I've never heard of conditioning with saddle soap. I use it to clean very dirty leather with some water and a brush so it gets nicely lathered up. My experience is that it's a great cleaner that dries the leather out a bit, not a conditioner at all. I always have to condition after using saddle soap. It leaves a film because you're supposed to use it with water and wipe it off, just like you wouldn't use soap as a hand lotion.

Thanks for the love Rose Anvil! Would love to send you our Water Protectant No. 3 formula as it was specifically formulated to protect leather against the elements/moisture/water/snow/etc. The beautiful thing about this protectant is that it is able to provide a high level of water repellency WITHOUT clogging up the pores of the leather. This allows the leather to continue to breathe, which is super important. As you likely know, all of our products are not only made from ALL-NATURAL, but cosmetic grade ingredients. Don't hesitate to reach out should you have questions at any time! Cheers.

Love your videos. You are obvioisly a gifted leather worker. However, these are fair criticisms. And it's nice to see a few mistakes sometimes. Reminds us KZbinrs don't always have a team of writers. But yes sir, there are a few things to note. The saddle soap as many others have pointed out. It's purely a cleaner. It is important to apply with a wet applicator only after rubbing the applicator on the soap cake until it begins to froth. Then either wipe off immediately, or lit it dry then brush off. The discoloration you noted with the saddle soap is a result of it drying out the leather beneath. That's when you would reach for the other items you have in this video. As far as the conditioners you have in your video, they each have their strengths for specific use cases. The mink oil is an excellent choice for restoring older leather pieces. It also contains natural water resistant properties. Not as strong as the Aussie, but certainly better than the other items. I say that, but the leather conditioner has the potential to give the mink oil a run for it's money. Depending on the type. Fiebings leather balm has atom wax mixed in with it. This serves as a wax coating when buffed in. The Aussie is great for purses or handbags that are exposed to the elements due to it's higher water resistance. This is owed to it's petroleum base with need wax additive. All great products depending on what you need to use it on. Just taking the chance to return the favor for all of the knowledge you've shared to everyone that has watched your excellent videos!

The Best? The best I've used is Obenauf's, they have a wax and a oil. They do darken the leather quite a bit, but if you're worried about work boots that aren't meant to be pretty, Obenauf's is fantastic. I've brought weathered and sundried saddlebags back from the dead with that stuff, really impressive.

Good comparison. When cleaning my saddle and horse gear saddle soap works into the leather best when the applicator is quite damp. The moisture on the applicator allows the saddle soap to lather up which allows best cleaning and penetration.

I have used it for more than 20 years on my baseball and softball gloves and it works better than any other glove conditioner on the market so I figured I’d use it on my boots and have been for more than five years religiously with extremely satisfying results every time. My two cents

The Chamberlain's Leather Milk is the best one. I have been using it for many years. Chamberlain's Leather Milk is very safe to all kinds of leather and colors because it doesn't react with leather to change original leather color. It also has very nice smell and the nice smell remains on the jackets for a long time. The jackers never go bad smell with the Chamberlain's Leather Milk.

As am I. I was taught to always make sure I followed up the saddle soap with a conditioner on all surfaces, just more or less depending on what part of the saddle it was. You could always tell on the saddles when someone forgot the conditioner, they would look dry and matted. Maybe it's different for the leather used in shoes.

I second the Obenauf's. The normal oil soaks in and makes leather nice and soft. It also has that wonderful New leather smell. The LP is more like a paste. I hear a lot of loggers and linesman use it to waterproof their boots. I think their stuff is worth checking out if you haven't!
@edgeofeternity101

I always used plain old mink oil, but I got a jacket I wanted to soften up, and I found a product by Obenauf"s. It has some additional additives to deter mold and mildew and bacteria. I've used it on three pr of boots, and applied it like twice in a few days, and that was all I did, seems to work well. Ingredients are not disclosed so there is some secret formula that they protect.

