I was fortunate to get the 1972 Skyline RLC last week but honestly it was certainly stressful not knowing beforehand if I was going to be able to get it. So yes I purchased the RLC Overdrive subscription and I’m very glad I did. I’m thrilled to have the confidence that I will receive guaranteed every RLC drop this year. Great video!

I'm hearing a total of 10K Overdrive subs will be available. If true, multiply that by the $99 fee and that's $990K. Would not that money be better spent to improve the fight against bot accounts? Mattel won't do _that,_ because it's money flowing out, not in, for them. It would help level the playing field, which benefits the individual consumer of RLC drops. This move, coupled with the timing in which the $99 fee does not even cover a full calendar year, leaves a bad taste with me. I don't buy RLCs and if I want to spend that much per car, other options exist. Collect how you will, and keep it FUN. My guess is, chasing these extra shiny cars is becoming a lot less fun. I honestly agree with you. It does put a bad taste in my mouth and I was very upset about it. But these new RLCS are becoming more and more popular. I hate to play the devils advocate but Having an automatic purchase made for you without you doing anything is nice. It’s like a subscription service. So I see both good and bad with it.

Actually the membership pays for itself, especially with what’s coming out this year. We have the r34, supra, rx7, McLaren, pagani and the baricuda. Those are awesome castings and I guarantee you those will be above $40 plus shipping on eBay. Don’t even get me started with the supra and rx7. But that is just my opinion.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of fallout occurs because of Overdrive. Resellers will not be happy that Overdrive is essentially taking away its primary customers. This may result in resale prices dropping for the releases of 2024 after March 15. I’m worried that hyped releases may be sold out within a minute going forward. I have 3 months remaining in my membership. What happens in that time will dictate if I renew. I may switch over to Mini GT and other Japanese brands.

How about this option. If you miss out on a car don't pay hundreds to someone on eBay for it just go without it. It is just a toy car after all. I've been a RLC member for years and have missed several cars I wanted but the sun still rose the next morning. It won't kill to go without a toy and if no one buys on eBay then people who sell on eBay will stop buying from RLC. No demand equals no profits.

For me it works fine to be honest I love to collect them and sometimes I see my self buying them on eBay for 2 times or more for a casting o lost so buying 100$ to secure my rlc is good because now I won’t pay resellers all the time

I’m in New Zealand so I’m out, but in my opinion, it’s a no brainer,….I would if I could and of course they are going to bill you the $99 in advance, how else would they do it. The R34 will be worth $300 in no time so you’ve paid for you subscription for a couple of years in advance with just one car. As for collectors like myself (53yo) who have grown up with HW and been collecting since, this is a win that basically pays for itself and is well worth it in turns of the headaches that scalpers create for collectors. For one, scalpers can’t benefit from marking up and selling an Overdrive membership for more than 100% like they do with everything else. Plus it makes it easier for collectors that work a job to where they can’t always be there at 12pm on a Tuesday to catch a drop. For those collectors that do often sell a casting they don’t want can make the $99 back easily. HW wouldn’t have to do this type of membership if it wasn’t for the scalpers. It all comes back to those scalpers. The $99 is well worth not having to stress about it. Plus I heard from collector sources that Mattel has been producing larger numbers of RLCs so collectors can have the chance to get what they want, and with the Overdrive they aren’t going to produce the numbers they did before. The fact that Mini GT or others that are more detailed yet cheaper, is really a moot point to collectors, bcuz they just aren’t Hot Wheels. It’s ashame that Mattel has to do this, but back in 2002 when RLC started the scalpers weren’t a factor as they’re now. They literally will take EVERY casting on the pegs to resell for a ridiculous price. I’m all for anything to go against the scalpers. If I find a STH on the pegs that I already have, I’ll buy it just to find a young HW liking kid just to give it to. I’ve even waited to see a kid look thru the HW and hand one to them so they could buy it. I’m glad and fully support the idea of the Overdrive bcuz HW is listening to the collectors complaining about the whole scalping problem. I love the fact that if you go on EBay you can’t find anyone selling an Overdrive membership for $400.

