@@the_expat here is the deal from me boots on the ground in CR. Drugs and Gangs related to drugs are clearly on the rise. Obviously the money to be made is in tourist areas and bigger cities. That does not mean allot of outskirts houses and neighborhoods are not targeted to be robbed with violence involved. This is the biggest problem with that. The gangs know the police have little presence and no ability to stop this at this time. The laid back Pura Vida is in every facet of government and though I think the current President is trying it is a deep rooted uphill battle fighting fraud and waist. The people of the country now see gringos as bags of money and easily fooled out of this money, which is actually the case especially for the new people. I am still living here. I travel to Peru once a year. Their currency exchange is 3.7 to 1 US dollar. To live in the safe, affluent areas will cost you from $400 for a small 1-bedroom apartment to $1500 for a large 3 bedroom. You will be close to everything, but if you just travel 5 miles in any direction, things will get sketchy. The countryside is close by and beautiful. Food is so good that there are culinary tours for the tourists to sample. I hope this helps.

I moved to Costa Rica from San Francisco 5 years ago. In this time the country has become a Narco State and is now the largest exporter of cocaine in the world. Drug trafficking is now the largest employer in Costa Rica with corruption and corresponding crime. I started a trucking company when I first arrived and can testify that Corruption is high with 80% of Costa Ricans saying that corruption is a major problem. (Every President here since 1990 has been charged with corruption or jailed). I’m retired and live on $5,000 a month and we live pay check to paycheck. We live in a nice gated neighborhood in the Metro area of San Jose in a comfortable 3 bedroom town house at $1,700 a month. But, Costa Rica is the 2nd most expensive Latin American country (Uruguay is first)and it has a cost of living 45% more expensive than Mexico. So, with a Dollar depreciation of 23% to the Costa Rican Colone ,from when I first arrived, everything is more expensive. My wife is local and has two teenagers who we have had to place in private school do to the poor local schools. Murder rate was 17.5 in 2023 and is set to be worse this year. Crime is increasing do to the growing increase in drug abuse and gangs; This is sadly increasing throughout the country. We have private insurance do to the poor public healthcare system. You can wait up to a year for an operation or appointment. Doctor quality is good but private especially if you have a reoccurring condition or illness is best. The average Costa Rican is friendly but so are Latin Americans in general. Costa Rica is a nice country depending what you are looking for but there are better choices in Latin America if you are retiring or your income level is moderate.

As a Costa Rican living and working in the United States, I can share the following about Costa Rica in terms of pricing and a couple of observations: Food: There’s a variety, but prices are similar to the U.S. Eating out costs about the same, but you don’t need to tip. Supermarkets are comparable unless you're looking for imported products. Fruits and vegetables are generally well-priced and fresh, something that isn’t always the case in the U.S. Housing: If you don’t plan on living in a touristy or exclusive area, you’ll pay about half of what you would in the U.S. This is the biggest savings in Costa Rica. Goods and Services: These tend to be more expensive. Electronics have gotten better in price, but overall, you'll pay 20-40% more in Costa Rica. The solution? Visit the U.S. from time to time and shop there. Infrastructure: There’s no comparison. The roads in Costa Rica are terrible, and the way directions are given is literally from the 19th century-I'm not kidding. Some people talk about bureaucracy, but in my humble opinion, it’s because they haven't dealt with it in their own country. Honestly, the bureaucracy in the U.S. is exhausting. I'm here legally and even part of a professional exchange program, and the amount of paperwork required, even while in the country, is overwhelming. What I love most about Costa Rica is that if you manage to build connections with the local community-not in those closed-off communities filled with other Americans, where the most exotic person you might meet is Italian-but in a community of "Ticos" (the term for Costa Ricans), you’ll find a truly authentic experience. Ticos, in general, are kind, friendly, cheerful, and helpful. Yes, you’ll need to try learning some Spanish, but even just saying "buenos días" to someone in your community will make a huge difference. The U.S. has obvious advantages: infinitely better infrastructure, nearly unlimited shopping options (Amazon was a game-changer for me), and most people are... polite. However, I wouldn’t call them friendly. There's always a certain indifference in every interaction, which, honestly, can be quite noticeable for someone coming from a Latin American country. I'm not talking about racism (I’ve never experienced even the slightest hint of it here) but rather a generalized indifference. Everyone is focused on their own thing and nothing more. In my opinion, the atmosphere in Costa Rica is much warmer, and people are much more open and joyful. For now, I’m staying where I am, but honestly, as soon as my contract here is up, I plan to return to Costa Rica.

Chile has far modern online services and the fastest internet i've seen, One thing to consider when having to do "presential legal paperwork" then you face the "corrupt intermediaries" to sort it out. That is truth for most of the countries you mention. Regardless the "expensiveness" of the country, some permits and documents are quickly generated online whereas in some other of these countries is a real pain to get them done. When you're young being an expat can be a great adventure and I'd absolutely recommend it. Once you hit about 60, not so much. Anything can happen at anytime to derail your retirement plans in a foreign country. I just turned 64 and live in Florida. I'm in good health for the most part and was entertaining the idea of a retirement abroad. Then one fateful day I tore the meniscus in my knee. It took months to heal and now I'm still left with compromised walking because my orthopedist said I now have severe arthritis in both knees. It all happened so fast - from active and mobile to limping around in pain, facing a possible knee replacement. I can't even imagine having to deal with all this in a foreign country. It's difficult enough here. So yeah, bear that in mind and if you are already an expat have an exit strategy in mind in case you need to return to the US.
@chrisdamas8362Ай бұрын
Very wise words. People think their good health is a given, and their adopted country will stay the same. Not so. I am 67 but went from swashbuckling around the world to having cancer and heart problems in the space of two years. @@jonathanquesada5275expat is short for “expatriate”. This word means “a person who lives outside their native country.” This is similar to “immigrant”, BUT an expat usually plans to someday return to their native country, and an immigrant moves to a new country permanently and does not plan to return home. A “migrant” is a person who moves from place to place to find a place to work and live. So the Americans ARE using the correct word for themselves living long-term away from their home country (but plan to return some day in the future). The government is certainly mindful and curious about US visitors, predominantly because of leery feelings given our country’s history of exploitation of central and South America ( including the fight to get Dole foods out of Nicaragua. The thing with authoritarian governments is they don’t tolerate criminals in the community, only within the government 😅, so violence wise you have to be doing something that would be considered overwhelmingly risky even in the US to be at risk in the community.
