Truly great speakers. The mid range is mind blowing. Vocals are incredibly clear and smooth. The bass (if away from the wall) is punchy and controlled. ZERO listening fatigue, listening to these speakers for hours. Had them for months, and I strongly recommend them to anyone.

@RobCCTV

@@pironi2405 Any modern amp with a power rating of 100+ watts is good. Seriously. Speaker quality is HUGELY more important than any perceived [usually not actually there] quality differences between amps. Similarly, almost any modern DAC of 24 bits or over will be good enough to make these speakers excell.

I have an old pair of floor standing 3-way Wharfedale speakers with updated crossovers, which are my best pair. Amazing.. I would need 6-7k to even think about something different. Best hand me down gift ever! I hope they outlive me. Whatfedale’s are great, but not cheap for the best examples.👨🏻The Linton’s and KLH model 5’s are nice, but a compromise from full blown floor standers. Towers can be a bit of a joke. I wouldn’t buy any big speaker that needs a sub. If I’m going to use subs, it’s going to be in a home theater setup or it’s going to enhance bookshelf speakers on stands for stereo.😉

This is indeed a speaker that makes you smile from the first moment and for many hours to follow. I got them and a refurbished Denon PMA-1060 amplifier for 1550 euros total. A very satisfying and balanced solution. If you don't need more, don't change. With a more expensive and more capable amplifier the Lintons can get a bit bass heavy.

Narrowness dont play a part on how big a speaker would sound, rather the total volume of the speaker does. For example the Diamond 12.4, very narrow but tall and deep giving a respectable total cabinet volume. Narrow speakerd are also great to avoid nasty difractions.

Hi Mike, came across this impressive and detailed review. Appreciate the insights. I currently own a pair of Klipsch RP 6000f floorstanders. Had it about 3.5 years. Now am thinking of getting the Lintons after rather good reviews including yours. My issue is this, I can only pull the Klipsch out from my back wall about 8 inches( measured by rear of the speaker cabinet to the wall). So I may not have too much distance to pull out the Lintons. My listening position is about 7 to 8 feet away from speakers. My living room is small, 10 feet by 10 feet with glass doors at one end and open space at the other. Can I have the Lintons closer to the wall and still sound good in my listening room given the measurements? Would it be better than my current RP 6000f ( which I use without a sub) I notice the Lintons in your friends review was placed close to the wall. Second question is will the Lintons pair well with a solid state XTZ power amp ( about 300W at 4 ohms) and a Schitt Freya Tube pre. Thirdly, will these Lintons be good as the Klipsch for movies. Can it be matched with a Klipsch RP 600c which I currently have. I also have klipsch dipole surrounds. Appreciate your views. Thank you.

I own the pair of Wharfedale Linton 3 speakers that my parents bought in aug 1974. The speakers and layout are totally (!) different than this modern version. I have always missed the high-end clarity, though they have a very rich bass and mid. Compared to other speakers I always found them sound rather dull. Since I lately obtained from friends an amplifier that was able to drive channels A and B simultaneously, I added a different pair of speakers with very clear tweeters, in order to compensate for the lack of these in the old Linton 3 speakers. This is a tad better soundwise, but there is no clear space definition of the sound image. As I have this setup in my barn where I have the space to put 2 pairs of speakers side by side (on a shelve), but this setup is limiting on the amplifier choice , which needs to be able to drive 2 speaker channels at the same time...

I don’t get that people want speakers without grilles. It reduces WAF, looks ugly in most cases and exposes drivers to damage. I’d love to put the grilles on my Buchardts, but the ridiculous disc grills look dumb and most definitely introduce diffraction artifacts. I find it admirable that Wharfedale recognizes the desire for real furniture vs. utility loudspeakers.

The Linton's have a lot more detail and impact since they are a bigger more sophisticated speaker. I don't have much modern electronic music, but IMO, the Lintons sound best with classical and jazz (or well recorded music that doesn't sound too compressed or processed). They actually strike me as fairly neutral with a warm touch. I've noticed they are not always that forgiving with some harsher recordings of the '70s or even the '80s. Then the broad mid-range can be too exposing for certain frequencies, resulting with me quickly reaching for the volume knob. Note that this is just my experience. There are plenty of other people claiming that the Lintons make everything sound good. I guess we all have different ears.

I've also found them sounding much closer to neutral than I expected, but still pleasant to listen to. There's a definite edge to some frequencies that can make the midrange sound a little 'sharp' on some older recordings, but I also noticed a difference between amplifiers. I started with a Yamaha rxa2040 AV amp (140 Watts into 8 ohms apparently), and then a Leak 230 (75 Watts into 8 ohms). The Leak sounds twice as powerful and actually produces bass that matches the volume of the midrange. It now sounds fuller and more forgiving of older recordings.

