Between the two I'd have to put my $ on the model 5's mainly based on looks but also sealed over ported. You may loose some bottom end grunt but I have subs for that. Ultimately though I'll stick with my Forte iv's. It feels really good to be secure in all my decisions for my setup. No matter what the next best thing is I'm so happy with my system. I really wish that for everyone! I know I always thank you both for all your help and you're r probably sick of hearing it. Best wishes to you both and happy Holidays!

So after a glowing review of the KLH Model 5, we get an end of year review of the Linton’s where they pronounced “ better” than the KLH and awarded the Speaker of the Year? C’mon you guys! This review and the one on the B&W 606-S2’s indicate to me that your ears and opinions are sometimes all over the map. Interesting coming from reviewers whose reference speakers are Klipsch’s. I have heard both and the Linton and KLH and the voicing is just different. If you want a warm, musical sound with deep base and a rolled off tweeter, go for the Lintons. If you want more clarity and detail with a more forward sound and tight controlled bass, go for the KLH. Neither is “better”. Better for who?

I decided to get rid of my Wharfedale Linton 85th anniversary speakers. Bought a pair of KEF LS50 Meta, then a pair of Buchardt S400 MKII. They are all great sounding speakers with their pros and cons. On their own, they all sound fantastic. Play them side by side and you easily find out what you prefer. Ones not better, just different. After chasing the best sound for me, the Linton's are back in my listening room for good.

A big thank you to Andrew for his reviews of the Wharfedale Linton Heritage speakers (and also the Audiolab 6000a). Both these reviews finally put an end to a somewhat long and frustrating search for an excellent system. I’ve never written a youtube comment, but have read lots of them. I understand that everybody’s tastes are different, but in an effort to attest to Andrew’s reviews of the Lintons (and the 6000a), and pay it forward to someone who may be struggling to find a great system, here’s a quick summary of what I was looking for, what I auditioned, and why I ended up with the Lintons and the 6000a. From a system standpoint I was looking for something simple which allowed me to stream music from a music streamer (how I listen 90% of the time at least for now) and allowed for the potential to upgrade my system. Sound wise I was looking for something that had the following characteristics: Detailed, but non-fatiguing sound (slightly warm?); engaging sound that pulls you into the music, but not in a sterile, overly analytical way; three-dimensional sound; wide, deep, spacious and accurate sound stage… Essentially something that, to me at least, provides a truly immersive and enjoyable listening experience. For reference my listening rooms fluctuate from a ~17’ wide x ~43’ deep room to a 14’ wide x 16’ deep room. I listen to an equal amount of all varieties of music from Jazz/Jazz Fusion, Ambient, Electronic, Bluegrass, Folk, World, and a fair amount of the Grateful Dead as well… even though most their live recordings sound less than ideal. Yes, the Audiolab & Linton combo provides plenty of volume even in my larger room. Regarding the Lintons. My first impressions were that perhaps I made a mistake as they had a muffled, boxy sound that lacked detail, particularly on the high end. I read that others said to give them time “break in” and they open up. I can 100% confirm that within a week of playing them that is exactly what happened. The treble somehow became as detailed as I would like it. The soundstage became extremely spacious. They became the speakers that everyone raved about. Did they “break in” or did my ears readjust? It really doesn’t matter to me what happened, they sound great. Speakers I auditioned: B&W 606: Too much treble Q Acoustics 3050i: Not detailed enough, missing something? Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 and F6.2: Great sound, but not engaging enough Kef LSX: Awesome sound, but too small For the Audiolab 6000a I knew fairly quickly upon plugging it in that this amp was going to probably be the one. That said, I did compare it to the AXR100, CXA 81 and even the Rotel RA-1572 mkII with the Lintons. The Audiolab just had, at least to my ears, something special about it. Each time I switched back to the Audiolab, those sound qualities I felt may be slightly missing from the others, came back. The Audiolab put a smile on my face, which at the end of the day is what it’s all about. Here's the amps that I auditioned: CXA 61 & 81: I waited for all the hype to come through on these but it never happened. Just my ears and opinion though AXR100: Not as detailed and the fan noise was a deal breaker Yamaha as501: To harsh on the high end despite my efforts to break in the amp, also lacking a little bass or “umph” Denon PMA 600NE: Lacked the spaciousness, 3d and detailed sound Bluesound Powernode: Too me it just was missing something or a few things, not engaging enough? Sonos Amp: Same as the Powernode Rotel RA-1571mkII: To finalize my Audiolab 6000a decision (paired with the Lintons) I decided to see if doubling my spend on an amp would be justified with an increase in performance. Although it provided more power and other nice features, I preferred the Audiolab sound. In fact, in an A/B comparison, when I switched from the Rotel to the Audiolab my wife (who appreciates music but could care less about “hi-fi”) almost immediately said “That one sounds better, which one is that?” So I ended with this: WiiM Mini into the optical on the Audiolab 6000a powering the Lintons. Very happy with the results. Thank you again to Andrew for his reviews and especially for Kristi’s succinct comment about the Audiolab 6000a being “the un-suck it button for speakers”. That comment helped me hit the buy button for the Audiolab. Hope this helps!

