I hate people that move here from other states they ruined the neighborhoods vibe that Boston used to have. You used to be able to grow up in the city with all your family and friends now e Everybody is scattered throughout the state meanwhile the neighborhoods are gentrified with a bunch of transients and college grads who have no respect for the community or the people there

@@gij123yes! Took the words out of my mouth. I grew up back in the 80s in a more (at the time) lower-middle-class part of an Eastern MA town. We would say Hi to strangers we would pass on the sidewalk, wave hello to a car that drive through our neighborhood if we were in the yard. That was normal, common behavior. Try doing that now and not get the side-eye

The greater Boston area is a great place to raise kids. Great schools and healthcare are a big difference maker. If you come from another major city, Boston is pretty lame for night life. I moved to Boston from the Chicago area, and Boston felt like a small college town. The people arent rude, but they are cliquey AF. Everyone eill immediately ask where you are from, what city or town, and what neighborhood, just to size you up. The price of living is heartbreaking to say the least. Most Bostonians never live outside the tr-state area, so its a social distortion bubble.

Love Boston, but live in the suburbs. Definitely try to be selective about trips downtown because of traffic. Downtown Boston is a fantastic place to check out. Very clean, safe, great food, and always something going on. The people can be grumpy but they are some of the funniest and intelligent people (of course I’m generalizing) to grow bonds with, idk I guess I just get them as I have a low tolerance for BS. I also appreciate massholes for keeping idiots from running buckwild on the streets.

I find it so interesting to hear that from people outside of this region. since I am from New York and Connecticut area, moving to Boston is a DAY AND NIGHT difference (looking respectively moving from this region, this matrix of life). I found the people in Boston to be more friendly compared to Connecticut. I know, I know, not saying much, but my only rubric is: 1.) Do you say hello to me when you pass by? (and normally they will do it with a smile) ✅ 2.)Do you acknowledge me like I am human? great! ✅ That's all I care about, and yes, depending where you are in Boston (and outskirts), you will get that treatment, as the "culture" varies. I found friendly people in: 1.) Certain parts of Somerville - YES 2.) Certain parts of Cambridge - YES 3.) Medford, MA - YEP 4.) Backbay, Boston - Sure 5.) Downtown, Boston - Sure 6.) South Boston = Depends which part 7.) Roxbury = Depends which part lol 8.) Dorchester = Nope 9.) SouthEnd = Nope 10.) NorthEnd = Nope 11.) For anyone moving to Boston, there's no need to live in the city of Boston. There are suburbs of Boston (Malden, Milton, Everett, Melrose, Saugus etc) that are much more affordable, only 30 minutes drive from Boston, and can be accessed via metro. Winters can be bad, but there hasn't been a major snowstorm in the past 3 years and winters have only been getting milder. Lack of sunlight is spot on though and drivers are just bad everywhere. I've been to all over the country and compared to Boston, NYC / Miami drivers are worse. Compared to other major US cities, Boston is cleaner, less crime (not sure if it's because of education), and being a major transportation hub there are plenty of flights to pretty much anywhere in the world. IDK how you came to the conclusion that Boston hates dogs. Pretty much all of my coworkers have dogs. I'd say there are more positives than negatives. I've lived in Texas, CT, and NC for work and I'd say compared to TX, I feel a lot safer in Boston and compared to NC things are more accessible. Everything is within 2-3 hrs of drive from the city.

@JoeyandFranci Joey out of curiosity, how do you make enough as a realtor to live in Boston? I was a realtor back in 2006, & I didn't make any money at it. I was outside of of Boston though, in the Stoughton area. One thing I realized about that business, is that you have to have a social network in order to generate deals. Most of the people I grew up with, were lucky if they could pay their rent. So I didn't have that. & I wasn't involved in any social clubs. How do you get enough deals here coming from Chicago, & being so young, where you can afford afford Boston?
@JoeyandFranci
@JoeyandFranci 2 ай бұрын
This is a very good question and wanted to wait to answer it because I wanted to answer thoroughly: Being a realtor is challenging and you’re correct, your network and your ability to generate leads throughout a whole year is important. And even if someone is from Boston, those low hanging fruit of “friends” and “family” can only be a crutch for some parts of the year. I would not recommend people doing it. It’s a lot of time, heartbreak, and abuse. and if I were to move again, though I know how I would start over again, I would honestly try to do something else. My career started during the pandemic actually and i filmed empty apartments and started this KZbin channel- that actually got me my leads. Mix that with referrals + A team in my office took me on and it happens to be one of the top teams in the nation - with them I get more experience and advice as well as some leads from their client book. Boston is expensive and I’d be lying or holding back if I didn’t mention living in a dual-income household is a big help. Hope that answers your question :)

@JoeyandFranci That's interesting. I'll take your word for it. Many years ago one of my best friends was from the Chicago area, but he moved back out that way, & I lost touch with him. I appreciate you getting back to me.

