Would you suggest this to a good first bike? I've had my fair share of dirt bike track like stuff and regular road riding. Take my time in learning something thoroughly. Dad always rode harleys and so does my brother. Would have those two as mentors if I have any questions.
@dacritter83973 жыл бұрын
@@naterskater7709 It's a great first bike.. but remember this -- you don't actually need a 'first bike' or 'beginner bike' and then switch to something else. A Road King is really just as easy to ride and master as a Sportster. Turn radius is a bit different for slow speed drills, but it really isn't a big deal. Choose a bike in your price range that you really truly like. Test ride, etc... The BEST bike for you is the one you love to ride.
@naterskater77093 жыл бұрын
@@dacritter8397 thank you for that! I've never thought about it that way. I've been limiting my search to 900cc and up. I need a bike that can handle highway for about 30 minutes. But I'll be sure to put that advice into my future searching.
@aamantium13 жыл бұрын
@@naterskater7709 nice thing about sportys is, they are respectively more affordable to customize, so if you find yourself too low to the ground, it's not too expensive to change. If the seat makes your ass numb after 30 minutes, it's not too expensive to change. If you don't enjoy the wind in your face, well, maybe consider a sports car?

There is too much "brand bashing"! What does it matter as long as your getting wind? If you are a small framed person sportster or don't have a ton of money, sportsters can be wonderful! If your sportster doesn't have enough top end, CHANGE YOUR GEAR RATIOS! Yes, the older ironhead needed a 5th gear, but I currently own 4 ironheads. You cannot have BOTH torque and speed, 1 must sacrifice for the other. My bikes are built for how I feel like riding that day. I have a sporty that I can highway ride at over 100mph ALL DAY. My bikes are all very dependable, fun, and didn't cost me $10,000! I can add up the purchase price, the mods I want to make it the way I want it, and all the accessories I want for well under what the purchase price for a big twin or rocket! It boils down to each individual.PLEASE GUYS, GETTING SOME WIND IS GETTING SOME WIND. There are too many "cages" trying to take us out to worry about ANYTHING else! Ride what YOU like, as long as we are getting out and getting wind. THAT is LIVE TO RIDE, RIDE TO LIVE! Look out for each other guys, life is WAY TOO SHORT to do anything BUT! Stay safe, ride free!

My 96 Sporty 1200 does 0-60 in 4 seconds. Same as the 96 Porsche 911 and a lot less expensive. It ran like crap until I did multiple oil changes every 50 miles with Seafoam added to the oil, and new plugs and air filter. A little basic maintenance worked wonders. Also added a little Lucas to the fuel. Full throttle in 1st up to 40 mph and then full throttle in 2nd and you are over 60 mph in a few short seconds. So much torque I had to shim up the bars with a little piece of copper sheet metal. It was pretty terrifying when I first romped on it and the bars got pulled back. It has Screaming Eagle exhaust and ignition and that probably helps too. It's a ton of fun and looks and sounds great too.

Only drawback obviously is comfort, after an hour you are feeling it....whereas a RoadKing you can put in an 8 hour shift like your living room couch.....you also give up about 300lbs on the bigger bikes, so you can get blown around on the highway by the rigs.

All these people talking about Sportsters only being good for short trips. What’s with that? I live in Australia and I don’t see the problem with long rides on a Sporty. I’m 63 years old and ridden Triumph Bonnevilles and Tigers most of my life. I’ve got a ‘97 883 with a 2-1 exhaust system and slightly taller gearing and I’ve ridden her to Queensland and back to Victoria (a round trip of about 2,100 miles) several times in the ten years I’had her. I’ve never had any issues with reliability, either. I have stock pegs and highway pegs, so I can vary my riding position quite a bit and I do the trip up North in three days or so, which isn’t bad. What I love about the Sporty is that it likes to rev and the 883 is better balanced as far as piston weight is concerned, so it will rev higher than the factory 1200s. With the final drive belt sprocket two teeth more than the stock unit, the revs drop by about 300-350 at highway speeds, but if I want to throw it around some twisting mountain roads, the engine is tractable enough that I can leave it in third gear and just throttle on and off again, using the brakes hardly at all. One of the best bikes I’ve ever owned. Looks good, sounds good and does everything I want it to. Been thinking about a 1250 kit which has lightweight pistons, which I’ll import from the US because parts are staggeringly expensive here, compared to the USA. The last time I looked, a brand new 1200 Sporty cost about $20k here, so that gives you some idea of how lucky you are in the States. Love the videos and the Bible verses Bro!