I have been building and measuring speakers for the past 5 years. From my in room measurements, Linton out performed many speakers. From 300hz to 10khz, it is almost flat with around +/-2 dB. Not many speakers can pull this off. However below the transition frequency (250hz), the room essentially took over and that could induce some peaks and nulls. This, I think is the main issue with this speaker. The +5db in this region could easily excite the room and to a certain extent muddy the lower mid. This is where you need to play around with positioning, room acoustics or even tame the bass down slightly using a PEQ/ room EQ. Once you get that sorted, this speaker is going to beat a lot of other more expensive competitions out there. KLH on the other hand has a significant dip between 1 to 2khz... From psychoacoustics point of view, we are most sensitive to the 1khz to 3khz region, as this is where most audible speech syllables reside. So any imperfections here could easily be picked out. A dip would therefore make the vocal sound thin and unnatural. The other problem is the lack of bass for the KLH. No problem if you partner KLH with a sub, but if you intended this as a pure 2 channel listening then, I would rather take on the Linton. Taming bass down is easier with room EQ but boosting them up would create more potential distortions. That's my bass management philosophy; hence Linton is a big win for me.
@jonuiuc
@jonuiuc 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, have you posted your measurements in a forum or blog anywhere? Stereophile's M5 measurements show about a 3db dip in between 1k and 1.8k but that is similar to their Linton which shows a 2.5db dip between 1.4k and 2.1k.

Thanks for the great review, I love the vintage speaker look and for me here in New Zealand the Linton's were a no brainer as KLH's are more than 2X the price at around $3,700 USD equivalent, JBL L100s aren't available, and the Klipsch heritage line starts at the equivalent of $5,700 USD for the Heresy IV. Similar story for a lot of other audio gear reviewed on your channel. So shout out to IAG for ensuring retail prices for its brands are reasonable - even in small countries where next stop on the bus is Antarctica!

I'm just down the road from you (practically) in Lower Hutt, I love my Lintons so much - and I went from KEF LS50W to this. I also auditioned the KLH Model 5's and preferred the Lintons. Just such a shame we can't audition more brands, so very limited in options here in NZ.

It's about time you reviewed these. =) I bought these over a year ago and have them paired with a Naim Uniti Atom. This setup is not only just flat out convenient to use, but it's a sound that I can listen to all day long without any fatigue or one that becomes flat and boring. IMO, the Naim is a great match that "livens" up the speaker's slightly laid back and warmer side of neutral presentation.

Andrew, thanks for the review. I have a pair of Linton's with the stands. They were purchased in April of 2020. I'm a old timer here. These Linton's are paired with my restored Marantz 2270 that I purchased new in the middle seventies, a Technics SL-Q200, Sony Compact disc player CDP-C435 and a BlueSound Node 2i. They have a nice warm sound that both my wife and I enjoy. They do sound much better while using my turntable or CD player over the streamer.