Not true about roads following old cow paths. Road are crazy in Boston because they were developed to skirt around natural obstacles--rivers, swamps, etc. Much of Boston was filled in to create the city we know today, with fill from the surrounding communities. Boston's roads reflect the gradual expansion of the city into the harbor
@Cakebattered

Many of the New Englands roads existed before the automobile. They were postal routes like Rte 1 (Boston Post rd) for example.
@joshuarosen465
@joshuarosen465 Ай бұрын
That's true of all of New England, the roads follow the contours of the land. There isn't a single straight road in all of New England. The street and road names in New England also use 18th century conventions where the road is named for the town or city it is running which means it changes it's name as soon as you cross the border. For example I live in Westford. Lowell Rd in Westford becomes Westford Rd when you enter Chelmsford which is not the same as Westford Rd in Tyngsboro which becomes Depot Rd in Westford. In the Boston area you will see this effect in street numbers. If you are walking down a street in Cambridge the numbers will suddenly have a discontinuity when you cross the Somerville line. Before Google maps the expression was if you don't know where you are you don't belong there.

Real ones know the worst time of year in Boston is the summer. Winters aren't as icy as they used to be because of climate change. But it gets insanely hot and humid to the point that you won't be able to go outside in the summer.
@JoeyandFranci
@JoeyandFranci 4 ай бұрын
There’s usually a week in August where it’s 90 degrees. Otherwise, in my own personal opinion, I wouldn’t call the summers here hot, all though I feel many people around here would consider turning on the air conditioning when the temperatures hit 70 degrees. I used air conditioning in my apartment maybe 10 times in the last 4 years. But of course everyone’s tolerance for weather is different. We are in the middle of June with the average temperature over the next 10 days being about 77 degrees. I consider that comfortable. Others consider it hot.

I like snow and cold climates. If you live in the suburbs of Boston, it's not so bad. If you're in the city, you have to deal with parking issues which can be a huge headache. If you have off-street parking and don't mind clearing snow, then it's not so bad. We're in New Hampshire which is colder than Boston but we have a place in the suburbs of Boston too. More often than not, a weather report that warns of a big storm will come on and fall flat when the storm they warned about fizzles out or takes a hard right turn and remains off the coast. As obnoxious as this might be, it's still better to air on the side of caution lest you get a repeat of the blizzard of '78 or the snowpocalypse of 2015. Temps tend to fluctuate wildly as well, seeing record lows in the winter months with snow only to be followed by near 70F temps and vice-versa. There is a saying that exists in places with weird weather. "If you don't like the weather, just wait 5 minutes." If that saying didn't originate in Boston, it certainly did somewhere in New England. As for drivers? Boston drivers aren't "bad" as they tend to be "aggressive". I think most are certainly angry, but not all of them let that anger out at the wheel. I've lived in and around Boston all my life save for 2 years spent in Winter Park, FL. In the first month of living down there, I witnessed some of the most braindead acts of vehicular operation and in an amount that made me wonder why Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island don't stop insulting each other for their perceived poor driving and and ask to have most Florida driver's Licenses straight up revoked.

Hey, great video, just found your channel. You are so right about the unfriendly people here. (my word not yours). I moved here from NYC 40 years ago. I still haven't gotten over the cold stares I get from people I see in the street, public places. Even people I see every day in my neighborhood. Barely make eye contact. And if you smile and say hello they look at you like you're crazy. I think Boston is a quieter, safer, prettier place than NYC but New Yorkers despite their reputation are 100x friendlier than people in Boston or all of New England. You have to try to learn to ignore it. I decide NOT to be like them and I still smile and say hello, if they don't respond... & *^%$ them!

As someone who lived in MA all my life, you’re pretty much spot on lol 😂 The downside is I don’t make much money and living with family. But I’m planning on doing an online degree on Computer Science and eventually Cybersecurity, so I’m hoping I’ll get a decent income one day. I may also do an AI certification just in case. But for now making less than $100K and living with family is pretty rough. I pretty much rely on taking the T but I am working on the driver’s license. I’ve taken Ubers and I saw how crazy people can be on the road, so it made learning to drive pretty hard, but I will make it there eventually.

