Well... I'm Mexican. So... I can say this much about Mexican men: as an attractive black woman... you are an uncommon beauty. It's not just the skin color. It's your features. Your hair. Your eyes. You are considered more attractive than blonde-blue-eyed Americans. You will get stares. ANd will continue to get a lot of attention. Racism due to skin color is not something Mexicans have. Black Americans will not be discriminated against because of skin color in Mexico City. Think of how a blonde, blue-eyed American girl will get noticed in Asia. Like... in Tokyo or Beijing. She will get noticed because those girls are not as common there. With you... it's the same. You are a rarity in Mexico. Don't take it the wrong way. It may feel like too much. But take it as a compliment.

I don't think you have been keeping up with the news about tourism in Europe. Some cities are fed up with tourists and the over tourism of their cities and want them to go home. They are fed up with the gentrification of their neighborhoods, the high cost of living that comes along with massive tourism, their bad behavior and lack of respect for their culture and cultural heritage sites.

@@johnsimon4263 Gentrification is more complex than you realize. You can't just narrow it down to "cleaning up" an area. In one way, you are cleaning out an area of people that have lived there for decades.For people living through it, it means having a roof over your head one day and then being out in the street the next. You are dealing with people's lives, not a piece of trash that you dispose of.

People staring is mostly because they're not that used to seeing someone of your skin color and this also happens to white people as well, so it's just because you do look like a foreigner to them but they're just curious. If they had the courage most of them would walk up to you and talk to you to get to know a little bit about yourself and make sure you are enjoying your time there.

There is a lot of heterosexuality in Mexico City. In the US heterosexual men have been harassed and threatened at work to the extent they dont look at women. So heterosexual behavior can be shocking for people not used to it

Is not heterosexual darling. You can feel things and not act on them until you know the other person will enthusiastically enjoy it. Is consent.

I don't even drink water from the tab here in the USA. Growing up in Mexico city, this is what we learn from other men, we think it's ok and if we don't do it, we are not men enough (it's a pressure from society too), we think it's cool and we think this will impress the ladies but it's the opposite. When i visit my moms hometown in a rural area i get stared down so bad because i dress and act different from the folks there. It took me a while to get used to and feel comfortable with the people there because of it. I also have started wearing my hair in its natural very curly state in a short blonde style and now when i go to Baja, i get stared at so intensely sometimes, it makes me feel like im in a zoo exhibit. Ok home price in an area pre gentrification is X. Then activity starts. New owners buy property to repair in almost all cases Mexican buy property from sellers in almost all cases Mexican and rejuvenate property. The new renter lets say US immigrant pays more for reworked property. Usually the US renter is unaware of what price they should pay but compared with where they come from it seems great. The legacy renter usually Mexican gets priced out. But remember the property is different than what was previously rented its better been improved and the price reflects it. Why are you sad for the Mexican renter who got priced out of the zone they lived in? But the US immigrant came from the States effectively got priced out and moved to Mexico for lower price. The US renter was gentrified outnof the states. Why no tears for them? The best news in all this is that in Mexico City at least you can stay away from other US natives pretty easily and enjoy Mexican culture.

I have visited so many times growing up to visit family and friends but this was the first time I ever felt like i needed to set that town on fire. Like we are from Chicago, the south side of Chicago, and yea its like that sometimes where your girls gets the slight stare here and there but we have never had all types of people just dead eye stare like a town of serial killers. Even little kids where like the Mexican Children of the Corn Tortillas! Point blank, Mexicans do not experience black people that much and they are a curious rude. My wife and I still had the best time and she still felt very at home in my little town and was treated like part of the family in like a millisecond. If you don't feel ok here, then you shouldn't move here. Consider this, if the water, the air, the excess of appreciation, the crime, the cost of living or whatever bothers you and is important to you then don;t come here. Moving to Mexico City or any city in Mexico is an important decision, that should be deeply considered. As probably you may noticed Mexico can be wonderful but also awful at the same time, and as many things in life, Mexico is not for everybody. ADAPTATION is key for this, millions of people moves to USA not because they consider your country wonderful but because of socio-economic or geo-political reasons; (though USA certainly has good things and advantages too), and those people need to adapt and suffer not only the problems you mentioned but far many more. And if they complain and are not willing or be able to adapt themselves to your culture, your food, the racism, the crime, the drugs, the cost of living or what ever the problem, then USA is not for them and the country does need them too. For others is quite the contrary. In Mexico as you may have noticed, there are a tons of people from other parts of the world that were able to suffer the problems you mentioned and still adapt themselves and find the country a good option. If not take a look at the 1.5 millions of persons from USA that lives permanently here since many years. the same happens with a bunch of guys from Europe, The Caribbean, Central and Southamerica that now Mexico is their new home. So ADAPTATION is the key word. Many Mexicans tries to offer the best of the country to foreigners, but also know about the problems that exist and do not expect that by hidden them those will dissapear, quite the opposite, we are trying to fix them, and we think that even with that, you still found many things so attractive that are willing to come again. In other words ====>>>> "Mi casa es tu casa" but "Mi casa" still with all the problem it has, we offer it to all the ones that can adapt to it.