This review is spot on! I have both the Lintons and Model 5s in my room and until you A & B them you don’t realize what you’re missing. I’m running these with a Audiolab 6000. Lintons fill the room and have warm soothing vocal, better at low volumes and bass for drums or classical music is more realistic. Placement can be troubling with rear ports and the soft dome tweeter won’t ever wow you. Model 5s are more energetic, nimble, with detailed highs, easier to place and want the volume turned up to shine. The negatives are only in comparison when hearing each speaker back to back. The model 5s sound thin, and vocals come across as lean and held back. (This could be my amp as the model 5s are very transparent) I don’t believe one speakers is better than the other just in comparison to cost the KLH is 35% more. (Still a great value) The KLH fits in my room more seamlessly with looks but the wharfedale are built better. Choose the KLH if you want to hear more from a detailed yet neutral speaker, and you like to listen to them loud once in awhile. Choose the Wharfedales if you like easy listening, no fatigue and enjoy the vocals over the detail.

I just had a chance to listen to the Linton's and the model 5's side by side at a shop here in Seattle. They were in a decent sized room 20X25' with about a 10' ceiling. I was listening through a Luxman amp which I think put out 100 watts per side. I am not sure if it had to do with the Amp and speaker pairing or not (however I don't think anything would sound too bad through the Luxman), but I thought the Lintons were a bit boomy. I thought I could hear a boxy sound coming out of them too. After the reviews I thought I would love them right off the bat. And they were pulled about 4 feet from the wall. I heard them first and commented on it to the person helping me. He said I would love the 5's and brought them into the listening room. Initially I thought they sounded a bit thin. The the person put the speakers almost up against the wall. Wow is all I can say. The KLH's have a much more realistic bass, and it was much much quicker than the Lintons. I ended up pulling them out from the wall about a foot and a half from the wall and the sound only improved. Unfortunately the price was a bit out of range as the cost for the KLH's has risen to about $2700 once taxes are added on. I honestly wish the Lintons did it for me as I could actually justify the cost. To be honest I am not sure if it was the interplay between the Amp and the speakers, or maybe the large room that gave the 5's the advantage. With a brighter amp in a smaller room the Lintons might have the advantage. I am just glad I got to hear them side by side.

Absolutely dead on for the review. After scrutinous searching for the best and more affordable 3 way, I settled with the Lintons last year. And while I still love them (no honey, we're not getting rid of them) they are indeed a full bodied, more relaxing, mature sounding speaker. That's why I picked up the Transpulse1500s this year. While both can rock your face right off, the Lintons are the Cool Guy. The Magnats are his best friend The Party Guy, and I am glad I can hang with both. One's Whiskey, the other's Wine.

Had a listen today. First thing I noticed was boomy bass with no definition, they were 10cm from a wall, asked dealer to pull them out. Only marginally better. Then Noticed on the magnat amp that someone has cranked the bass past neutral by about a third. Turned it down to below neutral point from there it sounded balanced. They are prodigious bass producers. Bass texture was ok, there was an instant where a bass drum had definition. The speakers had only been playing two weeks though so not broken in. Mid is not too forward but well judged, male and female vocals sound personal and human, quite honest if you like and whole. I didn't find treble grainy. There is detail and sparkle but it's never harsh. Overall it sounds very balanced top to bottom with no sharp edges and it is warm. Guitar strings had excellent timbre. It makes you feel content and like a smile has been transplanted into your core. You want to listen and listen. Off axis still sounds good but of course much more detail in the sweet spot. The soundstage is big but imaging is poor to average. NB this itself is not a bad thing as over imaging carries its own fatiguability IMO. Centre image is good but nice and wide rather than a laser beam. Overall I am sold and will likely get them in a few months. Warm easy musical listening, enough definition but never tricking you to pull the music to bits. I hope bass definition increases I'm sure it will. The speakers do not disappear at all, don't get them if you want that. Sound is presented just in front of the speakers a foot or so.

I have the Lintons for like 7 months now, and unlike to what some people might think, they DON'T make poor recordings with harsh mids sound great. For that you need Harbeth speakers with recessed mids. However, the mild tweeter of the Lintons does make remasters with too much added 'brilliance' way more tolerable. So if you listen to Jazz, you will never experience fatigue with ride cymbals or hi-hats. In that regard they are 'forgiving' speakers but they will not mask the harshness in mids often found older on recordings re-released on CD. They excel with classical music and female Jazz vocalists, recordings that sound natural as opposed to compressed and processed. Andrew is right when he says they are very balanced, nothing (not the bass, the mid-range or the tweeter) sticks out or calls attention to itself. It 's like your hearing one full range driver.