If the burbs of CT RI NH had an affordable public transit we could effectively "live" in Boston, while residing out in the boondocks. Daily suburb influxers would bring crazy money and do things like STEM training and dance and music lessons and theatre and going to restaurants. Homeschooling at the Boston public library even though you live in fentanyl Fitchburg. Longy school of music for kids from Gardner or Athol. Public transit to the new England burbs would create a Renaissance for Boston.

Actually, the roads in metro Boston were not due to the cow paths, but the layered approach of pushing the shoreline through landfill. There used to be many more islands that composed the now-contiguous Boston wharfs and seaport. That said, Route 1 through Saugus is 100% the descendent of cow paths 😂 Also - thank you for calling out the insta-honks. 5:17. It kinda depends on the environment too. I grew up in Dorchester, which was a hood part of Boston. Naturally, there, people are more closed off. But when I moved to Quincy, which was a higher income suburban neighborhood, people walking down the street would just be like, "How you doing?" I remember the first time this happened. I started looking around to see if they were talking to someone behind me. It took a while for me to get used to it. I also experienced this a lot in college, which makes sense. There are a lot of people not from this area. And I suspect a lot of people were just more comfortable to be themselves once they got out of high school

I’m from Boston and I’m not a bad driver, but I am a no nonsense and impatient driver. I don’t like to wait when it comes to driving and most of us in Boston are the same way. Most of the people from here drive like they’re running late. A lot of us drive as though if we don’t drive fast, we’ll miss something. I’ve been known to be running late most of the time. So that’s why I’m always driving impatiently and fast. So maybe most of us are usually running late. I’m not a bad driver though. You have to have skills to drive the way I drive. Yeah if someone is taking too long, I will cut them off. If I’m running late for work, I might run a light or two and people that drive under 30 mph driving me nuts! Even if the speed limit is 20. yeah we’re really impatient and we will cuss you out. It’s so bad. I got a gun pulled on me during traffic frustrations. The driver was so impatient he pulled a gun on me. Yeah we don’t play when it comes to driving. You can’t be stalling when you’re driving in these streets. Please don’t get in front of anyone going 20 because they might freak out and don’t get behind the wheel in Boston and act like you don’t know where you’re going or what you’re doing, especially in rush hour traffic. If you can make a move, make that move because no one‘s going to wait. They will flip out on you.

Bostonians are kind but not nice. We fight for one another but we don't chat. Also, the cow paths isn't right. It's just because Boston is older than cars. The city was built for people and horses. By the time cars became popular the roads couldnt be changed much without demolishing buildings. The government actually tried to make a bunch of highways. After the first one the citizens protested and were able to block more being built. The MBTA will have shutdowns of different lines all year. Biking is often a good option since Boston is mostly fairly flat.

Yeah I drive in/to Manhattan several times per year. I will say the difference I experience is that Boston drivers really don’t care to just turn when they want to, left or right from any lane and will blow through red lights. New York drivers love to just switch lanes into any little space in front of you when traffic is literally going 0 mph at the height of rush hour and it absolutely makes no difference at all in how quickly they reach their destination, but they just keep switching lanes just to keep their car moving haha

As a Miami common visitor, a city bigger than Boston, I don't think the host realizes just how bad mass transit is in America, on average. It made for good humor in the video, but Boston's T is regularly counted as the second or third best mass transit in the nation. Yeah, it sucks, but compared to what city in America? New York, that's one. But the list ends there. Like Miami's consists of just a single line with trains like every 20 minutes and it is number 8. We need to do much better. In Boston sure. But at least you are starting from a much higher vantage point than most cities. If you are thinking of moving to Boston and don't want to own a car, then Boston is probably as good as any city in the U.S. save New York because of its mass transit.