I hear a lot of talk about other brands like mini gt. I like mini gt but sometimes the quality isn't that great on them. I love my inno 64 Silvia S13 but the wheels don't spin 😂. Hot Wheels have a lot of flaws and blemishes too that upset me when I get one. But still Hot Wheels have an attraction like no other when they're done right. The point I want to make is that this is pretty much an expensive hobby. And $99 is nothing spread out to six or seven cars I may want. Plus the stress factor is gone. I've missed out on stuff in the past. With those sick cars coming up the rest of the year this upgrade is totally worth it. Good luck everybody and happy diecasting 😊

Best comment by far. Yes, this is an expensive hobby. No one likes spending more money for something they love. No one. By the market for RLC is an expensive one. The skylines are always over $100. The craftsmanship that goes into RLC is something I think goes unnoticed. For example, the 71 amc javelin AMX was spectacular but no one wanted it because it wasn’t a JDM casting or a gasser. So a lot of people feel entitled to get amazing castings for cheap when in reality those people are not true fans. They are JDM hype fans that only care about is what everyone likes which is the mainstream castings. I feel that is why RLC is afraid to do new things because of stuff like this.

Yes and no, yes they do some cars that are the same like the skyline(72 and r34), dodge charger, Volkswagen beetles, Camaros and other stuff. But they do have a lot of different colors and perhaps improved interior detailing. I think they’re doing this for newcomers so that they don’t miss out on the classic RLCS like the cars I listed. But if you don’t want the same thing every time I get that. This year seems like they’re doing a ton of new castings like the rx7 and supra which I’m super excited for.

I’m a RLC member . I get drops I like when I can . Is 99 dollars worth the chance to get every drop ? That’s beating the fun and excitement out of it . Some should think of it like this... Do you think its unfair to those who choose not to purchase a "fast pass" at 6 Flags and have to wait in line while "fast pass" members paid the same amount to enter the theme park plus the "fast pass" cost? Some people are claiming Mattel will make 10000 more of each release so that the regular subscribers are not affected. Not likely. Remember that Overdrive gives members the option to skip. Only a handful of releases sell out in less than 7 minutes. Mattel doesn’t want piles of unwanted stock.

RLC cars never impressed me for the price anyway. I reluctantly bought a membership in October last year and bought the corvette stingray redline after missing out on 2 different drops. Waited 2 months just to have my order refunded, but not my membership. I’ll pass on any of this “pay for the privilege” BS from now on.

Overdrive is worth the $100 and levels the playing field against the criminal bots that steal 100 copies of a rlc car during a online sale. It stops the thieves buying up all the copies and it prevents them from selling them on epay for 5x what they're worth. Stop complaining.

So if the limit is 2, you are guaranteed 1, get charged for shipping, then if you want another 1, you get to pay shipping again. The math is crazy.. let’s say 15 releases per year. That’s $6.7 per release with overdrive + $9 for shipping. $40-45 for a single rlc is mad. Fomo sells.

I believe even if you bought 2 on the site manually without overdrive, the shipping price increases. I guess it depends on how much they can fit in a box because the RYUS nsx was in bigger diorama like case so it needed a bigger box, buying 2 would not only make it heavy but increase the size of the box. It also depends on where you live as well. Everyone has been commenting different shipping prices. And you don’t need to buy every drop, you can just opt out of a drop before the deadline, or you can flip RLCs and try to get some money. That’s just my take though. I’ve heard people say scalpers will get this membership and prices will increase. I doubt it will benefit scalpers because they depend on the desperation of people who missed out, otherwise they would be selling it to people outside of the country which Mattel is currently looking for a solution for that. All in all, I think this system has more good than cons.

