This video illustrates what I've been saying about car reviewers for years. They're only good for a year or two, still excited about new cars, and able to express their enthusiasm without clouding it with supercars experiences. Once someone get behind the wheel of the very best of the very best, or at least the fastest of the fastest, it's only natural to look at other cars has a little less. That would be fine if you're speaking to an audience of fellow car reviewers or people who have driven everything and can relate. Most audiences however, consists of dreamers like myself, who wants to know just how great it is to get behind the wheel of a car like this one, 400 horsepower, convertible, mid-engine Porsche, and loving it for what it is and not at what it is not. Very few reviewers resist the jading that is quite natural.

There’s another perspective though. I’ve owned a Boxster and a 911 and will be buying something newer in the next year or two. Eligible vehicles were a 911, a Spyder and a GT4. I want a manual transmission for the driving experience and I thought a Spyder was the perfect car for me but the long ratios are really making me think twice about it, it’s a valid issue if you want to play on those medium speed curvy roads. Rowing between second and third while staying in the power band but not driving too fast is the sweet spot experience I’m after. I’m really starting to think that if I want that crisp mid-engine handling with the kind of driving engagement I’m looking for that I’m going to have a Boxster S in my driveway. I’ve driven the base Boxster with the T4 and couldn’t care less about the engine sound, they are awesome to drive and have more mid range torque than my 911 S. My 911 S sounds awesome between 5k and 7k but it’s not practical to drive like that. The midrange push from the turbo actually makes for a more fun daily driver. So these little details will matter a lot to someone that has owned cars like this before. What is important I think is to bring it out in a way that is factual and technical and doesn’t just sound like elitist whining.

oooh Sam, harsh words about the Gen 1 Spyder, my dads first dip of his toe into the world of Porsche, it was fantastic, really quite aural and alive, it had bags of personality over a standard boxster, he used it as his daily, took it on numerous runs through Europe, down to Southern Italy on one run, over the Stelvio pass ( on a day that had more cycles than cars so it was a steady drive!), the roof wasnt even that much of a pain after a few goes it all worked, he wishes he had have kept it forever, but alas Porsche wanted it back to help get him the next car, which he dutifully bought, which then led him up the garden path for a Speedster, they took him to launch night at hotel, let him sit in one, spec a very personalised one, then he asked to pay the deposit and was told "Geoff, this car isnt for you...." bit harsh I thought, and I know where I would have told the sales team to go, but he stuck with them, now has his allocation on a cherry red Targa Heritage edition coming in the autumn.

I guess my problem with cylinder deactivation is that it adds unnecessary weight and complication to the engine and the engine isn't inherently balanced when running on 3 cylinders. Without that, and if the body was full aluminium, i reckon they couldve lost 100kg. seems quite heavy at 1500kg. carbon tub would be even better but then ur into 911 turbo prices

She was impressed at my Kreskin impression though I’ve been a big fan of the channel for years. Anyway, she picked it up yesterday, insisted I drive it home as she was anxious about taking it on the freeway. I found it’s handling fantastic as well as the throttle response. I have 7 classic Porsches and love it’s refinement. For her, the car will be fantastic for our Porsche events and drives as she is a bit tentative. The car looks and performs beautifully and hats off to Sam as he was apparently the deciding factor in her making the jump. Love the channel - keep up the great work in putting us in cars and a mindset we would otherwise not experience.

Your comments are spot on. I have been driven a Spyder 718 for two years on race tracks and left some of the Cayman GT4 behind me. What a joy, a convertible overtaking a true race track car. By the way, there is a video with the famous German, Walter Röhrl, comparing a 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman on the race track. Both equally fast! If you challenge the car and drive it at its limit, what a great performance. How often can you do this on a regular road?! Now, after two years, I am going to trade my 718 Spyder for a 981 Spyder. Indeed, I got „bored“ a little bit, as you have mentioned in your clip. Struggling for a while before making the decision, your video convinced to change the gen 3 for a gen 2 model. The 981 provides you with way more emotions, particularly because of its sound and but also its agility. With a light motor tuning (in the 911 its has 400 HP), the car has equal performance as the 718 Spyder. Last but not least, on the race track I am going to use an older Cayman 981 GTS which has respectable performance and is more designed with a fixed roof for this sort of driving. Sorry for my English. Greetings from Switzerland, PD

Sam I hope your headline got the hits you wanted. You are the only reviewer that gave an overarching negative review. Good strategy for clicks. As a former Ferrari 360 gated manual Spyder -and now a new owner of a Porsche Spyder you are way off - Influencer vs professional reviewer I guess. I have had many sports cars and this car is brilliant and exciting car. Corners like no other car I’ve owned. They will have to pry the steering wheel from my hands. This is a keeper.

Been waiting for this. Best looking Porsche for many years. The only Porsche in the current line up i want. I would change the exhaust though. And i'd probably get a dark red metallic with tan interior. Haven't driven one though. But i feel that most modern sportscars are a bit boring. They are so good that it gets a bit soul less. There's not much room for passion in them any more. Nice video as usual. Keep up the great work.

Considered this, but I’m going to stick with my Carrera T which just hits above 62mph in 2nd gear and sounds amazing without any GPF’s

You’ll always have to mod/tune a 718 or Cayman yourself to compensate for Porsche’s sandbagging to protect the 911. A new exhaust and gearbox mod are totally worth the cost, and it’s one of the few cars where you’ll recoup a lot of the money spent on modding upon resale as everyone knows they’re essential. When set up properly, this is as good as anything on public roads. I’ll definitely look at a lightly used one next year.

Like Matt Farrah said, get the aftermarket gear set, and a exhaust to get rid of those filters and BOOM! This car would be fan-freaking-tastic! Great video again Sam👍🏻

BY FAR the most honest review of the GT4. As someone that has my name down on one I'm really interested to hear your thoughts on the sound which for me defines a sports car (I also have a 458 and a 981 Boxster). I can't help but feel that I too will be disappointed with the GT4 experience... It really feels like the golden age of sports cars is behind us. Feel like crying.

I know the case of a colleague who used to own a 981 Cayman GTS and now owns a 718 Cayman GT4 (exactly the same engine and specs as the 718 Spyder) and is really happy with the car, including the exhaust noise and doesn't think about changing it in any way. And I'm not talking about a one-hour test on a couple of roads, but thousands of miles. I think the meehhh are stupid and ridiculous in a serious test.

wacky rc absolutely. There is not another Porsche that does B roads. The 911 is far too big - that’s why I sold my 992.1 C4S for a 718 spyder

I haven't driven the 718 Spyder yet but spent a decent amount of time in a 981 Boxster Spyder, and I agree with Sam on this. It does have the long gearing as well, but I really enjoyed that car even at slow speeds. It crackles and burbles, and is just fun and enjoyable to cruise in. I think the 718 Spyder looks fantastic and applaud Porsche for still making it in this day and age, and frankly I don't think there's much for sale now that will match that experience at that price point. But in my mind, I'd find a really good 981 Boxster Spyder at 70k-ish and pocket the rest.

I owned a 981 Spyder, went 911 - first a 991.2 then a 992.1 C4S and replaced with 718 Spyder which is the best Porsche I have ever owned and driven. The 981 Spyder was nice but I never wanted to go and drive it as much as I do my 718. Nor did I clock up 1000 miles within a week because it drove so brilliantly. Check out Janko Linds very latest video on Yellow 718 GT4 to understand which car to pick.
