Prices are getting high for a lot of people on low incomes. I got a Switch three weeks ago with 5 Pokemon games. Three of those games haven't been on sale in brand new condition by a retailer for years. Two of them are current, Scarlet and Violet. I got them all at a retro store which gives a 24 month warranty if there's a fault with the game. While I don't personally have an issue with $50+ games, if you wait a week or two you can find used copies of that new game for $20s or more off.

I'd imagine Nintendo already have bought the MiG switch cart so they can figure out ways to make it detectable when it's in a Switch and when a ROM is running off it. They aren't going to sleep on that. Nintendo is like a rabid dog when it comes to IP and copyright detection. Wouldn't be surprised if they update the Switch in the near future with a MiG detection feature that leads to the MiG user getting an auto ban.

It's a nice idea but the issue is Nintendo CAN'T tell which one is the copy and which is the original so the only options would be to allow all or block all. But for people who keep their consoles offline it won't matter anyway. Detecting this card should be possible as it should pull more power than an original card as it's running more hardware but this may need a major firmware or hardware revision, and after 7 years will they bother?

That's happening too it seems, but really what people are doing with this tech is copying the original cartridge and using a digital version of it. @@MoreCrossingMinute Probably not - you can only redeem gold coins from a physical cart within 1 year of the game's original release date on the eShop. So, if someone had a sealed copy that was only opened after that date, then they can't register the cart and can't redeem any coins. Each cart also can only be redeemed once ever, so if person A registers to redeem the coins, then gives their cart to person B, person B cannot register the cart to redeem coins.

If someone buys that game and gets banned, they can reach out to GameStop and idk, maybe contact the seller, or ban the seller, or contact Nintendo or do something to try to resolve the situation. If we're being real here the people who are hacking their switches aren't the type to go swooping into a gamestop to buy 2nd hand games or buying brand new games to clone then resell the cartridge. Not only are they unlikely to buy games in the first place the trade in value for games have been a scam for decades so buying a new/used game for $20-$60 then trading it back in for 3 dollars is going to be a rare occurrence at best.

I’ve stopped buying used games immediately when the dumper started shipping commercially. I can’t take that chance of my account or my switch getting banned. @Skyv3rz
@Skyv3rz 7 ай бұрын
I have serious doubts that this will ever become an issue. If Nintendo starts banning people with unmodded consoles and legitimate games that were bought used, they will just a) create an even bigger incentive for people to actually pirate their games and b) be liable for a lawsuit in various countries that have strong consumer protection laws. Also, it's kinda dumb to purchase a bunch of cartridges just to dump them, because if you're not going to keep the cartridge then your dumped file is still technically illegal and you might as well be downloading pirated copies off the internet, and if you want your unique certificate so you can go online with the dump you don't want other people using the same cartridge that you did. The MIG dumper is only ever practical for people who actually have a large physical collection and want to take their games on the go without carrying multiple cartridges.

Game stores need to reject any Switch game that's already been dumped to be used on a Mig Switch flashcart. There needs to be a corporate policy where they have to ask if they've dumped the Switch game for use with a MIG Switch, and if so (or if they refuse to answer), then the return is automatically rejected. They should also have a sign up that tells buyers if they get banned for playing a used Switch game online, that they contact the store, and whoever returned the copy under false pretenses gets banned from that game store for life.

Some games are playable even without patches offline though expect a few glitches like the old days. It's just knowing which ones. I have played games straight out of the box at times without updating. I just don't connect to the internet thus doesn't trigger the you need to update message if the game doesn't actually require it. Sorry to hear you have no games though. When the switch 2 comes out keep a close eye for bargain sales on switch games over the years following. I remember getting some really cheap 3ds games a few years after switch release. Yo-kai watch brand new for $5 was amazing and a few nintendo games got cheap also though more in the $20 range. As for the hacker situation. Try not to worry too much. I have a feeling this won't be as big a issue as people say. If the hacker wants to make a copy and sell physical and plans to go online with it then they are screwing themselves over because they'll also be banned. Chances are their copy will likely never see Nintendo's online. Yes there's a risk with a stupid hacker but having the physical copy and receipt should hopefully be enough proof.