I hear what you’re saying, but if you don’t buy every drop, the ones you buy will be even more expensive.. what I can say from experience is that I’ve been grabbing from mattel for a long time now from across the pond and it’s always £9 for shipping and taxes +the fact that I buy all the items same value but in £ not $. I never do large orders tho, so not sure above 2kg boxes. Anyway my only hope is that this 10k overdrive memberships will somewhat satisfy the demand and scalpers will end up sitting on stock of overpriced moon dust.

So, those treasure hunt sets are sold in February of the new year, this overdrive membership ends on December 31st. That’s my theory. I’ve tried really hard to grab that set and failed many times. So now people who purchased the membership will need to purchase it again to get the STH set that releases in Jan-February. The way I see it, they have tried to combat bots in the past by increasing the amount made, adding captchas and rereleasing previous castings for those who missed out but in different colors. And to be honest for almost every company and business maximizing profits is the number 1 goal. Profits can bring better innovations, puts food on the plate of workers, it creates more jobs and opportunities and creates a market. I’m a diehard hot wheels fan and I believe that by getting OD it allows me to focus on my work and studies while having a guaranteed success with RLC. No more cancellations, no more staking out the website until 11 CT. I don’t have to pay scalpers for forgetting a drop that I actually wanted. I rather my money go to a corporation that has been releasing good products and has passionate workers than pay someone who bought up all the stock for pure greed.

I don’t think you can. The reason I believe that is because usually the STH set comes out in January. This overdrive membership expires on the 31st of January. My guess to why they made it this way is because they want people to continue to subscribe to this membership which really sucks because we don’t get any type of reward for loyalty for supporting. I don’t see it that way. I’ve noticed they have been trying to battle bots and limit the number of RLCS sold while also increasing the amount made. They stopped creating the batch numbers on the packaging, they added captchas(which failed) the limit is not kept to one per member(unless they use multiple members) now they are using a new method that uses a automated ordering system where members can get what they want without trying to fight for it. Is it consumer friendly? No it’s not, it’s actually the opposite. I think they should have done this for base members. But it’s still a solution to a problem. Maybe they will add more perks like free shipping or faster shipping times. All I know is everyone has been complaining about getting an RLC they want. This grants them what they want. This isn’t beneficial for scalpers either because now they have to spend more money to get product and if they have to increase the price even more no one is gonna want to buy it, especially if the batch numbers increased.

@@preludeboy99 I get that. But if you go to the RLC boards most of those complainers are newer members and they DID NOT READ THE AGREEMENT BEFORE THEY JOINED THE CLUB. It only gives you a CHANCE at cars not a guarantee. It's always been this way but Mattel saw dollar signs when foolish people used to pay 8 times the price for a current release 5 minutes after sellout. Overdrive is basically the subscription service they used to have. Which was FREE and first come first serve. Now it's $100 md 10k limit with quantities 35k and more. Again except for the McLaren/Skyline and maybe the Continental , most stuff will be EXTREMELY easy to get this year. Look at the Power Wagon and how everyone thought it was gonna be hard to get. It's collecting cobwebs on ebay 😂. The BMW's ...cobwebs. So basically people bought overdrive for two HYPED pieces. So If they want to make enough for everyone. They need to price accordingly. At this point it's a major rip off. The cars are nice but I can get the same quality from Mini Gt exclusives and they are 3000 limit.... Food for thought man... Oh and what they really needed to do was get RID OF 5 ACCOUNT HOLDERS. That is what kills the sales. Most 5 account holders are SCALPERS. Plain and simple. No one under one roof needs or wants 5 cars. I don't care if they have four sons. 😂. They have 5 accounts for resale. Bottom line. If they get rid of the 5 household accounts. I bet it would go more smoothly...

Hot wheels getting greedy bottom line!! they dgaf, also the market will be overflowed wit RLCs and they will worth nothing but retail so bad for resellers and great for PC collectors 😊 good luck trying to sell the car’s secondary market prices! Haha! 😂 this idea will crash Ina year, BoTs should be eliminated to fix this issue and 1 car per sale per club member period! 😊
