I'm going into my second year with my business and found last summer at my first market that handing out take home samples of my whipped body butter and soaps made a significant difference and brought customers to me. I'd hand them out to the people who were 'just looking' or were just passing by my booth. In the glassine bag would be a small sample (end cut) of my cp soap or a small plastic 2 oz container with a squirt of body butter, and a list of the ingredients and the fragrance along with my business information. It never failed that I would always get several phone calls or messages on Facebook for soap or body butter sales. Even this Christmas sales season, I slipped a hand balm sample into the bag of one of my market customers and it resulted in the sales of two hand balms. I love giving out samples where ever I can to pump up sales and because I, as a customer, love getting samples too!

Samples are definitely a great way to build that customer base! We did this too when we first started selling in person! Wish we couldve continued in this past market season, but hopefully 2021 we can start doing it again! They 100% helped with sales.

Sample hand-outs are what kept me in business for more than 20+ year's. It makes a difference especially when you're competing with so many. I did every bazaar at church's, fire house's, farmer's markets, even outside my front door on the lawn during the good months of weather, and it paid off. There was no social media, I did every give away I could and spent a lot of time going to different state's near me & in time I had a business of by mouth only and invites to every open house, bazaar, and people calling me. Hang in there.

I came across this video on very a discouraging day in my brand new soap business. @@mybestideas1 wrong! I had a soap business over 20 years ago, and I was the first person in my area to introduce handmade soaps. This was when KZbin had very little channels available and I learned mainly from library books. At the peak of my business, I would sell well over $1,000 in a 6 hour craft show. I had over 25 goat milk based scented soaps, a line of unscented, along with lotion bars to match. I had to sell my business due to health reasons. It is a very physical craft to make. But if you pay attention to detail and have an excellent recipe, great customer service, you can do it.

I've been selling for about 5 months. I really only sold my first soap to someone other than family and friends three months ago. And the selling is definitely increasing. It went from $24 the first month to $315 last month. And it would have been more if I had been able to go to every weekend at the markets (thanks for the scare covid). Joining the market was the best thing I ever did. I'm looking at joining another one on Saturdays and then the other on Sunday. It's worth it.

Hello @moiraesfate I was wondering if you need a license to sell soap products ?
@moiraesfate1
@moiraesfate1 3 жыл бұрын
@@jessicachavez9470 That depends on where you live. In the US, I need a business license and tax ID's for where I'm planning on selling, and for my parish (also called a county) I needed to register my DBA. I also need to comply with federal laws regarding making and selling products. In Canada, the rules are slightly more restrictive and you will have a bit harder time finding ingredients, but it isn't much different from the US. In the UK, the laws are deep and involved including a need for an official government assessment for your recipes and ingredients. So you will need to contact your local government to find out.

First of all I really appreciated you saying that you are an introvert, because so am I. I started my soap business at the end of 2019 which was a pretty rough year to start. All the shows I had planned in 2020 were canceled and I have struggled to do much sense. I have my first show coming up and I am terrified 😂 I had a full on panic attack where I felt like a big old fat man was sitting on my chest! lol. But I absolutely love making soap. It just lights me up like nothing ever has before, so like you said there’s hard things and scary things but you just push through it. Also you just seem so charismatic and easy-going and fun to talk to… I’m trying to remember how my friends and family see me not how I see myself… And this is just an interesting note, my husband is also a type one diabetic, but he wasn’t diagnosed until a year or two ago. I didn’t know until then that you can get it as an adult. Thank you for sharing. It’s so encouraging.

Three years is a rule for ANY business.I’ve spent 45 years in the horticultural field, managing nurseries ,country clubs,Including my own business of landscape consultation. The first year you might find yourself losing, the second year you break even ,the third you turn a profitable margin. Even in college courses use this as a rule of thumb. That was my experience in college double majoring. This is my first year making soap I’m on the borderline of breaking even. I’m not worried about it. I wouldn’t have been on this endeavor expecting to get rich,overnight .I’m happy with my customers and their loyalty, social media being as it may.. Word of mouth is everything.

I'm a type one as well and heard his pump go off and knew what it was😂 type one is so rare so when you hear someone has it you feel connected in a way at least that's how I always feel. So neat im just starting a soap business and thought that was neat that he has type one as well.

Seeing your target market in action .... love that point .... And your husband talking about the sale not ending with someone purchasing or not purchasing from you at the market because they could know someone getting married or they could need party favors or they might on a little boutique in town that they want to sell your stuff out… So just because somebody says no thank you right now or doesn’t buy something doesn’t mean that they’re not sellable

I’ve been in this limbo of starting a new Instagram. My old soaping Instagram has been inactive for 6 months (2,600 followers) as I’ve been rebranding and carefully thinking about my vision for my soaping. I’m glad it wasn’t a crazy idea to make a new Instagram lol. I just want a complete fresh start. I’m pretty sure my followers just liked my product photography over my actual soap!

I want to start my little soap business up again. I went door to door when I was 25 with my handmade soap and I made a lot for someone my age. I think part of it was people wanting to help out because I was young but I really miss it.

I'm so glad I found this video! Thanks for sharing your wisdom Jerika and Kale! I have a lot of work to do but hearing your experiences and wisdom I feel much better about starting my business. I make glass beads and I would like to add soap bars too. :-) I was sad that I am not selling yet but it's only been a few months. Thanks for the inspiration to keep going!

Thank you. I've hit a real speed bump and things are slowing down since the pandemic. I'm a people person so the cancellation of all my markets has really hurt and I've been feeling really low. My daughter has given the same suggestions you have. I am starting my Organic line to add to my existing Natural Eco Friendly line. Just keep going, she said. Thanks for the boost of confidence. Have a BUBBLY day!

Thank you so much for addressing instagram, comparing to others, and allowing for time. It took so long for me to realize that comparing myself and my business to others on instagram/youtube/facebook was actually hindering me and not allowing myself and my business to grow. I've noticed that many businesses actually take 7 years to reach their full potential, which is a long time and most people would give up.

Exactly! Give it time! Give yourself some grace to learn and grow. Think of it as a process! No one becomes successful overnight.
