Same, I started my digital art journey drawing with the mouse, years after, I saved enough money to buy my very first tablet Wacom Intuos Small, and 4 years later, I upgraded it to a HUION HS611. It’s a screenless tablet that was around $80 usd when I got it if I remember correctly and it has been a joy to work with plus it’s super light and about the same length and width as my laptop so it can just sit on my keyboard plus the software for customizing the buttons is super easy to use and Linux compatible.

Thank you Marlene! This guide is pretty useful! I was just looking for a tablet I could take with me to classes, draw and also take notes on but have a really tough time picking which should I get. I really don't like Apple but ipads seemed to be the best option for me. The thing I'm most concerned about is the availability and pricing of drawing programs on them. Apple seems to have a one time purchase with procreate, which is good but most other teblets make me choose between krita(which I don't really like) or csp(which has only subscriptions on Android devices, which sucks)
@Yominokun1Ай бұрын
Pick the one which you prefer. You can get used to any tool you use, and a tablet and the software is just that: a tool (of course if you're talking somewhat decent programs, but i've seen amazing things done with Paint even). I use Krita, and it works well, though the UI and shortcuts are clearly for use with a desktop PC or laptop. An important thing to be honest about to yourself, is howmany of the features you regularly use, and for me just drawing and some nice brushes are all i need for now.

I've had my Wacom One (screen tablet) for 3 years now, and I don't see a need to switch or upgrade to anything else. Seeing and using the large tablets did make me want one at first, but I realized like you did that smaller is better in this case
@synraxxАй бұрын
How is your Wacom One holding up? I started on one and used it for around 2 years and I loved that thing, the screen however got insanely scratched up after drawing on the same small area for those 2 years so I recently ended up upgrading to a Cintiq Pro 27.
@magictriangle6878Ай бұрын
@@synraxx Yea, mine has a rough spot. When it's off and the light hits the screen right, it's visible. But when it's on and I'm drawing, I don't really notice it unless the nib is worn. Yours seems to have gotten it much worse than mine to have to replace it.

Also, commenting on the smartphone users' artists. Some actually learned how to draw on their phones before receiving a tablet. That was my case in 2016 until I switched from an art tablet to an iPad Pro. I will say having an Ipad is for traveling purposes; having an art table is significantly better and has more access to programs to enhance your art if you're looking for that. Edit: Drawing on your phone isn't that bad, Ibis got your back.

I used to draw for 10 years on a screenless tablet. :) It's a good experience; the only downside is that you might take 2-weeks (~ish) to get adjusted to the new hand-eye coordination skill. That is - drawing without looking at your hand. This might be a bit discouraging in the beginning, especially if you didn't draw traditionally before, but make sure to trust the process! This February, I was gifted an iPad and my joy for art sparkled again! Majorly! You would learn any tool/program with time, but the ability to draw from anywhere, and pack it with me when i travel is amazing, and what i cherish most. Take everything into consideration, and be patient with yourself. :) Nothing that seems scary at first actually is when you put some time into adjusting and practice!
@meganferguson1291Ай бұрын
I draw on my phone but I am a beginner. I just find it more accessible because pulling out my laptop and tablet feels like a chore just to draw and I like being able to hit the undo button and pencil doesn't erase nearly good enough for my liking.

I personally like the 'general-use' mobile tablet option. My experience is with android ones (I actually upgraded from a 2020 s6lite to a s9FE this year. Love that 'responsive' is now a word that lives in the same post-code, lol) but I like that they are both e-reader and drawing device, as well as the simple factor that they offer a level of focus and isolation I just don't get with a tablet attached to my computer proper. The main issue I've seen with the mobile tablets is the different pen technologies in use, and the sometimes lack of support the cheaper tablets have for pens of any sort. That and that trying to find the right app on them for what you want to do is dicey, especially if you don't want to pay any money. Although Krita is a thing on android now, so that's likely less an issue than it used to be. Krita might be fairly 'basic' but it has all the core features and iirc the android version has support for brush packs like the desktop version.
@Yominokun1Ай бұрын
Krita is far from basic, but it is a bit more limited on tablets since it's pretty much a port from desktop/laptop windows devices. Attach a keyboard and it becomes a decent option, if you use a lot of shortcuts. Hell, it's generally a decent option, just a bit more hassle if you want specific functions a lot of the time (which i don't).
@jtnachos16Ай бұрын
@@Yominokun1 Meh, I don't use a ton of layers in my stuff, so I often am not using a lot of the 'advanced functions'. Even in the case I do want them, I'm not a person that's really bothered by having to use the UI, so long as the UI is decent to begin with. I actually miss when you had a handful of options that then opened lists, instead of everything needing it's own window or screen the way a lot of modern UI goes. I feel like a lot of the distaste for Krita UI tends to be 'I'm used to other program', or 'I don't want to learn it and evaluate it after I know how it works'. You see a lot of the same with Blender and a lot of other free software. 'X is different than insert mainstream here, therefore it sucks' is the source of a lot of complaints.

Greeting Guys and Gals. Time for a funny story with MY Drawing Tablet. I got my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite for my college classes in Digital Art and Media. HOWEVER, the moment I started the classes, I came to learn that I would using Abobe Art programs... which are NOT compatible with my Tablet at all. Thus, less than 2 months in, I had to drop out of the class due to falling behind. Moral of the Story? Make sure the programs you will be using are compatible with your tech! On the bright side, I did find an Art Program called Krita that WAS compatible with my new tablet. Therefore, I was able to continue on my digital art journey without too much hassle. And in case you guys are wondering, the tablet itself was about 400 USD for the low GB version. So, choose what you are buying wisely. Have an awesome day. Peace out!

Gonna butt in there, Maelstrom; BEGINNERS!! Art comes from you, not from your impliments. What ever type of pen/pencil/stylus/painbrush you use to lay down those lines, you are still the one giving them life! Having fancy gear wont magically make you better at art. I've been drawing for about 6 years now (feels like much longer haha) and own an iPad, aswell as a wacom intuos which I pair with a hamy down laptop. Software also doesn't matter; I use procreate on my iPad, and paused my clipstudio paint subscription because I started using Magma, which is a website! Your art and preferred medium will 1000% fluctuate, so focus on supporting yourself outside of art, as well as enjoying the journey of creating