Andrew I can’t tell you how much I needed this review. I bought the Lintons 6 months ago locally, after watching your review of the KLH and how much you guys gushed over them… I needed professional validation from someone who had heard both. I bought them because they were a definite upgrade, width wise fit my space and were cheaper. As an avid Jazz listener, I have to say the warm round sound fits the genre very well. However, having upgraded from Klipsch bookshelves, I was missing some of that upper-end sparkle. So ever since I purchased them I’ve had an internal battle as to if I made the right decision. But tonight when I put a record on, I will smile a little easier knowing they made speaker of the year in your book. I paired it to the Rouge Audio Sphinx integrated. Ever thought of reviewing it?

Owned walnut Lintons for a year and your review nailed it. I have popular Elacs and Klipsch and they each have their strengths, but for grabbing a book and listening to some jazz, these are it. They adapt well to a variety of genres and have a solid, classy build. That build looks great with my silver-faced Yamaha amp between them. They are my Easy Like Sunday Morning speaker of choice. Excellent review!

well this completely solidified my want to upgrade to these from the denton 80th once I get a space that can accommodate their size and I can afford them. I fell in love with the wharfedale sound and knew these would just be a lot of that but even better! also kristie is right a light oak option would look great! I personally prefer the red mahogany. Andrew, this & other reviews went a long way into helping me make the decision to go with these fantastic speakers! I matched with them with the NAD C 3050 with Bluesound OS Card & they sound incredible. Honestly it sounds like the singer is in the room, when the Blues singers taps his foot, you can hear what the sole of his shoe is made of! Warm, velvety, bass, an absolute pleasure to listen to! Hey guys, another great review ! I own the Lintons and also tried the Dentons in my room. For those who are deciding between the two, my finding was that the Denton’s treble was a smidge to hot for my taste and my room. That and the Lintons larger sound made me send the Dentons back. @Andrew: Did you by any chance try them with your Decware amp ? I’d be curious if it could drive the 90db Lintons.

I picked up some vintage Glendale XP2s in November. Similar dimensions, also 3-way but asymmetrical tweeter and midrange and sealed / air suspension design. I absolutely love the tone and musicality. Despite very large woofers though the bass is perhaps a little too civilised by 21st century standards so a little bit of help from my subwoofer puts it over the top.

I got the Linton with the LEAK Stereo 130 and CDT. I love them as a music lover. They give me everything I want and need. I did move them around 2ft away from the wall, toe them and they make listening to music enjoyable for hours and hours. Adding a sub today for some subtle additional kick as at low volume levels (when the babies are in bed) I need a little bit more body in the kick drums or bass guitar. Glad I took a gamble on these when they first came out. Rock, singer songwriter, classic rock, jazz, electronic, it all sounds great. Lower quality recording sound good and they are forgiving, better quality recordings shine with tons of space between instruments and realistic live sounding vocals, guitars and drums……oh my lord, anything with drum fills and toms sounds out of this world.

@karsten7964 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew; I've seen your review with interest! I've purchased a pair of Linton 85th's + stands about two years ago and I agree that bass is pretty strongly represented; These systems need space behind them and a room with a bit of volume. An amp with a good damping factor and , more important, good phase margin helps quite a bit to control it. Not a lot of tube amps meet these requirements and nor do the lesser gods among the transistor amps either. My Marantz PM KI Pearl Lite has plenty of control over the speakers, warm midrange and refined treble; I'm happy with the combo. Lower butget tip: My NAD D3020 had no problem with driving these systems either. One point of critisism: Resolution in lower midrange suffers a bit from the rather high crossover point of +/-650Hz. Especially classical music and acoustic jazz, recorded in a live room need that resolution to bring across room acoustics. Systems with separate units for lower- and upper midrange do better in that respect, yep; A three way system is still a compromise. Next to a set of "nitpickers" like the Translator Reflexion or Celestion DL4 Series Two it's allways nice to have a set of "Golden Retrievers" like these Lintons in my room. Back to the bass: Initially bass was an issue; Control was okay but there was too much of it in my room. As an engineer and speaker upgrader/designer I decided to do some measurements regarding the tuning of the reflex system: Both ports closed: Fc= 46Hz, Both ports open: Fb= 39Hz. (This system is tuned for allmost maximum bass) One port closed: Fb= 27Hz (less bass but more extension) In my room (5x8metres), using the it in full length, the Linton 85th's sound best with one port closed. If the extra bass extension causes room resonances to get triggered, try the 85's with both ports closed. With an Fc of 46Hz. there will still be plenty of extension left ;-) Up next: Refining/upgrading the damping behind midrange and woofer; Sorry Wharfedale; Can't help it; It's in the blood ;-) Kind regards; Karsten The Netherlands

