There are plenty of reasons to enjoy living in Newport News, like great parks, nearby beaches, and moderate housing prices, but in today's video we'll talk about all the reasons you WON'T like living in Newport News. These are all in the eye of the beholder, though, and as bad some things are, they're way better than other locations, but can be worse than others.
WEATHER: Hot, humid summers. Bone chillingly cold winters. Wet Springs. But Fall is amazing!
PROPERTY TAXES: $1.22 per $1000 puts Newport News $0.32 over the national average
ALLERGIES: Pollen, pollen, and more pollen!
TUNNEL TRAFFIC: The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel is the absolute worst. The Monitor Merrimac is better, but still not amazing.
AWFUL NIGHT LIFE: This town goes to bed at 10pm. If you want to party, you'll have to head to Norfolk or Virginia Beach, or up to Richmond
BAD FOOD SCENE: There are a handful of good restaurants, but not nearly enough. Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg are all lightyears better
NO CULTURE: Strip malls and chain restaurants combined with a transient population don't help create a unifying culture and character
BUGS: Spiders and mosquitos galore!
OLD HOUSING: Mostly 60's houses and early 90's. We have very little housing built in the last 20 years

newport news does have somewhat of a night life. although most people from other places who come here would not be comfortable due to prejudices. nothing stops someone from going to the alley downtown haha

hahahaha The six minute mark where you talk about rain just hit me. I was walking across Ft Eustis as a kid, and literally lost my shoes in a part of a field that was soaked and soggy from all the rain. the Mud just sucked the shoes right off my feet.

I live in Newporr News. I agree with most of your video, but unless someone is from a warm climate, I wouldn't say our winters are bone-chilling. It was very cold in the 60's and 70s. We hardly have snow where we used to. I haven't needed to wear gloves or scarves much the past few winters.

newport news is blessed from hurricanes ,tornadoes ,flooding its more of a family town ,if you what to party go across the water were its wild an crazy . newport news is more of a quiet town an we like to try to keep it that way ,

I agree! Newport News is situated really nicely away from major weather related problems. And people looking for a city with a big fun night life will be better off in Norfolk and VB or up in Richmond, for sure.

Thanks for video, I had to agree and laugh along. My niece and hubby are in the military and want us all all to move from NY since we're close-knit. It's hard to get food after 9 and very little nightlife. A lounge/restaurant with live music is a good alternative if I can find one and I do enjoy the outdoor evening free concerts at City Center. Just read about more free concerts at Riverview Landing area by the beach. Cheap old gold fixtures not the cool new ones. 😅 I guess Yorktown is similar but better?

I'm from Hampton and have lived all over Newport News from the hoods in downtown to the condos in Denbeigh. I lead Neighborhood Watch Programs. I lived there years ago and spoke with Sheriff Gabriel Morgan about new crime initiatives for the area. He was NOT having any of it! He doesn't want crime to be reduced in Newport News! He would rather it increase for his own job security! As long as people like him occupy positions of authority, the crime rates will continue to climb in that area.

It’s pretty scenic which is nice. The crime in Newport News is awful though. Keeps getting worse. I got attacked at Patrick Henry mall minding my own business. The weather is nice but I feared for my safety way too much. Saw a fight at the Dairy Queen on oyster point and Warwick over a parking space. Newport News is crazy

I thonk this is the creep who called zoning on me for a minor infraction because he had a house listed across the street. Then he sold it to someone who weren't good neighbors in this nicely diverse neighborhood. They left shortly thereafter and the house has changed hands several times. Each time bringing our neighborhood ❤down. down and didn't

Having lived in Newport News you failed to mention crime. Crime is pretty high in Newport News and not just in the area by the shipyard. It's pretty much everywhere. From Denbigh all the way down. That is the biggest deterrent.

In the mid 80's to late 90's there were over 260 open air drug markets in downtown Newport News alone. It peatty much went in doors after that but you could find it in the 600 blocks of 40th, 41st and 42nd street total shit hole but these blocks are cleared out now that Mr Biggers is dead. The 500 blocks of 14th st through 21street is a shit hole to but thats where the crack was at. Glad im not working there anymore.