14:51 I’ve seen groups in social media dedicated to hating on foreigners; purposely giving them wrong directions, telling them they won’t talk unless they speak spanish, like you mention guiding them to dangerous areas, hanging posters with threats about one day kicking them out. And just wishing ill on them. I’ve seen them growing recently. As someone who likes to travel it’s scary to think locals have a growing resentment towards you but as someone who was born and raised in Mexico I’ve seen and lived the unfairness of being displaced by foreigners, specifically Americans. The government should put a foreigner tax tbh and diversify land use so that central areas can be inhabited by people of different types of incomes, unfortunately there’re so many obstacles to achieve that, mainly the building sector being very corrupt and powerful in the city. Until anything changes, the resentment from the locals will continue to grow. And to avoid that you can look for locals who give tours (checking opinions ofc) that are outside of touristy areas, I think people will treat you nicer if they don’t see you as the typical tourist. Also get an idea of how much things cost outside of touristy areas and buy within that range, even if you can afford to spend more, even if you have to walk around a bit. Help your economy and ours.

Puts more eyes on you guys to where they come out as weirdos and creepers. But is definitely a cultural thing that women keep fighting in Mexico. In rural areas it can even be worse.

I get the stares also, it's just that difference many haven't seen, and the stereotype that goes with it. I get it a lot on cdmx. But its about getting used to it, cdmx is so huge. Just know, cdmx is expensive, but so much varieties of food there, if you see one taco stand empty and the other full, go to the full one, my stomach learned the hard way. I live in playa del Carmen now, less traffic, beach life.

Great information and details about living in CDMX. After living in CDMX & visiting Ethiopia, is there any culture shock when you come back to America?
@Tolu.Travels
@Tolu.Travels 29 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! I think the biggest thing is the diversity. I took for granted how diverse the US is and how special it is to be surrounded by people from all walks of life there. Another thing I noticed after living in CDMX is the visual aspect of many cities in America. CDMX is so green, colorful and lively in general whereas, if you want to experience this in the US you have to drive somewhere specific

Cat calls is very Latin American. Specially when you are atractiva. You need to learn to deal with it. It is really cultural. You need to learn to ignore it. The culture is not going to change. Our women of color are amazing beautiful. We are of many different shades of color. Because of there is a hynottic admiration of men. Not just Mexican men you probably have noticed this with other men it may be just be a look. I still get this also from men. I have men that virtually stalking me. I don’t give any personal information on KZbin. I am extremely careful when I go out. I am very cognizant of my safety. Women must be cognizant of their safety always. Women of color yes men look at us as a fetish especially if they are of a different ethnicity. This happens to all of us it has happened all my life. Just be careful and whenever you go out be cognizant of where you are. Perhaps you should move to Merida in my research it says it is the third safest country in North America; Canada is second, take care and God bless. I will pray for you, men don’t realize how this affects us.

I’m from Mexico City and as a woman I understand your frustration to this situation. It’s annoying and disrespectful! It’s quite common that men harass women that they find attractive in the street or public transportation. I guess is part of the machismo. I’m sorry, wish was different. Also the earthquakes is a con. And yes, Mexico City citizens can be cruel too.

The staring sounds creppy and disrespectful. I would walk with friends, especially male friends, whenever possible. There's a lot of "macho" culture in Latin America and not respecting women very much. Seeing them as pieces of meat. Be careful! And I recommend a place like Spain next. I know someone from there and she loves the easy life/more slow life. Here in the US, it's work and just work.

Hi Tolu (I'm taking Naijia liberties by addressing you as if I know you, even though I don't.😉) First, I do not say this as an excuse or justification for the behaviors & cat-calling interactions you've experienced. There's no excuse for it. You are VERY beautiful - absolutely gorgeous, more so than you likely know. You also have a glow and a vibrance. It is all your God given portion. Be you. Wear what you want. Don't modify your appearance in an effort to temper the behavior of others. Next, my solo experience in Italy (Torino and especially in Milan) was much like what you've described in CDMX. It was nuts! A previous commentor (@eristotle2380) mentioned she had no problems when walking with her young adult son. I think there's something to that. I was in Mexico City last summer 2023. When walking, my teenage son was always with me, and I didn't experience any of the cat-calling behavior I experienced in Italy. Be you.🤎

I've been to Merida, Mexico and I found that the staring was more curiosity or flattery than anything to be offended by. I think the locals there practice a bit more restraint than in Mexico City. But one time at the zoo some random women took a photo of my adorable 5 year old son together with their daughter and he refused to smile. He hated the attention, and being treated like an exotic animal. I learned from this experience that what is flattering for one person might be insulting for another. I should have politely said no.