It occurred to me last night that the Wharedale that has the more similar presentation to the KLH model 5 is the larger Evo. 4.4 or 4.3. As a freestanding speaker, the cost is not hidden as it is when considering the Lintons. I found an AB test of the Evo 4.4 vs the Linton 85 Anniversary last night and was quite surprised how much better the EVO 4.4 is verses the Linton. As I try to sort through how fair it is to compare 2021 products vs available products. I did no have to go far to find that the EVO 4.4 is also priced more or less the same as the KLH model 5, whereas the Lintons can be found discounted. I too want to save where it is possible. If I want the absolute sound, however, I think the EVO 4.4 or perhaps the 4.3, may be is the better product to consider. The Evo 4.4 vs the Linton appears to be able to allow the ear to follow not just the melody line but the inner voices of chords within music easier. The drivers used on the EVO, provide a different sonic signature. Those old glam rock recordings that cause so many ear aches are full of high frequency hiss and rim shots that kept the drums slamming. Wouldn't a different dac filter for this kind of old and poorly recorded material be the better way to stop the Ear Bleeding, and at a lower cost?

Warmth and character are well embraced, here. The Lintons have a beauty to them, of their own. That's the beautiful aspect ( never a conflict) of being a music lover, and this awesome passion ( not really a hobby), for music: Everyone has their own ears, their own tastes in music and sound. Apply or withhold seasoning till your palate says.....ahhhhhh : ) I leave measurements, parts quality evaluations and such: to the Professionals. Nothing but respect. I however love so much music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's not perfectly recorded, mixed or mastered. Most of the physical media for all that music, requires a dash of warmth and a dash of character, lol. It's also wonderful to be blessed with two or more systems in the house. So the higher end recordings and masterings....can " transparently " sing their glory. Thank you for your awesome review, A & K!!!

Meanwhile the 826’s I bought were much cheaper (on sale, plus discount) than either of them!

True story: After finally kicking a nasty B&W-habit a few years ago, i got little Klipsch RP-150m as placeholders. They are wonderfully flawed, unapologetically non-neutral and in your face. Plus: everybody who hears them is like 'hey, what's that sound?'. Then I got on the audiophile hypewagon and got KEF LS50 Meta's. They changed my life. Nobody liked them, least of all me. I ended up reinstating the RP150's, and I realised then and there that I wasn't nor xould ever be a card-carrying audiophile. Just a guy who likes good sound. So: I ditched the Meta's and got Klipsch RP6000f. Had them for a year, everybody but the neighbours liked them, but we did agree on the fact that I did not need a subwoofer, ever. Yesterday my Linton's arrived. In a way I feel like I have too... I just put them on their stands approximately where the RP6000 stood, and withour any toe-in-back-and-forth they already sound amazing. Bass is a little boomy, and the soft-domes are a far cry from the eardrum-scratching hornloaded Klipsch, but I'll get over it. I'll always have the RP150's:) I got a pair of Klipsch RP6000f for sale.

Nice to know I'm not the only one under impressed with the LS50 Meta, I assume the fans just like how cool they look.

@@MrRidikolus Update: the klipsch rp6000 have sold:) I miss them for the dynamics in some rock and movies, but these Linton's are simply impressive. And that's after less than a week of ownership. The KEF's just never did anything for me. They are objectively good speakers, but if I had to sum them up in one word it would be: boring. And: not musical. IMO all Genelecs have more 'soul' than the Meta's:)

I own vintage Dentons, Lintons and Dovedales. I think they're great but I absolutely love the new Lintons. I probably wouldn't survive the release of a new Dovedale. I mean 12" bass drivers are 12" bass drivers aren't they).
