weekend of shows I filmed with the 22mm and purchased the 56mm for the second weekend. I am very pleased with the 56mm footage. Its been a steep learning curve working out the VSDC editing software but certainly worth the effort. Thx again Mark for the terrific videos.

Great video especially on the audio level adjustment. I purchased recently a Rode video micro 2. I love the sound quality. However when I use it on my mirrorless camera, it picks up the AF noise of my lens. Cheers for making this video! I recently upgraded my video setup, to the Sony ZV E-10, and needed a good mic. I ended up getting the Røde Videomic Pro+, but I'm happy to see that the Micro can produce some nice material as well. I was looking at that one first, but decided to go a little higher, in terms of price. As you also mention, the post-processing is key, and a little compression and EQ, will go a long way, and greatly improve the overall sound quality. That's mainly what I tend to do, when recording voice, etc. Thanks for the video. Have a jolly Christmas-time. Cheers.

I am sooo glad that you made this video. I watch videos about audio and video gear almost religiously. I have seen in passing, about five different videos somewhat complaining about shortcomings of this microphone that don't actually exist. Everything that they are doing is wrong. It is so bad that one 'reviewer' was saying it had low output levels, but did not know how to adjust his input level in his camera. I was just complaining about one of these videos to my wife last night. I know the mic sounds great for it's price because I own one. I really feel like you should at least have a basic knowledge about audio before you post videos as a 'reviewer'. Anyhow, at least you came up on my feed to calm my frustration. Make more videos.

Hey mark had to share with you : ) after bouncing all over the place on a camera purchase I ended up with the M6 (Mark) II , I cant help but think of you synonymous with the entire M series LOL I had a M3 come in from Amazon with a nick on the sensor I have no idea why they would have sent me that as "very good" condition? Is there a way to put an extension cable on the Lightning version of this mic?

Thank you for this video! Even implementing all these tips (which have helped), I'm still getting a static buzzing sound in the background of my videos, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any advice? 😩

This is so hard to diagnose in a comment, but I'll try. Three things I would look at,, first is the cable, (1) is it plugged in properly (pushed all the way in) (2) is it the right cable, the cable that came with the mic is made for a camera, not a computer or phone (3) is the cable faulty, try another cable. After that it could be just bad pre-amps in the camera, or a faulty mic.

@@markwiemels ah, it very well could be the cord. I have been using a longer one that I bought separately so I could put the mic closer to me, but I'll try the original cord to see if the buzzing goes away. thank you so much for your reply!

When you talk about speaking behind a camera / handycam companies should have put a switch in there so we could switch to omnidirectional or a pop-up microphone you can swivel backwards 🤟

Hello Mark. Thanks for this video. It’s really helpful. Have a qs, hope you can answer. I shoot my videos on iPhone 12 and now looking to use the rode video micro go for better sound. I understand that I need a rode sc7 cable and a 3.5mm to lightening adapter for videomicro to work with iPhone however the videomicro will be at some distance from me as the sc7 cable is not long. How can I bring the mic closer, ie is there a workaround? I want to have the mic as close to my mouth as possible but the trs to trss cable that I’ve looked at are all same length. Faisal

Mark how much of a sound difference to use Rode VIdeoMicro Me-L that plugs in lightning port of iPhone 13 pro? Some saying you will have a much better quality using one you got with the adaptor. Does it make that much of a difference? Thanks Mark tech man!

This is the best video I've seen done on this mic so I'll ask the question here. Would you think I could use this mic with a longer cable and run it straight into a switcher? Blackmagic ATEM Mini switcher if you are familiar with it. Would a longer cable work at all?

Yes, as long at the unit take a TRS input, it will be fine.

Great video, thank you. If we're going to do a talking head and don't want the mic in the video, is it better to put the video micro directly underneath or above the head of the shot?

Which actually sounds better varies based on a number of environmental factors, so try both and see. Both are valid options.