As someone who has lived in chicago and frequents New Yorks subway system multiple times every year, and Europe subway systems, It’s not even close. many chicago subways come every 2 min during during rush hour. They are fast and so is NYC. You can get anywhere faster with a train than to drive. I do know that Bostons subway somehow makes it as a top 3- which is surprising to me. I think it’s behind New York, chicago, and dc, maybe even behind Philly. The T is always delayed, moves so slow. 25 mph. The green line is a trolley- let’s not pretend it’s not. Faster to bike in nearly every case, and sometimes it’s even faster to walk according to a Harvard study. Chestnut hill to back bay, much faster to drive anytime of day. Why does it take 15 min to drive to the airport from Fenway and nearly 45 min by public transportation? How do people who live in south Boston get to work in longwood medical center? Hint, it’s not convenient. Why does it take 45 min to walk from seaport to TD garden but transportation to td garden is also 45 min from there? My wife took the t to the airport yesterday from Kendall square- 45 minutes. Driving it would have only been 10 min. Never met anyone from New York or Chicago who thinks Bostons transit system is better. It’s always people from New England or from towns that don’t even have a subway that is just happy to experience one in Boston. And as someone who goes to Miami 2-3 times every winter, I agree Miami’s system is not ahead of Boston. It’s nice that it is free though. I only criticize the T because it could be so much better.

I take the blue, then green line from the airport to my brother's a lot. The congested parts of the green line are underground so I don't think it is fair to call it a trolley. And even when above ground, it gets rail which cars can't drive on. One time I missed the train and didn't want to wait the 7 minutes and tried to run and catch up. I wasn't able to. I have never been on Chicago's subway but I sort of get the impression it does not feel as safe. Maybe I am wrong about that. But if you look at ridership, Boston and Chicago are about the same whereas Boston is a much smaller city. So I suspect Boston relies on it's T more than Chicago relies on mass transit. This helps make Boston such a walkable city. But I am not writing to say Boston's subway is better than Chicago's. I just think you have the T on the wrong video!!! It belongs in the "good things" video. What you are saying, is like saying, don't move to San Diego because the weather there is not as good as Hawaii's . Yes, New York's is better, but that is probably the only one which is definitely better. The viewer deserves to be told that, joking aside, it is way way way better than most big cities in the U.S., and that Boston is a top 5, maybe a top 2, big city to live in if you really don't want a car. Maybe list it in both videos, and you can keep the humor.
@JoeyandFranci

@@jlamm2223443 the thing is, transportation is supposed to be faster than driving. You probably could have driven to your destination faster. That should be how you grade how good public transportation is. the green line stops at at green lights sometimes and has to stop at red lights. That’s why I consider it a trolley. But it’s perspective it’s opinion, you calling boston a big city, personally I would never say that because Ive lived in a city of 2.3 million. Boston is 25 largest city in terms of population like 650,000. But yeah you’re entitled to your opinion, I’m speaking from my experience living in 3 major cities. If compared to European cities, sure, Boston is bad. If compared to the time it takes in a car, sure, Boston is bad. But how many metro systems in the U.S. are then good? I just comment so that people thinking of moving to Boston realize the T is very good compared to what one can reasonably expect for a U.S. city its size. I would say that quite a few people would give their right arm for something half as good as the T in Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Detroit, Tampa. Jacksonville, . Nashville, ... I think this is what gives Philly, Boston, New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., some of their appeal. Compared to cities elsewhere in the country ....

Further, if you're in trouble and ask for help, you'll get it. It's true that Boston driving habits are different. Two skills to master: 1) The "Massachusetts Left" (where you turn left at a traffic light before the oncoming traffic gets there). 2) Take nothing personally. People are just trying to get to where they're going despite a million obstacles. Watch and learn from the cab drivers, and remember the golden rule of Boston driving: "Me first"

I lived in Boston, Cambridge, Newton and some of the surrounding suburbs, for 90% of my life. It’s just not worth it, unless you’re in college/grad school, or an early career professional. Once you hit 30ish, it gets old. It’s not sustainable to live here for most people. Rent and housing is not far behind SF and NYC. Mostly privileged radical democrats who think the whole country should think like them or else be exterminated, the angriest people you’ll ever meet, the driving is insane and the traffic will ruin your day. It’s a very aggressive place, essentially. Winter and summer weather can get so extreme for half of the seasons you cannot go outside for more than 5 minutes. Spring and fall are short, but it can get really nice for about 3-4 months of the year. Fall is gorgeous though. If you are absolutely loaded and have kids and you can tolerate the cons, I think the metro west suburbs are very satisfying. Two items: first, the roads are not quite wide enough for the number of lanes. In winter, you lose half to 3/4 of a lane to piles of snow. (Pretty sure that's why there are so many SUVs). Second, cyclists slalom in and out of traffic. It's both terrifying and impressive. Anyway, I don't live in the city anymore....I'm outside of the 495 loop and life is good. 😂
