You can substitute elk tallow with beef tallow that can be bought online or in some stores. Or make your own by melting fat trimmings and filtering out the solids.

nice! would be cool to see if there is any differences between different types of tallow. I'm hoping I get a fat fall bear this season so I can try some different things out.

Yeah that would be awesome. I know the settlers used bear tallow for a lot of things including leather care. I understand it’s not as waxy as the elk or deer so I’d expect it to penetrate deeper. I hope you get a bear too Bradley!

Thank you for the great feedback and echoing the message! It only took me 45yrs to reward myself with a set of boots like this, and I want to make sure they get the care they deserve, and the animal the respect it deserves 👍

I read somewhere uowever that using animal fats may damage the leather over time due to the salt content in them

Interesting… maybe that’s if you’re using cured animal fat products. I’d imagine mink oil etc would have preservative salts in them. I don’t think it’s an issue with self rendered fats unless you add it. Of course I then run the risk of spoiled fats, but so far so good. Nothing stinky and the leather seems to love it.

Thank you for the reminder - yes, I had planned on doing something once I used this on my hunting boots during some rough weather. I’ll say however - on my work boots, this stuff has been the best I’ve ever used. Needs the least amount of reapplication, keeps the leather clean and water resistant, and doesn’t over saturate or soften it too much.