I buy and resell leather, mostly jackets, chaps and occasionally boots. so I see a lot of neglected things in this upscale area. Having a personal affinity for Red Wing, I usually visit with my local dealer/ shoe repair who I've patronized for decades now, for advice and products. Several times I've acquired a pair of boots in a deal that were hopeless to most. I love a challenge so take 'em to see how far I can improve them. One particular pair of Doc Martins were exposed to some sort of chemical that withered the leather. My shoe repair took a look and shook his head then confided a recommendation; try Lexol. There are several shoe repair and leather restorers in my area and they all use Lexol. Yeah, it is a product marketed for car leather but it's leather. Leather that gets and sees a lot of use and abuse. So I did. - To date I haven't been able to redeem those boots but I have made about a 75% improvement. Totally salvaged a pair of dried on, paint splattered Harley boots and use the cleaner and conditioner on every leather item I bring home, now. - Knowing how people usually are about taking care of things, I recommend the Lexol all in one for maintenance, especially for winter boots. (salt) So sometime give Lexol a try. Love what you're doing here, I like that you take the time to explain the were as & why fores.

So instead of just picking 10 winners, I decided to send everyone who has commented as of (3pm MST on 10/25/19) a set of coasters. So CONGRATS! I just need you to send me your name and mailing address to service@roseanvil.com and we will get some in the mail for you! To make things easier on my end I will be sending these out on Tuesday in a big batch so please send me your address by Monday (10/28)! So don't miss that deadline if you want some. *Unfortunately we can only send free coasters to people with a US address.

I think the best would be a combined approach. Condition with one product and protect with a second product. Additionally the Saddle Soap is mostly a cleaner.

Hey just a tip. I noticed you said that some left residue behind. As far as I know the Aussie is supposed to be buffed off. I imagine the others are the same. The saddle soap is supposed to be rinsed off I don’t think it’s supposed to go on without rinsing. I could be wrong but I have a good bit of experience with saddle soap and Aussie. The hazing you see is the wax in the products that should be buffed off. Hope this helps. Thanks! -Mike

Cool thanks for the info. I didn’t put it in the video but I let them all sit for a while and then buffed off any residual conditioner off with a cloth.

So its just like hand lotions for dry skin. The protection is directly proportional to the oiliness and inversely proportional to residuelessness. Your favorite is the least protective.

You using the Aussie' , need to use a heat gun to thoroughly warm the leather beforehand. Continue to heat while applying. Repeat applications until it doesn't seem to penetrate. Allow to dry over night. Then buff. Can also apply on reverse.

I'm glad I came across your channel as I have a few leather pieces and would like to keep them in the best possible condition that I can. These pieces are an investment as I don't favor fast, unsustainable fashion. Your video was informative in learning possible conditioners for my leather garments. Thank you for sharing this useful information.

The saddle soap I think you applied incorrectly as it’s meant for cleaning and you daub it on and lather it up with a wet daubing brush like a shaving soap wipe off and leave to dry and then use your personal favoured leather cream or wax after - well that’s what I do unless I’m wrong it works for me 👍🏻

I think you're right, but a lot of people (I would expect most, honestly) use it like a leather conditioner, just like they showed in this video. When I bought my Red Wing boots, I asked if they sold saddle soap because i wanted a cleaner, and they said they didn't carry it because it wasn't a good conditioner. They seemed confused when I said I wanted it to clean the leather, not condition it.

notreallydaedalus it’s a really good cleanser I think , over the weekend I gave my Alfred Sergeants a good lathering wiped clean and allowed to dry then applied Wrens dark brown leather cream diligently worked in and left to dry over night buffed them up and did a final going over with cherry blossom dark brown hard (well more waxed consistency) allowed to sit on overnight again and a final buff with a horsehair brush and selvyt cloth, by my own admission I think even the most demanding drill sergeant would have been impressed lol I find polishing my leather shoes and belts therapeutic and makes me feel good wearing them even if others don’t just don’t get it.

@@dickiedollop I get it! Last year I bought a pair of Chippewa super logger boots. I did the same as you and they are holding up very well. I also had a pair of leather boots called prospectors that I bought at a thrift store just to wear around in general. I had been wearing them for 2 years and really abused them but to my surprise I cannot kill these things. I decided to actually clean them and condition them when I did the Chippewa boots. I have to say for an all round throw on boot for just doing whatever they sure have lasted and look amazing still. Water proof and the soles are still intact. Who would have thought I would get 3 years and counting out of a 15 dollar purchase

What happened to the D on the DuPont sign? Also, I personally think Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP (leather preservative) is one of the best overall leather treatments out there, it conditions, nourishes, softens it up some, and waterproofs as well. And if your leather is really dry, their Leather Oil will seriously saturate and help to make it more supple than ever. It's good stuff! Have you ever tried it? I'd assume so.