The sportster whether people want to acknowledge it or not, is the heart and soul of Harley Davidson. It’s the purest Harley and one of my favorite. I have a 2002 1200 custom and I prefer it to my 2000 fxst.

I'm 56 and got bit by the bug late last summer , for some unknown reason. My aunts boyfriend has a '07 with under 5000 miles on it for $4000 . Going to check it out this weekend. He is a vintage car collector so I assume the bike is in good shape. I don't like the color but I have a few ideas to fix that. A decent first bike at a reasonable price. I'm looking forward to this !!

Sportsters are great for the type of road you are riding on and some city traffic. You can do a long trip like 400 miles. Get a ground floor motel room. Pull the bike inside for the night. Do the S.S.S. thing in the morning and off you go.

Have a 1990 XLH 883 with a 1200 kit. Absolutely love it. First street bike I've ever bought. Rode a couple sport bikes and the ergonomics were hard on my shoulder and back. Could use a new seat on my Sporty but damn is it a blast to ride. Want to do some different things with it. Different bars, exhaust, wheels, repaint it, polish it up, etc. I also get a lot of comments on it the way it is.

I learned to ride at a German driving school with a nervous little sport bike. Uncomfortable for long and with a sensitive clutch and throttle. I much prefer the relaxed response of my carb’d Sportster. It’s plenty quick but far more comfortable

My first bike was a Sportster 1200. Love the bike, but I am a tall gal (6'0" with long legs). It's fine for me as a passenger, but not comfortable to ride for those of us who have long legs. But, that was a rookie mistake that can be avoided, by learning to ride before you buy.

My brother-in-law went from Napa, CA for Sturgis on a HD 883 riding it, not trailering it!! So, those Sportsters can go distances. It all depends on how coddled one has been in life. Those who complain about the Sportster being uncomfortable for long rides are momma's boys and girls.... Riders need to quit complaining and ride. Good thing Asher, you have no complaints. You were raised right... BTW, I have owned 10 Sportsters, they are great bikes and NO OTHER motorcycle motor has 4 gear driven cams!!!! 883 = 3 inch diameter pistons. 1200 = 3.5 inch diameter pistons. That is the only real difference in the two models.

@AmericanWay725 жыл бұрын
Riders aint what they use to be.
@kiknazz20205 жыл бұрын
@Mod Zozer No. The transmissions are the same. The difference is on the 883, the rear sprocket has 2 more teeth which makes the engine have to do everything a little sooner.
@kiknazz20205 жыл бұрын
@Mod Zozer research tells me both are true. But it doesn't really matter because at the end of the day it's still just a boring, wide ratio 5 speed. I have a 99 883 sportster and trust me, there's nothing "close ratio" about that transmission. The close ratio 6 speed in the 2012 on up big twins is a hell of a lot more fun.

Us old guys used to call those bars the Spread Z Bar. The bar spreads out a bit from the base mounting bar. I had the 10' rise with a 30 degree pivot towards the rider from the uprights. Those were super comfortable and great handling They looked good too. Take those damn bags off a Sportster. That's just insane.

@@Flubolaplays A little bit yes. You can get forward controls and that will make it much more comfortable. Also add a certain seat that puts you back few inches from the tank backwards and bam - a perfect mod for your height. Also look into Roadster, higher suspension will be more comfortable when stopped, plus dual discs! I've got Iron 1200 2018 and pretty happy. 6"1 185lbs. Plenty of power, especially after Stage 1.