You had to ask? I had that one in 2013. HIgher end NADs can drive two ohm loads, and even if that turns out to be an embellishment, it has highly sophisticated protection circuitry that will keep you from damaging the amp.

@@dan-qe1tb You had the same amp as me? Excellent, what did you think of it? I bought this set together with some speakers and to me it all sounds very thin. I don't have extra amps or speakers to swap around so I can't be certain where the problem lies; perhaps my speakers are just too lean sounding, or did you have this experience too with the NADs? Deep down my set does have reasonable bass, mid-bass quickly sounds a bit muddy, but the mids just sound too thin for me.

@@MarcelNL Yes I had blown it up trying to replace its cheap Chinese electrolytic capacitors, and ended up throwing it out in 2013 I believe. Not an easy board to DIY. It was a brute that he seemed like it was about power over finesse. 1980s NAD and Quad power amps I had used after had a warmer, smoother sound with less resolution. I don't think your thin midrange and muddy bass problems are about the amp but rather your speakers and where you had placed them.

I tried a NAD pre-power amp combo with Monitor Audio Silver 8s back in early 2015 and it also sounded thin in the midrange. Took the amps back and got a Yamaha RXA2040 instead and it sounded fuller, despite being a less powerful amplifier.

Notice he never says the speakers sound good or really good. Decent. Just bought a pair.. I do like the sound. KLH 5 have more detail and better timbre. But I only have a hour or so on the Linton's. What I do luv about the Linton's is there very smooth and warm sounding. I will report back after 50 hours.

Is there any company out there that makes a speaker without out sourcing to China? I'm an Aussie DJ audio/visual engineer of some 30 years...I'm 61 now. It's a valid question. China are hardly popular on a global stage and aligning themselves with Russia and North Korea proves this. Wharfedale are an English company. Ok they have to follow the English standards of construction but when I saw Made in China on the back, I just felt a bit sad and sold out! Australia does not make any model of car! Period! No more Holdens or Fords and boy we made some serious V8 muscle cars in the 70s. This saving of cash is a cop out. Are they great speakers? Obviously....I own a pair of Wharfedale book shelf speakers but bit by bit I feel that every country is losing it's identity to what I call CHEAP CHINA SYNDROME! Ok so we might use parts from other countries like Japan but Japan make high quality components like resistors for example and sometimes you want Takmans in your signal path because they're great. Russia are, or should I say were making great new Valves for modern tube amplifiers. I hope this ridiculous war ends soon so that we can do business with them again cos they make great valves. Just not while Putin is in control. I own a Primaluna HP Integrated Amplifier running 6 12AU7s on the input side and 8 EL34s on the business end and it is a beautiful amplifier and my Wharfedale speakers sing when I play anything on them from Enya to Queen. I know it has foreign parts in it...DUH, but Kevin Deal still holds the reins and only uses the best parts sourced from all over the world each time he releases a new product under the Primaluna name. I haven't had the chance to listen to the Lintons, but I will when I get the chance. Cheers from down under, Andrew.

Sound is subjective for everyone. For those who listen to music, most speakers will sound gud after they get used to the sound. I always laugh at reviewers who claim this or that, only cuz they try to listen to "sounds" and not "music. They sit in a chair perfectly placed and sit on pins and needles, never relaxing their rectums waiting for the slightest sounds...unlike 99% consumers who don't try to listen to every nuances of a fart.

Terrible terrible speakers. Supremely marketed. The crossover and the tweeter are serious weakpoints. The flat, greyish, dull overall signature with a ringy treble/upper mid and a lack of transient attack renders these not only lacking musicality but also harshness in the lower treble and upper presence region. They also have pretty poor stereo imaging. A similarly or much lower priced pair of Focals wipe the floor with them.... proper in house drivers made by the actual maker for one thing.

The great British speakers made in China like many so-called British loudspeakers. Quite sad really!
@mykandrew

So let me ask you this, if I designed and engineered a speaker in the US from top to bottom, but had it assembled overseas to save money on each unit so that way I could sell it at a reasonable price and still offer much value for what you are buying, or offer the same product, same quality at quadruple the price because I assembled it in the US, which do you feel is a better deal for the consumer? Where it's made has no bearing on where it's engineered and designed, nor does it impact the final performance of the product. People have this false sense that because it's assembled where it's designed its this pure blood product. Reality is, if people who like speakers want these companies to last the next 15-20 years, give them a break. They are still putting out quality products. The Linton's are phenomenal speakers and all you are worried about is where they were assembled. That's what is truly sad.

@@mykandrew Hi was not trolling but there are laws of physics/ electrical theory that I have used all my life and speaker wires are not going to affect the output as long as the impedance is kept to a minimum .
