Correct they are made for fuel, they just can't sell them as fuel containers because of the EPA.

The tag on it when you get it says it’s for chemicals solvents oils etc everything but fuel. You’re right it’s just for legal purposes. If it can handle chemicals and solvents it can handle gas.

I had several of these cans. Eventually, they will leak because the threads warp and the gaskets go bad. Flex hose gets brittle and cracks.

If fuel is stored for long periods of time they can leak, however if you use them occasionally they’ll hold up fine due to fumes venting. As far as the hose goes I never leave it on when stored.. always leave the original red button plug it came with to seal the gas in.

I recently saw an old boy filling a 5 quart oil jug with gasoline at the station... 🤣 The VP jugs are nice.

We've had the same style jug for over 20 years, through countless race weekends and use on the farm with zero issues. The government can pound sand 😂
