Sean I agree 100 with you gear comments. Unfortunately i suffered a heat stroke a few years back and it changed my internal heat controls. I am now super heat sensitive now. I live in the new mexico desert. 100 most of the summer. Ive tried several full face helmets and mesh jackets, they dont work for me. Im not willing to give up riding so i use a skull type helmet and a leather vest. I do wear gloves but that all I can handle. So i just tey to drive extra defensive. When its cooler I wear all the gear. I am a safety professional so hearing your point on the others depend on you is a great message. I enjoy your videos. Thanks

I rode to Borrego Springs when it was 104 F, and I used a different type of cooling vest. It has those crystals that gel up and soak up water (like diapers), and was also wearing an close-fitting "Under Armour" type top (also soaked in water), and it felt great! I had a mesh, motorcycle jacket on. It felt almost like air conditioning. :) Brought along a big ziplock back already with some water in it to reload up on water. This was a while ago, so I can't remember how long it was effective for before it needed to soaked again. I'm going to say 1.5 hours.

My first bike was a 1988 Shadow VLX too. I sold it with 90K miles and still ran like a champ 16 years ago and got a 2005 BMW r1200gs. I miss that old VLX for around town and the sound! but hated that small gas tank and only 4 gears on the highway sucked. Not one problem with it except having to change the fork seals a few many times. Oil change and go!

The military uses ratchet straps to secure lighter loads. Ratchet straps can withstand huge amounts of force if they are used correctly. For our vehicles, if we trailer them we normally use very large chains with huge anchor points on the trailer. . Tanks and the like would snap ratchet straps like a twig by shifting a bit. If you have authentic straps then its a weird off yellow color most of the time. The tank straps you mention are solid for bikes though!!!

I love rat bikes and have had two. Both were somewhat rattier than that one though. One didn't even have a gas tank. The tank had a hole rusted in it, so I took a 2 gallon air tank, welded a fitting on it, put a filler cap on it, bolted it to the luggage rack, and ran a fuel hose to the carbs. The seat came off a piece of playground equipment. It was a 1980 Suzuki GS450L. I threw the sidecovers away, built home made fenders and chain guard, put a tall sissy bar on it made of copper pipe and rubber hose. And bolted to the badly dinged up and rusted headlight housing was a 6" long plastic rat with a cigarette butt in it's mouth.

I customized my VT600 in a completely different way. I put a 70's era Windjammer on it along with the matching Vetter saddlebags and trunk. It's just like the 1982 GL500 Silverwing I bought back then. I get compliments about how good it looks everywhere I go. When I bought the bike it had just 1,400 miles on it. After putting a new rear sprocket with two extra teeth on it riding at speed on the super slab is no big deal. I ride with other riders on their car engined touring bikes with no problems and my bike is so much lighter and easier to handle.

I always think about how motorcycling has evolved, especially in North America. A while back a 750cc bike was a "big" bike. Now a 750 is considered generally as entry level. Crazy. Years ago I had a Shadow 500, my good buddy had a LTD 454. Even these weren't considered entry level. My buddy's dad bought a Shadow 750 and we thought that was crazy cool. I don't remember 500 to 750cc hikes ever being considered small. What happened?

You seem to be finding a lot of old classic bikes that we all used to ride in the UK. Most of our bikes were 250cc 400cc 500cc or 750cc anything above a 500cc was considered a big bike, and you have to remember Barry Sheen used to win world class races on a 750cc but they even race 125cc motorcycles which go over 110 mph. All the street 125cc motorcycles I have ridden have managed to reach speeds of around 80 mph. But then in the UK we use good fuel the lowest grade is 75 compared to your highest at 70. A big bike just means a more comfortable stable ride at higher speeds but a well put together small bike can do a pretty good job.