If by 'taking it back' you mean the game back to the retailer for refund after they've dumped it, then I'm not sure there is a problem. I don't know a retailer that takes video games back for refund, particularly if they've been opened. If unopened, they've exchanged or refunded, but that's it, and usually within a 10 or 15 day time limit from the time of purchase WITH a receipt. Target once offered an exchange only on a duplicate game my son received as a gift (no receipt), but for a fee, even though they could confirm within their system that the game was purchased legitimately AND that it was within 7 days of doin so. So even on exchange they were only willing to return 75% of the games purchase value. (We no longer do business with Target, lol). Having said all that, a person bent on committing a crime usually finds a way and an accomplice if they need one. It would only take one corrupt retail worker to make the return for the scenario to mentioned to play out. It's quite possible this new dumper will cause problems for Nintendo and consumers in the future. Thanks for reporting,. Hope you have a great week.

I'm just now very concerned about the unintended consequences and what is going to happen to legitimate owners as a result of this situation. Never have I ever recalled a situation like this happening while in the middle/near the end of a game system's life cycle.

It's just if you're connected to Nintendo's servers and are on the game. Even if you're not connected, the switch will log what you did, and at what time, so no matter whay, once you connect to the Internet, that will be sent to nintendo. Nintendo likes to send bans out in waves, so you may have a limited time, but if you were onine at the same time, you're screwed.

I’ve loved Nintendo products for years, but their stance to combat piracy lately has really started to rub me the wrong way to the point I’m considering entirely skipping their next console generation. As a loyal customer I’ve spent thousands purchasing their games from retailers at full MSRP and now have to worry about them banning my account should I be an unfortunate victim of piracy when buying used games? Absolutely ridiculous and such an anti consumer move. The success of the switch has furthered their greed to a disgusting level they think they are unstoppable. This will eventually backfire like it did during the Wii U / 3DS era where they get humbled and have to slowly earn the loyalty of their customers back. Seems like a vicious cycle we see each console generation where one of the big three companies surpasses the leading competitor because they get too comfortable and focused on fiscal earnings rather than providing products the consumers want and are willing to pay for.

Here's how Nintendo COULD handle it... Multiple users online with same certificate = certificate banned Someone complains that used cartridge purchased stopped working, Nintendo has customer physically mail cartridge to Nintendo. Nintendo verifies cartridge is not a counterfeit replica and that certificate matches banned certificate. Nintendo either mails a replacement cartridge or issues a coupon for that game for free and reimburses the retailer or offers a digital copy of the game.

Class action lawsuit against Nintendo. If you have your original receipt and a copy of the credit card statement that shows proof you bought the game, Nintendo should not ban you. Doesn't matter what they think. This should go to court and I would love it if Nintendo lost in a big way.

What if Nintendo had a system where physical games were registered to your console the first time they were played? From then on, that cartridge would only work on your Switch unless you deregistered it. That would discourage piracy, theft and sharing games within a household. There could even be a limit to how many times a game can change ownership before it becomes useless, so you can still sell it second hand but won't be able to lend it to friends or play it on different Switches in a house.

If Nintendo bans people, then the people dumping the games could also be banned, which might hinder those who would want to dump games and sell them…the perpetrator also couldn’t play the games online potentially.

Nintendo needs to 100% remove file transfers from usb C completely. allow for charging but not info transfer.... remove sd card slots and make the new future console digital only. all file transfers be done with service online. and no more physical copies.... people really know how to ruin something good because they lazy.

@@waltsoph3 current is a bit of a stretch. Switch 2 is in production at this point. With that situation fueling the fire, i doubt Switch will get many games after release of the successor. Nintendo being themselves and not implementing enough protection is what allowed this mess in the first place. I wonder what they do prevent this in the future. Looks like we all going to all digital future, like it or not.
