The outlining effect is called haloing because it encircles the pen stroke like a halo. Great review! Just in case, though you probably know, other ink terms are; shading, caused by dropping pigments or slant of a table, so almost all inks can be shading, sheen is caused by crystals forming as it dries, shimmer is glitter added to an ink, ghosting is thin paper showing writing on opposite side, bleeding is when thin ink or crappy paper wicks the ink to the opposite side and sometimes into the next page. Really dry paper can wick ink more than paper that was sitting in a damp atmosphere. Feathering is when paper wicks ink sideways jaggedly into the fibers, if the ink spreads out evenly, it is called spread and blooming. Coated papers are papers that have either plastic added to the surface of powders pressed into it, our loose crushed cuttle fish bone added called pouncing. Dry pens write lighter colors, wet pens write darker, and as you know, thickness of the ink changes this as well. Ironically, thicker inks give a smoother writing experience but stay smearable for a longer time. Dip pens write darker, but you can dip a fountain pen and wipe it, then write with it and get a better example of how it looks when writing. I love olive green too! ❤️

I really like the Noodler’s army green. I’ve seen it and never been drawn to it until I saw it compared to some other inks. I like the shading. I’m really grateful you did all this comparison to spare me shopping around. Sometimes I think I’m buying them more for the names their marketers target me with than for actual properties. I bought some wearingeul mad hatter and was so disappointed by how dry it is in my pen.

Rohrer & Klingner's Alt Goldgrun wrote too light for me and Monteverde Olivine was a bit flat so I mixed the two (3 parts Alt Goldgrun 1 part Olivine) and I absolutely loved the result. My favorite olive green inks are Diamine Safari...great shading and flows very well and Sailor Tokiwa Matsu...such a unique ink and the shading and sheen are amazing.
@MummyBrown2 жыл бұрын
My faves are the Noodler's and the Rohrer and Klingner Alt-Goldgrun Ink. I prefer the browner toned olive greens. No matter how dark those end up, those always have some detectable green in them. The darker shades end up looking black to me.

This is by far the BEST video of its type I’ve seen. And believe me I watch a ton of pen and ink videos. Your observations are descriptive without being repetitive. I never understood the term “wet” ink (all ink is wet! ) until you illustrated it with such clarity. I love the experience of writing with fountain pens and I’m just starting to recognize how important the ink is to the feeling of the nib on the paper. I could go on and on about the tactile experience of writing! As I write this tons of questions are bubbling up…. I wish we could meet for coffee!

Great video! I actually am looking for green inks since I have only tried a few so far. My current favourite is Diamine Evergreen which is a dark green with cool undertones, a lot of shading and a dark coppery sheen very similar to the Sailor Shikiori Tokiwa-Matsu. It's such a dynamic ink! I am also a fan of unsaturated colours so Platinum Forest Black and Sailor Studio 370 were my favs from this video. Also, I think the ink effect you noticed is called a halo.

I have sailor 370 and Rohrer & Klingner Alt Goldrun, the latter which i absolutely love in my stub nibs. My other favourite green is Robert Oster Moss. I have gone through three samples of it an finally bought the bottle. Looks a little similar to the monteverde.

I too use the Alt Goldgrun in my one and only stub nib. It shows off some shading in this intriguing ink. If you dab the nib tip inyo a paper towel, you can see the separate gold (yellowish) and grun (green) come out.

3:28 The term for that is "halo". 12:22 That has been my experience with the few Monteverde inks that I have tried. They create thicker lines and try to seep through the page. They don't like cheaper papers. They're not bad inks but I prefer to reach for other options. Thanks for doing this comparison. I came to watch this video because I need a green/brown ink to represent March in my planner. Noodler's Army is visually the best option from this selection but I don't like how Noodler's inks have the tendency towards never fully drying (I'm a lefty). Have you since come across an ink that looks similar? Diamine's Safari seems to be my best bet. I'm waiting for it to go on sale and am continuing to look into other options until then.

I spent several years and many dollars trying to find "my" green, including many of those featured here. I knew what I was looking for was somewhere on the olive/brown border, but I wasn't really satisfied until I found the Kobe greens, which are amazing, and then eventually settled on Diamine Classic Green as an affordable daily writer. Honorable mentions though to R&K AltGoldgrun, which I love for painting, and Diamine Safari. I do find, as this review shows, that a range of greens on a page gives a more pleasing effect than just one, and provides a great field for bolder accent colors to show off in, so I don't mind having several greens inked at any one time.

@@JournalSunshine I have Kobe no's 28, 45 and 49 and all of them are awesome! No's 1 and 35 look interesting too, although 35 and 28 are apparently an either/or. There's also a Biotope Green, which looks a bit like Diamine Wagner? They are expensive as imported inks but they have flawless properties and such a depth of color that other inks look flat in comparison. I also have "my" brown (#40) and a couple of glorious pinks (#s 12 and 54) from the Kobe range, and am looking to pick up their Violet-Grey (#10), but it's the Greens that were a breakthrough for me.
